The Throne of Glass book young adult fantasy series is the author’s oldest and most popular series. Sarah J. Mass stated that she got the inspiration for the Throne of Glass book from Disney’s Cinderella. However, the series is anything but a fairy tale.

The protagonist is a young assassin named Celaena Sardothien, who lives in a corrupt kingdom ruled by the King of Adarlan. She gets caught for her crimes and serves her sentence in the salt mines of Endovier.

After a year, the Crown Prince Dorian offers her freedom under one condition: she needs to represent him in a to-death tournament. If she manages to defeat 23 opponents, she’ll serve as the King’s Champion for years and then be free forever. Celaena wins the tournament and eventually gains her freedom.

She forms unbreakable bonds with Chaol (the Captain of the Guard) and Dorian and embarks on many exciting but dangerous adventures on her way to save her people from tyranny. Celaena also learns shocking things about her past.

The Assassin’s Blade is the prequel to the series and consists of five novellas: The Assassin and the Pirate Lord, The Assassin and the Healer, The Assassin and the Desert, The Assassin and the Underworld, and The Assassin and the Empire.

The prequel contains more details about the characters and the plot, but you can skip it and read it later when you get into the series.
