Walking in My Joy Audiobook Summary

A new offering from the author of the hugely successful Mother of Black Hollywood.

Walking in My Joy is a collection of electric stories by the one and only, super hilarious Jenifer Lewis. Her commentary on what’s happening in the world today, told through her outrageous real-life adventures, will have you laughing out loud, while her insightful messages touch your soul.

A self-described “traveling fool and nature freak,” Jenifer takes readers with her all over the world, from Cape Town to Bali; Washington, DC, to the Serengeti; Mongolia to St. Petersburg; and Argentina to Antarctica to demonstrate how she walks in her joy by seeking pleasure in everyday encounters. Every step of the way you’ll be doubled over with laughter as she faints at the Obamas’ holiday party; awakens to a swollen face and has to go to the hospital during the height of the Covid pandemic; an alien visitation; a successful takedown of a conman; as well as meeting a handsome Maasai warrior and being chased by a Cape buffalo.

An actress, activist, and mental health advocate, Jenifer Lewis imparts ways to love yourself that will allow you to deflect negative energy and keep people who may come to take your joy in check. She stresses the importance of fully living to your greatest ambitions and taking the time to admire the world’s natural gifts. She also encourages embracing each other’s uniqueness as a way of finding societal healing. Walking in My Joy is a riveting and enthralling journey.

I really didn't know much about Jenifer Lewis but she is one badass, older Black woman. Both an actress and activist, she does not hold back talking about her pain seeing Trump be elected President and her experiences during the pandemic. I was especially inspired by how much she cares about social causes like global warming, Black lives matter and the Flint water crisis. Excellent on audio, she has a particularly unique and one of a kind voice and the audiobook includes excerpts from some of her virial instagram songs/sketches. HIGHLY, highly recommended as an audiobook and especially for fans of books like Jane Fonda's What can I do? As soon as I finished I wanted to go read her first book in which she talks more about her mental health struggles and being diagnosed with bipolar disorder (something she only touches on a little in this book).

Lewis, the outspoken, hilariously profane, and wildly entertaining actress and activist, follows up her no-holds-barred memoir MOTHER OF BLACK HOLLYWOOD with a new and equally entertaining collection of autobiographical essays, WALKING IN MY JOY. One chapter movingly pays tribute to growing up with her favorite cousin Ronnie (“part cousin, part sibling, part soulmate,” she clarifies). “Ronnie [who was gay] was the beginning, and since then it has been me and a hundred million gay boys running around any town I set foot in,” she writes. After Ronnie’s death in the 1990s, Lewis’s grief almost swallowed her, she writes, until she came to realize that “my pain was merely the receipt, the proof that I had loved.” A decade later, Lewis met a young, eager fan named DJ, to whom she felt an instant connection. (“He had been sent to me. Maybe by Ronnie,” she writes.”) DJ would fast become Lewis’s assistant and move into her basement (and, soon after, win a spot on RuPaul’s Drag Race, competing as his drag persona, Shangela). Lewis’s WALKING IN MY JOY is also forthright about her activism (climate change, pro-LGBTQ+ and Black Lives Matter, anti-Trump), written with conviction and power. Lewis’s tales are heartfelt, impassioned, and uplifting, but with a pleasing undercurrent of irreverence. The latest memoir by fierce and fabulous Lewis easily switches between moving confessionals and fiery calls to eradicate oppression.

Jenifer Lewis is a mighty force in these Hollywood and Broadway Streets! 68 movies, 40 animations, 4 Broadway productions. Please believe me 👏🏾She's literally the Mother of Black Hollywood as she's played the mama in shows and movies from Fresh Prince of Bellaire to What's Love Got to Do with It to my most recent favorite, Black-ish. She and her "Black Jesus" quip have me dying laughing. I didn't know anyone else, besides my mom, who could match Samuel L Jackson and his record breaking favorite word(s) "mutha fkcas". (I intentionally spelled it wrong)I always wondered why she played the mother role, but I know that they wanted her, Jenifer. It was her spunk, "her don't play with me" demeanor that commands respect, while also being endearing that they wanted. She was that mama, she was that woman. I loved her narrating her story of Walking in My Joy in These Streets. It was so entertaining and it gave me insight to her thoughts on current events, her life experiences, travel, mental health disorder, and how the people she's met around the world inspired her to serve and make a difference in the world. Her story was both captivating and hilarious, as well. I particularly cackled when she shared her story of visiting the white house meeting The Obamas. Whew child, she loves her some Barack, and Michelle, even more. Which, I mean, who could blame her?At the end of each chapter she gave a theatrical song performance which was lovely. Ms. Lewis is so incredibly talented and deserves more shine and recognition that she's gotten, unfortunately. But to see her performing, read her story, and hear her words you'd immediately put some respect on her name. I love uplifting stories with meaning that encourage and leave a positive impact and this was it. I highly enjoyed this memoir and recommend the audiobook version in her own deep and soulful voice! Keep walking in your joy, Ms. Lewis, and I’ll be doing the same 💗Thank you, Partner @bibliolifestyle @amistadbooksPUB DATE: 8-30-2022

another incredibly hilarious yet wisdom-filled and profoundly insightful book from auntie. like her first book, “the mother of Black hollywood,” “walking in my joy” is honest, vulnerable, and an absolute treat. and listening to the audiobook made the experience even better! it was a pleasant surprise to realize that the “poems” in the book are actually songs and we as the listener get the pleasure of hearing her sing them.hands down one of my favorite audiobooks i’ve ever listened to.

