Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot
Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot
Appearing in 33 novels and over 50 short stories, there aren’t many characters more famous than Hercule Poirot. Agatha Christie’s legendary Belgian detective with the pitch-perfect mustache is the epitome of whodunit mysteries just as much as Sherlock Holmes.
Of course, the detective’s popularity is mainly due to Christie’s writing. He’s an interesting character, to say the least. Yet, modern audiences fell in love with him thanks to David Suchet’s portrayal in TV adaptations, as well as other actors’ performances on film and in theater.
Nowadays, we can enjoy his adventures in a new way—through audiobooks. Agatha Christie’s Poirot books are now available as audiobooks on Speechify. As such, allow us to introduce you a bit better to detective Hercule Poirot and his most famous cases.
How Agatha Christie came up with the idea for the character Hercule Poirot
Coming up with the name for the protagonist of her new detective stories, Agatha Christie used two other fictional detectives of her time. Namely, she mixed Lowdes’ Hercule Popeau and Evans’ Jules Poiret, a French policeman working in London, England.
On the other hand, when it comes to his overall personality and the use of his “little grey cells”—as he often says—Christie was clearly influenced by none other than Arthur Conan Doyle. She borrowed some tropes from Doyle’s most famous character, Sherlock Holmes.
Although many would think Poirot is from France, he is actually Belgian. This is because there was a popular English notion during and after World War I. Namely, it was considered patriotic to be sympathetic towards Belgium because of German occupation, which led Britain to go to war.
What makes Hercule Poirot’s character famous
All the Poirot stories are quick to show us that the Belgian detective is a famous man all across the English Channel. There are two main reasons why policemen and other private detectives think of him so highly. The first one is pretty obvious—Poirot is highly intelligent. He possesses an amazing ability to understand the criminal mind. On the flip side, they also know him rather well due to his appearance. He is a man with—as Christie describes—a magnificent mustache.
Some of the cases solved by Hercule Poirot
As mentioned, Hercule Poirot appears in over 30 novels and more than 50 short stories. This, unfortunately, means that we can’t provide you with a summary of them all here. However, we can still pick our favorites and explain why we think they are so great.

That was certainly the case when a 20th century critic wrote a derogatory article in the New York Magazine, stating:
“Who cares Who Killed Roger Ackroyd?”–Edmund Wilson
He added: “Wasteful of time and degrading to the intellect.”
We learn that Wilson was long since misguided when he said he had outgrown detective stories by the time he was twelve-years-old. His comment was degraded by publisher, editor, and critic, Howard Haycraft. He called this story:
“One of the most influential crime novels ever written.”
In Great Britain, in 2013, the Crime Writer’s Association listed it as the best crime novel ever, just one of the many accolades accorded Agatha Christie, the bestselling author in history. Her works have always achieved vast audiences, ignoring any criticism. Some critics consider this to be the masterpiece of all the stand-alone novels written by Christie.
As you listen with us, you will inevitably agree that there is an innovative ending with a highly unusual twist. You can now hear that for yourself.

Beloved detective Hercule Poirot embarks on a journey to Egypt in one of Agatha Christie’s most famous mysteries.
The tranquility of a luxury cruise along the Nile was shattered by the discovery that Linnet Ridgeway had been shot through the head. She was young, stylish, and beautiful. A girl who had everything . . . until she lost her life.
Hercule Poirot recalled an earlier outburst by a fellow passenger: “I’d like to put my dear little pistol against her head and just press the trigger.” Yet under the searing heat of the Egyptian sun, nothing is ever quite what it seems.
A sweeping mystery of love, jealousy, and betrayal, Death on the Nile is one of Christie’s most legendary and timeless works.

The mainstream adoption of Hercule Poirot
As mentioned, Hercule Poirot is one of the most popular fictional detectives out there. Therefore, it’s no wonder why his adventures were adopted into so many films, TV series, and theater plays over the years. Of course, the most notable of these adaptations is the one in which David Suchet plays the Belgian detective but isn’t the only famous actor to feature. Others include Pauline Moran as Miss Felicity Lemon and Philip Jackson as Hastings.
