Screen recording is a handy feature that allows you to capture a video of what's happening on your device screen. Whether you're creating a tutorial, a demonstration, or just want to share something interesting, screen recording tools can be incredibly useful. Apple's iOS and macOS devices come with a built-in screen recording feature that makes this process straightforward. This article will guide you on how to create a screen recording, add audio, and edit the recorded video on iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices.

Creating a Screen Recording on iOS Devices

Starting with iOS 11, the screen recording feature became a built-in tool on iPhone and iPad screens. Here are the simple steps to start recording your iPhone screen:

  1. Open the 'Control Center' by swiping up from the bottom of your screen or swiping down from the top-right corner if you're using an iPhone X or later.
  2. Locate the 'Screen Recording' button (it looks like a record icon) and press it. You'll see a countdown before the recording starts.
  3. To stop recording, either open the Control Center again and tap the 'Stop' button or tap the red status bar at the top of your screen and confirm your action.

Note: Ensure you have allowed 'Screen Recording' in the Control Center via Settings > Control Center > Customize Controls.

Adding Audio to iOS Screen Recording

If your screen recording has no sound, it's likely because the microphone audio was not enabled during the recording. Follow these steps to record screen with sound on your iPhone or iPad:

  1. Open the Control Center.
  2. Press and hold the 'Screen Recording' button until additional options appear.
  3. Tap the 'Microphone' icon to turn on audio recording. The icon will turn red when it's active.
  4. Hit the 'Start Recording' button, and after a 3-second countdown, your screen (and audio) will start being recorded.

Creating a Screen Recording on macOS

On a Mac, you can use the QuickTime Player for screen recording. Here are the steps:

  1. Open QuickTime Player from your Applications folder.
  2. Click on 'File' in the menu bar, then select 'New Screen Recording'.
  3. If you want to record audio, click on the 'Microphone' button and select the audio input.
  4. Press the 'Record' button. You can choose to record the entire screen or drag to select a portion.
  5. To stop recording, click on the 'Stop Recording' button in the menu bar, or press Command-Control-Esc.

Adding Audio to macOS Screen Recording

The QuickTime Player allows you to record system audio and voiceovers using the built-in microphone or an external device. Before starting your screen recording, click on the arrow next to the record button and choose the microphone or audio device you want to use for the recording.

Editing Your Screen Recordings

After recording your screen, you can use various video editing tools to enhance your recording. On iOS, the Photos app allows you to trim your videos, while macOS users can use iMovie for more advanced editing. iMovie offers a range of editing tools including cropping, adding transitions, and even adding background music.

Adding Background Music

iMovie is a great tool for adding background music to your screen recordings. If you're looking for free music, the App Store, and online platforms like YouTube Audio Library, offer a plethora of options. Once you've downloaded your chosen track, import it to iMovie and add it to your project.

Remember, always respect copyright laws when using third-party music.

Screen Recording on Other Platforms

While this guide focused on Apple devices, screen recording is also possible on other platforms like Microsoft's Windows and Google's Chrome OS. Each platform has its own set of screen recording tools, some built-in and some available for download from their respective app stores.

For instance, on a Windows device, you can use the built-in Xbox Game Bar for screen recording, and on a Chrome device, you can use the built-in Screen Capture tool. Both platforms also offer a variety of third-party screen recording tools with different features and capabilities.

Adding Audio to Screen Recordings on Other Platforms

Adding audio to screen recordings on non-Apple devices is also possible. Just like on iOS and macOS, you can typically choose to record system audio, microphone audio, or both, depending on what you want to achieve.

On Windows, for instance, you can choose to record system audio and microphone audio separately in the recording settings of the Xbox Game Bar. On Chrome OS, you can choose to record microphone audio in the screen capture tool's settings before you start recording.

Screen recording is a useful feature for capturing and sharing what's happening on your device screen. Whether you're using an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or a non-Apple device, you can record your screen, add audio, and edit your recordings using various tools.

Just remember, if your screen recording has no sound, it's probably because the microphone or system audio wasn't enabled during the recording. So, always check your settings before you start recording. And if you're adding music or voiceovers to your recordings, always respect copyright laws and only use content you have permission to use.
