Speechify for DSA
Speechify supports students through the UK’s Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA), improving accessibility, productivity, and independent learning for assessors, trainers, and students.

What is Speechify?
Speechify is the world's #1 text to speech platform, transforming text into lifelike audio. Designed for students who face reading, comprehension, or focus challenges, Speechify offers tools to enhance learning accessibility and efficiency.
240+ Human Voices
Students can seamlessly turn academic text into natural-sounding audio and listen in 240+ lifelike Al voices across 60+ languages, including celebrity voices

Personalised Reading
Speechify lets students customise their reading experience by adjusting speed, voices, colours, and fonts, and organising documents into folders

Text Highlighting
Speechify reads text aloud while highlighting sentences to help students stay focused, retain more information, and learn more efficiently at their own pace

Students can embrace the freedom to explore, engage, and excel in their studies like never before, whether at home on a desktop, on the go or even offline

When using the Speechify mobile app, students can quickly scan physical documents, books, or handwritten notes and convert them to audio

Speechify offers quick Al summaries and the ability to generate multiple-choice quizzes of their academic text. This helps to improve their memory retention and reduce overwhelm when faced with lengthy text
How Speechify Supports Students
Speechify provides auditory support that helps students with disabilities engage with text and unlock their learning potential
Visual Processing and Visual Impairments
Speechify offers an auditory alternative for students who struggle with visual text processing, including those with visual stress. It provides access to over 200 lifelike voices for comfortable, extended listening.

Attention and Focus
Students can mix background music with audio text to stay engaged and focused for longer. Listening while moving or doing low-level activities can also improve concentration and productivity.

Dyslexia Support
Speechify helps dyslexic students focus on understanding by removing the barrier of text decoding. Synchronized highlighting supports following along as text is read aloud.

Fatigue Related Conditions
Students with chronic fatigue or other conditions that limit sustained reading can use Speechify to access course materials without exhaustion. Listening instead of reading helps manage energy levels and build study stamina.

Cognitive Load Reduction
Speechify reduces the mental strain of processing text, helping students with fatigue or brain fog absorb information more easily. By offering an auditory option, it shifts focus from the mechanics of reading to understanding.

FAQ
Yes, Speechify has been approved by the SLC as assistive technology and can be recommended as part of a DSA package during a needs assessment.
The Disabled Students' Allowance provides support to help you excel in higher education by addressing challenges you might face, whether they relate to academic studies, physical accessibility, or overall well-being.
Although it's called an 'allowance', you won't receive money directly. Instead, when you are awarded DSA, you can arrange support through approved providers (based on your location) who receive funding directly from your student finance body.
Eligibility
You may be eligible for DSA if you have:
- A disability
- A mental health condition
- A neurodivergent condition
- A chronic illness
- A learning difference
If you're unsure about your eligibility, please visit the government's eligibility criteria.
