What is Percy Jackson and the Olympians about?

There are five books in the original series:

The Lightning Thief (2005)

In the first book, we’re introduced to Percy Jackson and his friends, who are demigods (part-human/part-god). When the twelve-year-old finds out his father is Poseidon, he enrolls in Camp Half-Blood, a training camp for demigods. When he’s accused of stealing Zeus’s lightning bolt, he and his friends, Grover and Annabeth, must travel across the U.S. on a dangerous mission to find the stolen weapon.

The Sea of Monsters (2006)

Percy and his friends must travel to the Bermuda Triangle, also known as the Sea of Monsters, in order to save Camp Half-Blood. In The Sea of Monsters, Percy also learns about a prophecy stating that a child of one of "the Big Three" gods, Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades, must save Olympus by defeating Kronos, the Titan King.

The Titan’s Curse (2007)

“The Titan’s Curse” follows the heroes on a dangerous new mission. Not only do they have to fight against Kronos, but an ancient monster. Percy must find Artemis, the only goddess who knows how to capture the monster.

The Battle of the Labyrinth (2008)

Camp Half-Blood is not safe anymore. Percy, Annabeth, and Grover must find their way through Daedalus’s Labyrinth to try to prevent Kronos’s army from attacking their home. The end of the book marks the beginning of the Battle of the Labyrinth and the War on Olympus.

The Last Olympian (2009)

War is finally here. Kronos and his Titans attack New York City together with the monster Typhon. The long-awaited prophecy will come true on Percy Jackson’s 16th birthday when all the camp demigods and the gods of Olympus must fight Kronos and his army.

Even though the sixth book of the Camp Half-Blood Chronicles hasn’t come out yet, the story continues in the sequels The Heroes of Olympus and The Trials of Apollo.

About the author and narrator

Percy Jackson and the Olympians was written by Rick Riordan. He came up with the Percy Jackson series for his teenage son, who is dyslexic and loves Greek mythology. The Percy Jackson books have sold over 180 million copies, making them one of the best-selling series in the world. The books were published by Hyperion Books in the U.S. and Penguin Books in the UK.

The first book, The Lightning Thief, became a New York Times bestseller and was adapted into a movie. Following the success of the first movie, the second book also got a movie adaptation, but it wasn’t successful.

Apart from the Percy Jackson books, Riordan also wrote other Greek mythology books and short stories, like the Heroes of Olympus series:

  • The Lost Hero (2010)
  • The Son of Neptune (2011)
  • The Mark of Athena (2012)
  • The House of Hades (2013)
  • The Blood of Olympus (2014)

Riordan authored other books unrelated to Percy Jackson, including Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, Hotel Valhalla, and The 39 Clues.

He also wrote Percy Jackson and the Olympians: the Ultimate Guide, which covers all things Percy. This manual-size POB comes with a magnetic flap enclosure and trading cards.

The entire Percy Jackson series and many other books written by Rick Riordan are available in audiobook format. Jesse Bernstein is the narrator of the Percy Jackson audiobooks.
