How to read the Joe Pickett series in order
The Joe Pickett novels are a murder mystery series by the American author C.J. Box. The series features almost two dozen novels, with some additional short story collections to flesh everything out, so you’ll have a lot of reading to do to catch up.
Author of Joe Pickett books
C. J. Box is an American New York Times best-selling author of crime and mystery novels. He was born in 1958 in Wyoming, where a lot of his work takes place. He remains most known for his Joe Pickett novels centering on a Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett doubling down as detective as numerous murder cases keep happening around him.
In addition to the Joe Pickett novels, Box has also penned the Cody Hoyt/Cassie Dewell series (featuring novels such as The Highway), as well as a number of short stories and some standalone novels, one of which (Blue Haven) won him the Edgar Award for Best Novel in 2009. He’s also won Anthony, Macavity, Gumshoe, and Barry awards.
Exploring the writings of C.J. Box
Box is an outdoorsman. He enjoys fishing and hiking, and he’s an active participant in outdoor activities in his home state of Wyoming, and his passion for nature and wilderness is evident in his writings.
In most of his novels, Box explores the theme of nature conservation, flora and fauna preservation, the clash between rural and urban values, as well as the impact humans have on small-town and rural communities in the United States.
Such topics necessarily introduce an element of the battle between the traditional and the modern. Box’s novels have been noted for their sense of rootedness in tradition and insight into familial and communal relationships in small-town America as set against all the injustices brought upon it by excessive use of technology, abuse of power, and corruption.
Joe Pickett series in publication order
The Joe Pickett series features twenty-three novels published in the past couple of decades. They follow the titular character, Joe Pickett, a Wyoming game warden who keeps finding himself involved in unexpected criminal investigations while trying to balance all the duties that come with his position.
The series often features staggeringly moving depictions of Wyoming and its natural beauties, which are a perfect setting for Box’s themes of social and environmental issues.
The suggested reading order for the series is the chronological order. The first novel came out in 2001, and the rest of the series was published as follows:

When the call comes in on the radio, Joe Pickett can hardly believe his ears: game wardens have found a hunter dead at a camp in the mountains – strung up, gutted, skinned, and beheaded, as if he were the elk he’d been pursuing. A spent cartridge and a poker chip lie next to his body. Ripples of horror spread through the community, and with a possibly psychotic killer on the loose, Governor Rulon is forced to end hunting season early for the first time in state history – outraging hunters and potentially crippling the state’s income from the loss of hunting license revenue. But when the brutal murders eerily coincide with the arrival of radical anti-hunting activist Klamath Moore, Pickett knows the Governor’s ruling is the least of his worries. Are the murders the work of a deranged activist or of a lone psychopath with a personal vendetta? As always, Joe Pickett is the governor’s go-to man, and he’s put on the case to track the murderous hunter, as more bodies – and poker chips – turn up.

Wyoming’s new governor isn’t sure what to make of Joe Pickett, but he has a job for him that is extremely delicate. A prominent female British executive never came home from the high-end guest ranch she was visiting, and the British Embassy is pressing hard. Pickett knows that happens sometimes-these ranches are stocked with handsome young cowboys, and “ranch romances” aren’t uncommon. But no sign of her months after she vanished? That suggests something else. At the same time, his friend Nate Romanowski has asked Joe to intervene with the feds on behalf of falconers who can no longer hunt with eagles even though their permits are in order. Who is blocking the falconers and why? The more he investigates both cases, the more someone wants him to go away. Is it because of the missing woman or because he’s become Nate’s advocate? Or are they somehow connected? The answers, when they come, will be even worse than he’d imagined.
