Numberphile is cool. I’ve been a subscriber of that channel for years now (from back when I wasn’t, technically, a mathematician) and I also support the channel financially with a little of my money every month. I am of the belief that any medium that presents mathematics to the general public should be endorsed and encouraged. Mathematics is a very ‘uncool’ thing to the media, and to people in general. More ‘uncool’ than physics, chemistry, biology and computer science, say, and people say ‘sciencey stuff’ is not cool. Endorsing somebody who popularizes mathematics to the general public is a no-brainer for me. Indeed, the principal reason why I answer maths questions on Quora is to contribute a little to this mathematics popularization business. I wish there was something similar to Numberphile in my country. Maybe that should be one of my personal missions — to popularize mathematics to the general Maltese public. (I’m sure that more non-Maltese people know about my mathematical endeavours on Quora than Maltese people know about my mathematical endeavours in general.) Maybe I’ll make that a 2017 resolution… who knows?

Numberphile is produced by video journalist Brady Haran. The stars of the show include mathematicians and other guests from around the world. Topics range from the sublime to the ridiculous… from historic discoveries to latest breakthroughs. In addition to hundreds of videos, we also have a podcast featuring longer-form interviews. The project is supported by (and often filmed at) the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute. Support also comes from The Science Sandbox and The Akamai Foundation. And of course our viewers and generous patrons. In addition to our main YouTube channel, extra footage is uploaded to a second channel called Numberphile2. My Take The website would be helpful to prepare reading and writing activities for classrooms for all grade levels. How I Use It This website provides valuable resources to plan classroom reading and writing activities and to provide student interactive practice. Each activity provides a preview, getting started section, as well as a link to other related activities. This review is part of a PLC activity. The website is not currently being used in my classroom.

This week, I'm going to share an educational channel about math called Numberphile, but don't hit the back button on your browser and let the content scare you off; I promise it's really interesting. I'm personally not great at math, but watching these videos makes the concepts much less daunting and shows how complex theories can be broken down simply.

Are you interested in numbers? This site has a variety of videos about math theories that are at the forefront of research. Easy, understandable language presents each topic, and this is an entertaining way for anyone to learn fascinating facts about numbers. The Numberphile covers a very broad scope of topics such as Why do people hate mathematics, AMAZING Dice Rolls, and Sounds of PI. Videos vary in length, although most remain well under 15 minutes. Even those who believe they are not good at math will like learning interesting facts about numbers. The videos are hosted on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, then they may not be viewable; be sure to look at alternatives for sharing the conversation starters and other videos on classroom computers.

Numberphile is a free site featuring short math films created by Australian video journalist Brady Haran. Sponsored by organizations including the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, Numberphile videos feature mathematicians describing interesting mathematics scenarios and insights. Problems featured are designed to be engaging and spark animated discussion. Users can browse the videos on this site (by tapping illustrations that symbolize each video's content) or explore the same content via the developer's YouTube channel (by using that site's search features to browse by topic and title).
