From musician to sports journalist - a biography of Mitch Albom
Mitch Albom was born in Passaic, New Jersey, in 1958. Initially, he wanted to become a cartoonist and then a musician, but eventually graduated with a bachelor's degree in sociology from Brandeis University. But Albom stayed true to his ambition of becoming a musician and wrote and produced several songs. While in New York, he started volunteering and freelancing in journalism. He returned to college to study journalism and earned an MJ and MBA at Columbia University.
After contributing to publications such as GEO, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and Sports Illustrated, he moved to Detroit and joined The Detroit Free Press. His columns were gathered into the best-selling collectible Live Albom books. Music still played a role in his life. In the early 1990s, he joined the Rock Bottom Remainders, a band that went on to have moderate success.
In 1995, he married Janine Sabino. The same year, he ran into his former professor, Morrie Schwartz, who was battling Lou Gehrig's disease. Mitch decided to document his weekly conversations with Morrie in a book, with the proceeds going toward the medical costs. Since writing Tuesdays with Morrie, Albom has written several successful novels.
Mitch Albom has won multiple awards, including Red Smith Award for lifetime achievement by the Associated Press Sports Editors in 2010. He was the 1998 National Sports Media Association Sportswriter of the Year. In May 2017, he entered the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame.