Jenifer Lewis never disappoints. She drops memorable life advice while imparting her personal experiences. The book flows seamlessly and so much of her vibrant personality shines through the text. I would be careful about recommending this book to students as some of the subject matter and language is adulterated. However, for those mature audiences interested in learning more about Ms. Lewis, Behind the scenes in Hollywood, living with mental illness, I would definitely recommend.

Where can you find sharp humor, smart truths and an unforgettable collection of stories? In Jenifer Lewis' new memoir titled Walking in My Joy: In these Streets! The Mother of Black Hollywood has appeared in 68 movies, 40 animations, 4 Broadway productions and over 200 concerts worldwide. She is an accomplished actress, singer, dancer, community activist and author. With the help of Natalie Guerrero, she writes an entertaining collection of essays about memorable adventures and experiences in Walking in My Joy. Jenifer Lewis is Auntie-in-my-Head Jenny that I take advice from because I know she's done it. She's been there, done that and learned. Auntie knows! I was nodding in agreement, highlighting and literally LOL while reading Walking in My Joy. She shares stories of love, self-reflection, joy and pain with such an openness. I'm blessed to be one of the first to read it!Whew—there are some stories and sentences in this book that left my jaw open. Statements we may think but never say aloud. Well, Jenifer Lewis said it for us. She speaks her mind about racism in America, Kanye West, Flint, COVID-19 pandemic, air-fried chicken, aliens and more. She also takes readers along on incredible journeys across the world, unselfishly sharing her personal experiences all the while making us laugh and feel inspired. This memoir truly lives up to its title! One month and a few books later, and I still recollect stories from Walking in My Joy. I can still hear Jenifer Lewis' distinctive voice telling anecdotes with her signature deep laugh. I am quite the avid reader so it is rare for books to hold space in my mental streets like Walking in My Joy does. The motivational message has stuck with me. I originally rated this memoir 4♥️ but the more I sit with it and write this review, it deserves every bit of 5♥️. It is so worth reading, Bookhearts! Happy Pub Day, Jenifer Lewis! Walking in My Joy is now available.Disclaimer: An advance copy was received directly from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Opinions are my own and would be the same if I spent my hard-earned coins. ~LiteraryMarie

This is a phenomenal book. I had the pleasure of receiving an ARC from Amistad Books in exchange for my honest review. I enjoyed every page of it. I actually like this book more than Jenifer’s first book, The Mother Of Black Hollywood. I gave her 1st book 4 stars. This one is definitely 5 stars.⠀In this book Jenifer writes about a wide range of topics. The stories are humorous and touching. She shares each story with no-holds-barred honesty. Each chapter ends with a boldly transparent poem.⠀Now that I’ve read this book I have a much better understanding of Jenifer the woman. After digesting the stories in this book, her loud, boisterous personality makes more sense to me. But, I was also able to see a softer side to Jenifer. Her delivery is raw and unforgiving. Everything I would expect from Auntie . ⠀Walking In My Joy is a good, easy read. If your looking for an engaging book of short stories, I highly recommend this one. It is sure to keep you entertained from the beginning to the end.

Jennifer Lewis is an absolute gem. I had just as much fun with this book as I did with her previous one. She is hilarious, immensely talented and very self aware. This follow-up to “The Mother of Black Hollywood” was more anecdotal and political in nature than it’s predecessor and wow, it was a joy.Jennifer spoke about her anger towards the results of 2016 election and the toll it took on the country. She delved into her fears and family life during the coronavirus pandemic. She explained her relationship with her beloved cousin and the impact he had on her life. But I really appreciated how she detailed her philanthropic efforts as I didn’t know about them beforehand. All in all, it was a solid and quick read - full of affirmative quotes that were so very humorous and uplifting. I loved it - 5 stars, easily!

Another amazing memoir from THE JENIFER LEWIS. I enjoyed this so much. Loved hearing her talk about working on Blackish. I applaud her for including the time the guy she was dating conned her. I know that wasn't easy to talk about and I love her transparency. It can truly happen to anyone, people are just that slick. If you get a chance of course listen to the audio of this because Jenifer's voice is everything. Bravo Jenifer!

I listened to the audiobook and I would suggest that for all 'readers.' Lewis has a voice made to be heard. But put the volume on low lol. She projects to the last row of the theatre. She recounts her life during quarantine and since. She covers topics not discussed in the first book. And she does it all with wit and a bawdy sense of humor. I enjoyed learning of her activism. I guess I always assumed that most activists were brave intellectuals but Lewis never claims to be an intellectual. She's a woman, upset with the way things are going and using her fame to address it.
