For many students, learning challenges are not about intelligence but about how information is delivered and understood. For David Wild, education has always been tied to that reality. Growing up with a learning disability, Wild spent much of his childhood in special education and was often told that higher education might not be in his future. Traditional learning environments emphasized memorization and standardized measurements of performance, which made it difficult for him to demonstrate the way his mind actually worked.

“I grew up with a learning disability and spent my childhood in ‘special education.’ I wasn’t considered college material,” Wild explained. As a child, he relied on books on tape, resources often intended for the visually impaired, just to keep up with reading assignments. “I used books on tape meant for the blind, ashamed to tell anyone.”

For years, that experience shaped how he viewed himself as a learner. But Wild’s journey didn’t stop there. After overcoming significant personal challenges and entering recovery, he began to reframe how he viewed intelligence and learning. “I’ve now been in recovery for nearly six years, and I’ve learned that my challenge was never intelligence. It was how intelligence was measured.”

Today, Wild sees technology, and especially generative AI tools, as a turning point in making education more accessible and empowering for students who learn differently.

How David uses Speechify

David’s Introduction to Speechify

When Wild returned to academic life through the Wake Forest School of Professional Studies, he knew that he needed tools that supported the way he naturally processes information. Rather than viewing AI tools as shortcuts, he sees them as bridges that make learning more inclusive and personalized.

“I believe Generative AI should be seen not as a shortcut, but as a tool of inclusion, growth, and empowerment that helps students learn how they learn best.”

Wild began using Speechify from the very beginning of his program. “I have been using Speechify since the first day of class. I'm in my eighth class.”

Speechify immediately reminded him of the audio tools he relied on earlier in life, but with far more advanced capabilities. Instead of struggling to keep pace with dense academic readings, Wild could listen to course materials, absorb information through audio, and engage with content in a way that matched his strengths as an auditory learner. For him, tools like Speechify represent something larger than productivity; they represent accessibility.

How David Uses Speechify

Wild integrates Speechify into his coursework as a core part of his study routine. By converting reading materials into audio, he can process information through listening, which allows him to focus more on understanding ideas rather than simply decoding text.

He often listens to course readings, articles, and assignments while reviewing concepts and reflecting on the material. This auditory learning approach aligns with how his brain naturally processes information and allows him to stay engaged with the content.

Wild also tracks his listening speed as his comprehension and confidence have grown. When he first began using Speechify, he listened at a much slower pace. Over time, as he became more comfortable processing academic material through audio, his listening speed increased dramatically.

“When I started using Speechify, I was .9 words per minute; now most of the time I'm at 1.75–1.90. Crazy how that works!” he explained.

How Speechify Helps David

For WIld, Speechify has been more than a reading tool; it has been a catalyst for academic success and personal confidence. By allowing him to engage with material in a format that aligns with his learning style, the platform removes barriers that once made education feel inaccessible.

“Tools like ChatGPT, Speechify, Grammarly, and YouTube don’t make learning easier; they make it accessible. They give people like me, who think and process differently, a voice that finally matches how our minds work,” he said.

Speechify has also helped him stay focused on what truly matters in education: growth, curiosity, and critical thinking rather than rote memorization or rigid grading systems. “I love being resilient. I love learning. I love being challenged. But I’ve never loved being grouped into a grade. A grade measures performance; learning measures growth.”

Speechify Improved Academic Results

Wild’s experience using Speechify has translated directly into academic performance. Since starting his program at Wake Forest School of Professional Studies, he has consistently excelled in his coursework with the lowest grade he’s received being 97/100.

His success challenges the assumptions he faced growing up about what students with learning disabilities can achieve. “I was told I was an auditory learner, scored a 960 on my SATs, and yet tested with a 142 IQ. I’ve proven in my professional career that I can be successful. I am an expert, I am an innovator.”

David Wild credits not only the tools he uses but also the environment that supported him as a learner. “It was the good people at the Wake Forest School of Professional Studies who accepted me for who I am, not what I score.”

Conclusion

David Wild’s story highlights how technology like Speechify can transform education for students who learn differently. By converting written content into accessible audio, Speechify allows learners to engage with information in ways that align with their natural strengths.

For Wild, the impact goes beyond productivity or grades; it represents freedom from the stigma he once felt about how he learns. His experience demonstrates that when education becomes more accessible, students are empowered not just to succeed academically but to discover their true potential as thinkers, innovators, and lifelong learners.
