You May Kiss the Bride Audiobook Summary

In an unforgettable debut, Lisa Berne introduces you to the Penhallow Dynasty–men destined to marry, but hesitant to love.

Wealthy and arrogant, Gabriel Penhallow knows it’s time to fulfill his dynastic duty. All he must do is follow “The Penhallow way”–find a biddable bride, produce an heir and a spare, and then live separate lives. It’s worked so well for generations, certainly one kiss with the delectable Livia Stuart isn’t going to change things. Society dictates he marry her, and one chit is as good as another as long as she’s from a decent family.

But Livia’s transformation from an original to a mundane diamond of the first water makes Gabriel realize he desperately wants the woman who somehow provoked him into that kiss. And for all the ladies who’ve thrown themselves at him, it’s the one who wants to flee whom he now wants. But how will he keep this independent miss from flying away?

Biddable. Regency man’s code word for mousy, non-questioning, pretty enough to engender other men’s admiration without actually impinging on my desire to continue my life as I choose, without interference or influence by the chosen woman. And it tells me that everyone will be bored to tears, or resentful, and thus continue to prove that marriages in the tonne are on the whole, unfulfilling. And Gabriel wants biddable, and there are few heroes that I have been introduced to who deserve the aftereffects of biddable more. He’s arrogant, spoilt, self-obsessed, and callous with little regard for anyone’s feelings: he’s just frustratingly clueless. The other good thing about the men in romance who demand biddable? They are led, by the nose, on a merry chase, one they are wholly unprepared for. I actually thought it would take a very special woman to want to bother with Gabriel, and I worried that he didn’t have the personality or depth to change. And then came Livia: raised by her Aunt and Uncle after her parent’s death in India, she’s pretty, different from the other ‘girls’ on the debut tour / husband hunt, and caught up in a moment with Gabriel, and finds herself engaged, and she’s not quite sure she’s amenable. From this point forward, Livia tried (and occasionally failed) to defy the label of biddable: while she did take ‘instruction’ from Gabriel’s grandmother on ‘proper behavior’, she also is trying (repeatedly) to assert some levels of independence, particularly when Gabriel flexes his not insignificant selfish idiot muscles. As a couple, this was a hard sell for me for most of the book, particularly as the two never seemed to be in the same emotional place at any one time. Conflicts and revelations are shared frequently, and there are plenty, via a series of scenes and moments that feel very much like small vignettes, adding (and some distracting) from the overall trajectory, with so many flip-flops on Livia’s part, including running FROM Gabriel to become a scullery maid and avoid the marriage, I will admit that I didn’t see them finding a way through due to Gabriel’s most strident reactions (early on) were more from a stung pride than actual emotional investment, and he carried that reserve for much of the book. What Berne did very well here was keep readers engaged with the sweet and spunky Livia, and astound us with the clueless and often asinine behavior of Gabriel, wanting to see him get hit repeatedly by the evolution stick, and find the real man buried under his shell of what he believes he should portray. With several (perhaps too many) different moments of conflict, multiple threads that shared backstories and dreams and a couple of twists that harkened back to books in his genre from twenty or thirty years back in terms of coincidental / contrived scenes set to give the man an emotional awakening, the story still held together and kept me reading through. I can honestly say that Gabriel wouldn’t be my choice for a hero, but he did grow and evolve into a decent character, all because the one he most believed needed to be ‘biddable’ wasn’t. I’m ready for the next book! I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via Avon Addicts and Edelweiss. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility. Fantasy, reality, life. Livia found her world changing with the simple act of a single kiss. I found that I could not help but love Livia. Gabriel at first had my sympathy then that changed to wanting to beat him to loving him again. He just could not understand how just wanting to kiss the chit turned in to her now becoming his wife. He did not want to want her but began to want her more when he saw she was becoming more and more unlike what drew him to her in the beginning. Their chemistry was vibrant. Their interaction was entertain, along with Livia’s interacting with grandmother. This was most certainly a read that I would come back to with each new release in the series. The first of the Penhallow’s have captured me and gave me a dream to dream. Cecily was a pill that took some time to swallow. Livia’s uncle was just the same but at times I thought worse. Gabriel grandmother was matronly but something about her got my attention. Livia had so much thrown at her she just was consumed by it all. She was a strong, independent young woman that spoke her mind and then had it all almost completely stripped away from her. She began to blend and that made her not the jewel Gabriel once valued in her to kiss her. I got me a historical romance that gave me a vibrant description of pomp and circumstances of the regency era and all that could go wrong for a young woman with no means and in the care of family. But at the same time what could go right. Livia was able to move beyond the dictates of society and make something that was truly her own with some help along the way. Gabriel took time to learn that he did not need to follow the history of his people. The detailed tutoring that Livia got about her new surroundings was eye opening and allowed me to learn a few things along the way. That was part of the lure that kept me turning pages.

