All-time favorites usually include Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, and The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell is usually on the top of an avid reader’s wish list. This dystopian novel can still draw parallels to today’s crazy world and has been a bestseller for decades. This article will show you how you can listen to this popular book without spending a lot of money.

Who is George Orwell?

Eric Authur Blair was born in India on June 25, 1903. This famous English author published his works under the pseudonym of George Orwell. At the age of 30, he published his first book, Down and Out In Paris and London. This autobiographical novel recounts the guilt he felt as being well off and how he dressed like a beggar and took low-paying jobs. Orwell’s early years in India were those of contradiction. His father was a minor British official in the Indian civil service. His mother was from France and her family ran an unsuccessful teak business in Burma. His parents acted the part of the upper class but didn’t have any wealth. The family moved to England while Eric was a child. During high school, Eric was known for two things: his poverty and his intelligence. Winning two scholarships, he was briefly taught by Aldous Huxley, the author of Brave New World. Instead of continuing his education, he followed the family tradition and moved to Burma and found employment as an assistant district supervisor in the Indian Imperial Police. His experiences here were later recounted in his novel Burmese Days, a book that focused on the injustices of a country being ruled by others. George Orwell is known as a critic of imperialism, colonialism, totalitarianism, and the bourgeois lifestyle. He moved to Spain to cover the Spanish Civil War and in 1938, published Homage to Catalonia. During World War II, he was rejected for military service and worked as a journalist for the BBC. He left that job in 1943, choosing to write for a left-wing socialist paper. His literary achievements include A Clergyman’s Daughter, Animal Farm, and many others. His best-known work is Nineteen Eighty-Four.

What is 1984 about?

Nineteen Eight-Four is a bestseller that follows Winston Smith, a low-level member of the Ruling party. This dystopian novel rings true today for many readers with its talk of thought crimes, thought police, and the Ministry of Truth. Nineteen Eighty-Four has been on the required reading list in high schools for quite some time. Every aspect of Winston Smith’s life is watched by Big Brother, the omniscient leader of the Party. This is common for everyone. The Party controls everything in this dystopian world and is currently forcing the implementation of a new language referred to as Newspeak. This is an attempt by Big Brother to restrict certain words and eliminate any chances of political rebellion. Any thoughts of overthrowing the government are considered illegal and are regarded as a thoughtcrime. Like many others, Winston Smith is frustrated by being unable to express his true thoughts without punishment. He illegally purchases a diary so he can write down his rebellious feelings and ideas. He’s also become obsessed with a powerful Party member whom he believes is secretly aligned with the Brotherhood, a rumored group that wants to overthrow the Party. He works for the Ministry of Truth and his responsibility is to alter historical records to better fit the narrative of the Party. His interests soon focus on a beautiful co-worker, however, he fears she’s an informant who will turn on him and report him to the thought police for his thought crimes. This is a dangerous time when sex, eating certain foods, and any type of free thought is absolutely forbidden. Nineteen Eighty-Four teaches readers about the dangers of autocracy, extremism, and the horrors of an oppressive government.
