How to Train your Dragon TV Series adaptation
How to Train your Dragon was adapted into a television series called DreamWorks Dragons. The first season aired on Cartoon Network, where the show stayed until 2014. From 2015 to 2018, it streamed on Netflix.
The original idea behind the show was to bridge the first and the second movie, How to Train Your Dragon 2. Running for eight seasons, the series fleshed out a lot of the characters presented in the first movie while doing a lot of worldbuilding and introducing new dragons in the meanwhile.
The series is typically divided into three parts:
- Dragons: Riders of Berk (season 1)
- Dragons: Defenders of Berk (season 2)
- Dragons: Race to the Edge (seasons 3–8)
In addition, there is also a short series released on Hulu called DreamWorks Dragons: The Nine Realms, as well as a children’s series called DreamWorks Dragons: Rescue Riders.
How to Train your Dragon movie adaptations
The DreamWorks Animation studio also adapted the series into a movie franchise directed by Dean DeBlois and starring Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, America Ferrera, and Kristen Wiig. There have been three films so far:
- How to Train Your Dragon (2010) — The first film is probably the most beloved in the series. It introduced Hiccup and Toothless, the dragon he was unable to kill and instead chose to befriend, Astrid, Hiccup’s crush, and a whole other set of supporting characters, such as Fishlegs, Snotlout, Ruffnut, and Tuffnut.
- How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014) — The second movie takes place half a decade later and introduces Hiccup’s long-lost mother and Drago, a crazy villain who wants to control the world.
- How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019) — In the third movie, Hiccup is chasing an actual dragon utopia and fighting Grimmel, the villain, while Toothless has a cute relationship with another dragon, Light Fury.
The whole series has been a large success. It grossed over $1 billion worldwide and has been nominated for multiple Academy Awards owing to its beautiful animation and storytelling.
In addition to the feature-length movies, there are also some shorts, such as How to Train Your Dragon: Homecoming, Legend of the Boneknapper Dragon, Dragons: Gift of the Night Fury, Dawn of the Dragon Racers, Book of Dragons, and Dragons: Gift of the Night Fury.
