Best books recommended by actor Diedrich Bader
Do you often find yourself perusing Amazon Audible or Speechify Audiobooks while trying to find the next great book to read?
Perhaps it would help if you relied on a Hollywood star’s recommendations.
Diedrich Bader is an American actor who made his name in shows and films like Napoleon Dynamite, Office Space, and Ice Age. These are the best books he recommends. Who knows? You may get insight into what makes Bader so successful if you read some of his favorite books.
Who is Diedrich Bader?
Born in Alexandria, Virginia in 1966, Diedrich Bader moved to Paris, France when he was just two years old. There, he developed a love of films, particularly those starring legends like Charlie Chaplin and Fred Astaire.
He got his first taste for acting when he was four. While watching a Chaplin film at a theatre, Bader found himself running onto the stage when the film reel burned. One imitation of the “Little Tramp” later, Bader got his first taste of audience adulation.
When his family returned to the United States, Bader began high school and started auditioning for acting roles. Upon graduating, he moved to Los Angeles, where he started landing guest spots.
Appearances in TV shows like Cheers, Quantum Leap, and Star Trek: The Next Generation followed. Soon after, Bader started appearing in films such as The Beverly Hillbillies.
But his big break came when he was cast in The Drew Carey Show. Playing the part of Oswald Lee Harvey, Bader was one of Draw Carey’s best friends in one of America’s longest-running sitcoms.
More movie roles followed, as did a career as a voice actor. Bader landed a part in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean films, in addition to voicing Batman in Scooby-Doo & Batman: The Brave and the Bold.
Today, Bader’s career continues to move on to bigger and better things. He (or his voice) has starred in Outsourced, ABC’s Veep, American Housewife, and many animated series and films.

Angel in the Whirlwind by Benson Bobrick
Charting the tale of America, from its roots as a British colony to its independence, Angel in the Whirlwind is a fascinating historical account.
Bobrick writes a book that delves into all the major battles of the war for independence. He also offers insight into some of America’s lesser-known allies during this period.
The Kindness of Strangers by Mike McIntyre
Moving from American history to a modern story of hope in the United States, The Kindness of Strangers shows the generosity of the average person.
The book follows the real-life tale of Mike McIntyre. Jobless and penniless, he begins a trek across America. Throughout his journey, he relies upon strangers to provide shelter, food, warmth, or a simple human connection to get him through his trip.
A Time of Gifts by Patrick Leigh Femor
Bader’s love of history (and long treks) is made more apparent by his love of A Time of Gifts. Transporting the reader to the 1930s, the book follows Patrick Leigh Fermor as he walks from the Hook of Holland to Constantinople.
In addition to being a wonderful tale of grit and endurance, the book offers first-hand recounts of the tensions bubbling over in Europe during this difficult period.
A Girl Like I by Anita Loos
For those who love the gossip and scandal of Golden Age Hollywood, A Girl Like I is a perfect read.
The book serves as an autobiography for its author, Anita Loos. But the real draw is her tales about a bygone era when movie stars were mysterious and adored in ways we can’t fathom today.
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett
A Classic of modern literature, The Secret Garden whisks the reader into a fascinating adventure. The tale starts with a young girl named Mary Lennox. Sent to live under her uncle’s care, she spends her time exploring his massive estate.
One day, she comes across a walled-off garden. Intrigued by the mysteries it holds, this garden becomes Lennox’s sanctuary. As she tends to the neglected garden, it springs back into life, enriching the lives of those it touches in the process.
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith
Much like The Secret Garden, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is a coming-of-age story. It also follows a young girl, this time named Francie Nolan.
Living in the Brooklyn slums, Nolan has a tough life that her eccentric family doesn’t aid. “Raw” is the perfect word for this book. Readers are drawn in by the often overwhelming challenges that Nolan faces.
But through it all, uplifting messages about hope and growth inspire you to keep reading.
One Nation Under God by Kevin M. Kruse
Don’t let the sarcastic title fool you. One Nation Under God is a scathing indictment of the influence that corporations hold over the United States.
Kruse discusses how business leaders recruited religious activists to spread their message in the wake of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal.
It also charts the rise of Dwight Eisenhower and how his election led to a special form of corporate-branded Christianity entering the American household.