The H is rather stupid and very lazy. The h has been unloved, and controlled by others. Sadly, the H does the same for much of the story. She's kind and thoughtful, way too forgiving. He didn't grovel nearly enough but I liked the writing and the outcome.

Originally posted on You Have Your Hands FullI picked up You May Kiss the Bride when the Kindle edition was on sale., and I added the audio as well. This is the first book in Lisa Berne’s Penhallow Dynasty series of Regency-set romance novels. Gabriel Penhallow is supposed to marry the perfect girl from the right family, a young woman well-versed in the nuances of Proper Society. And he has every intention of proposing to Cecily; he doesn’t know her at all, but his grandmother says that she is the perfect Penhallow bride. But Gabriel finds himself kissing Livia Stuart in the garden, and when they are discovered, he insists that he will marry Livia. Livia is less than thrilled with this development. She did not intend to kiss Gabriel in the garden, and she knows very little of the world of the aristocracy. She lives with her aunt and uncle because she is an orphan, and very little has been provided to her, but it remains to be seen whether this is due to deliberate negligence or genteel poverty. Gabriel intends to marry Livia and then dump her at his country estate and then go about with his wife. But as he spends time with her in Bath, he discovers that there is more to Livia than he realized. Livia never imagined she could be happy with someone like Gabriel Penhallow, and he even grows to love Gabriel’s formidable grandmother. But is there enough between the two of them to form a genuine and long-lasting love? This is a stunning debut. I felt immersed in the world of the Regency; it’s clear that Berne did her research with this book. Her characters are lively and fleshed out. I like that Livia and Gabriel’s relationship bloomed slowly; this was definitely not a case of instant love and it was riveting to watch their connection evolve as they got to know each other. I think the conflicts that developed were very organic, and although at least one of them could have been resolved with a simple conversation, they still felt genuine rather than manufactured. I would absolutely recommend You May Kiss the Bride. This book is full of surprises, and although there are very somber moments, the overall tone is relatively light. I am certainly looking forward to the next book in the series. I also hope that Gabriel’s cousin Hugo gets his own book- he was the perfect foil for some of the somber moments. I can’t wait for the next Penhallow book!

Livia isn't an interesting marriage candidate because she doesn't have a dowry. Her uncle has taken her in, but isn't happy with her presence, she wears secondhand gowns and other girls in society are looking down on her. When she makes a stunning appearance at a ball Gabriel Penhallow can't help himself and kisses her. Gabriel is an eligible bachelor, a rich member of the ton. Because they are being caught he now has to do his duty and marry Livia. Livia has no say in the matter and is being sent to the Penhallow residence to live with Gabriel's grandmother, who will prepare her for a life as a high society woman. Gabriel just wanted to kiss Livia because he was impressed by her enchanting presence and now he has to marry her. The Penhallows have enough money, so it is of no consequence that she doesn't have a dowry. However, Gabriel finds the situation infuriating and doesn't want to have anything to do with Livia. He will do his duty, but he doesn't have to like it. Will he eventually start to appreciate Livia or is their marriage doomed before it has even officially started? You May Kiss the Bride is a fun romantic story. I immediately loved Livia. She has a good heart and she isn't afraid to speak her mind. I liked that she's both fiery and caring, which is a great combination. She doesn't entirely belong in the world she has now unwillingly entered, but she tries to make the best of it and I admired her spirit and determination. Gabriel is a difficult man to live with because he doesn't show his feelings and he hides behind a cold mask. His cool façade is mostly an act, he's actually a kind man with a gentle nature, but he doesn't let anyone come close. There's so much chemistry between him and Livia that he can't stay away from her. I loved their abundance of sparks and couldn't turn the pages fast enough to see if they would have a happy ending. Lisa Berne writes about splendor and status in an original way. I loved her vibrant descriptions of both the good and the bad sides of high society. Livia has a lot to learn and step by step every important element of her new world is being explained, which is an angle I liked very much. The dialogue is amazing as well, I especially loved the bold way Livia talks to Gabriel's grandmother and their interaction is quite amusing. You May Kiss the Bride has plenty of enjoyable elements and it's entertaining, energetic and sexy. It's a fabulous dreamy story.
