Erich Maria Remarque was born in 1898 and was drafted into the German army when he was just 18 years old. His experiences during World War I heavily influenced his approach to his famous novel, Im Westen nichts Neues.

Remarque began work on his most famous novel soon after returning from the war. At the same time, he worked as a sportswriter and even had a stint as a race car driver.

Unfortunately, Remarque couldn’t predict the rise of Adolf Hitler and the Nazis. In 1933, the Nazi party banned his books in Germany. Six years later, Remarque emigrated to the United States after spending several years in Switzerland.

Despite being naturalized as a U.S. citizen in 1947, Remarque returned to Switzerland when he married Paulette Goddard. Together, they stayed in the country until the author’s death.
