Octavia Estelle Butler was a New York Times bestselling science fiction writer, and she was born in 1947 in Pasadena, California. During her life, she managed to win multiple awards and become one of the most popular sci-fi writers. Octavia Butler published her first book in 1971.

After finishing John Muir High School and Pasadena City College, she enrolled with California State University, Los Angeles, but transferred to writing courses via UCLA extension. It wasn’t long before she managed to impress her teacher Harlan Ellison, and started making a name for herself. She also attended the Clarion Science Fiction Writers Workshop.

Butler won Hugo Award for Best Short Story (Speech Sounds), the Nebula Award for Best Novelette, the Locus Award for Best Novelette, the Arthur C. Clarke Award, and the Lifetime Achievement Award in Writing. In addition, she was inducted by the Science Fiction Hall of Fame, and she was the first sci-fi writer to be awarded a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation fellowship.

The MacArthur fellowship was a reward that also included a grant for talented writers. Her papers are held in the Huntington Library.
