How to watch the Ed and Lorraine Warren movies in order
Lorraine and Ed Warren—They are two names known to all true fans of horror and connoisseurs of the paranormal, and a couple whose work inspired some of the most popular horror films in recent years.
Who are Ed and Lorraine Warren?
Edward Warren Miney (1926–2006) and Lorraine Rita Warren (1927–2019) were a couple of American paranormal investigators, demonologists, and authors from Connecticut. They were involved in a number of paranormal cases of alleged hauntings and exorcisms, and Lorraine supposedly possessed clairvoyant powers.
The Warrens met as teenagers and got married in the mid-’40s. They started investigating demonic possessions and similar cases in the ‘50s when they founded the New England Society for Psychic Research (NESPR), a ghost-hunting group.
The couple were Catholic, and their faith informed a lot of their work, especially their writings on demonology. They’ve also written about their methodology and investigations.
Some of the most famous cases tackled by the Warrens include the Amityville Horror, the Enfield Poltergeist, and The Haunting in Connecticut. If some of those sound familiar, it’s because they’ve inspired several horror movies.
Adaptations of their work
There have been several adaptations of the Warrens’ work over the past few decades, either based directly on partially inspired by some of the allegedly real-life cases they covered. Most recently, James Wan’s The Conjuring films have drawn the most attention from critics and viewers alike.
The Conjuring universe
The Conjuring cinematic universe comprises several Warner Bros sub-series based on the work of Ed and Lorraine Warren, played in the movies by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga. The Conjuring franchise was kickstarted in 2013 when the first film came out, depicting the investigation of the Perron haunted house in Rhode Island.

The Annabelle series
The Annabelle series comprises three movies set in The Conjuring universe: Annabelle (2014), Annabelle: Creation (2017), and Annabelle Comes Home (2019).
The first film was a prequel to 2013 The Conjuring. It told the story of the possessed doll Annabelle, brought into their home by John and Mia, a couple from Santa Monica. The movie was directed by John R. Leonetti and stars Annabelle Wallis as Mia, Ward Horton as her husband John, and Tony Amendola as Father Perez.
The second installment was yet another prequel, taking place before the first Annabelle movie. It told the story of Samuel Mullins, a dollmaker, and his wife, Esther, suffering from grief after their daughter’s passing—and being terrorized by the doll after an orphan girl in charge of a local nun discovers it. The movie was directed by David F. Sandberg and stars Stephanie Sigman, Talitha Bateman, Anthony LaPaglia, and Miranda Otto.
The third movie was chronologically a sequel to the first one. It centered on the Warrens, now in possession of the Annabelle doll and targeted by a number of demons awakened by its presence. The movie is directed by Gary Dauberman and stars Mckenna Grace, Madison Iseman, Katie Sarife, Vera Farmiga, and Patrick Wilson. The movie met with mixed reviews, although it did decently well at the box office.
In what order should I watch The Conjuring movies?
With all its spin-offs, The Conjuring timeline spans decades, going back to the ‘50s when a demonic nun, an incarnation of Valak introduced in The Conjuring 2, raised hell in Romania. It then moves on to Judy Warren’s childhood and the time her babysitter awakened the doll, and eventually reaches the events surrounding the famous exorcism and Trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson in 1981.
While you could technically watch any movie first, it is highly advisable that you follow an organized watching order if you want to see how the story and the lore evolved.
