Heartstopper series

Heartstopper gained a sizable online following after debuting as a webcomic on Tumblr and Tapas, garnering over 52.1 million views. This young adult story then had massive success as a graphic novel series and later as a Netflix series and TV show.

This unique series is loved by many – it tells a heartwarming story about young love, is relatable to all teenagers, but especially to the LGBTQ community, and beautifully shows the world why representation matters.

Heartstopper graphic novels are available in five volumes, along with the Heartstopper Yearbook and Heartstopper Coloring Book. This heartening story captivated the hearts of many, making Charlie and Nick heroes of all teen misfits.

Author Alice Oseman

Alice Oseman, the author of the bestseller Heartstopper series, was born in 1994 in Kent, England. She is an award-winning author, illustrator, and screenwriter who also wrote four young adult novels: Solitaire, Radio Silence, I Was Born for This, and Loveless.

Getting her first book deal at only 17, Alice is a wonderful example of what a talented, compassionate, and dedicated young person can achieve.

The 2014 publication of Oseman’s debut book Solitaire tells the tale of pessimistic adolescent Tori Spring and her encounter with Michael, who is the complete opposite of her. Back then, young Alice Oseman was a rising star, and now she’s an accomplished and successful author.

In 2016, Alice graduated from Durham University with a Bachelor of Arts in English literature. Oseman uses the pronouns she/her and they/them.

Genre of the Heartstopper books

The Heartstopper books are young adult LGBTQ teen romance graphic novels starring Charlie Spring and Nick Nelson.

The difficulties of coming out and how someone attracted to persons of the same sex learns to accept themselves in a society where judgment and criticism are common – are the main themes of Heartstopper.

Ten months before meeting Nick, Charlie came out as gay to a few of his friends. The books illustrate how a young person copes with approval, mental illness, and just a pure mess of a teen romance.

Plot of Heartstopper

As Netflix describes the storyline: ‘’Boy meets boy. Boys become friends. Boys fall in love.’’ Best friends usually make the finest romantic couples, but what does this journey look like for gay teenagers?

Bestseller Heartstopper: Volume 1 focuses on Charlie Spring, a teenager who is openly gay and attends a grammar school for males only. Charlie is tense and apprehensive, but as he becomes friends with the school’s rugby player, Nick Nelson, he starts to loosen up a bit.

Despite being great friends, things between Nick and Charlie have altered after an impromptu kiss in Heartstopper Volume 2. In the aftermath, Charlie believes he messed up, but Nick is now more bewildered than ever.

Nick gains a fresh perspective on the world as a result of the mysterious ways of love. We all remember the first time we fell in love and all the emotions that came with it.

Heartstopper highlights the challenges and stakes of a gay love story but also illustrates how love is love and how all butterflies in our stomachs are the same for everyone.

How many books are there in the Heartstopper series?

Heartstopper started as a webcomic, then gradually grew into a graphic novel series of 5 volumes, including:

  • Heartstopper Volume One
  • Heartstopper Volume Two
  • Heartstopper Volume Three
  • Heartstopper Volume Four

Author Alice Oseman indicated in October of last year that volume five would be released later than anticipated. The precise date of release is still unknown, though it was supposed to be published on February 2, 2023.

The fifth volume will give us the ending of Charlie’s and Nick’s story, and though we don’t really want it to end, we are still eager to see how Heartstopper finishes.

Heartstopper Netflix series

In this coming-of-age series, Charlie (Joe Locke) and Nick (Kit Connor) discover that their unlikely friendship might be more as they deal with high school and their first love. Heartstopper season 1 is available on Netflix.

Although no exact release date has been announced, Heartstopper season 2 is most expected to debut in the fourth quarter of 2023.

Teens – and adults, too – around the globe are loving the series. Heartstopper has a high rating on IMDb (8.7/10), and we can safely expect great things from the second season as well. Feel free to add it to your wishlist straight away.

For example, USA Today critic Kelly Lawler said this about the show: ‘’There are some TV series so sweet, so joyous and so wonderful that the mere mention of them can make you smile. Netflix’s Heartstopper is one of those shows.’’
