Speechify is absolutely brilliant. Growing up with dyslexia this would have made a big difference. I’m so glad to have it today.

NVDA Screen Reader reviews

is freely and open source (GPL2) Supports Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Word, Excel and Outlook Express, and Mozilla Thunderbird. NVDA supports web content using JavaScript. For students testing the screenreaders, NVDA was considered to be the second best screen reader in terms of capability for Windows and a great selling point is its price-free. In testing, some students preferred NVDA while some preferred JAWS. Interestingly enough, NVDA was able to read some web content that JAWS did not but the reverse was sometimes true as well.

I have done my best to outline the major differences between NVDA on Windows and VoiceOver on the Mac. While both products are good, I personally lean in favor of NVDA. Microsoft Windows is by far the most popular system in the world, and NVDA is a great tool in the toolbox. Its open source nature is a major plus and means the innovation and ability to keep up with the ever increasing changes in Windows is almost certain. In contrast, Apple’s neglect has turned me personally away from the Mac. I do not recommend people invest in Macs anymore either, as it has been clear for many years that Apple’s focus is on iOS. While it’s sad these events have transpired, we must never forget or disrespect the work Apple has done. Apple is a pioneer in the realm of mainstream accessibility, and now everyone else including Microsoft is trying to catch up. This is a very good thing as it pushes the entire industry forward and ultimately means access for blind users is only getting better and better as the years march on.

NVDA was much easier to get up and running, and I can keep it on a USB drive so that if I have to use it, then I can just pull it out and have it work.

NextUp TextAloud 4 reviews

I've used TextAloud every day since ALS robbed me of speech, and use it with Dasher to communicate. It's been my link to those I love for eight years or more. TextAloud has kept me purposeful. Disability robs purpose from our life, but TextAloud greatly mitigated my loss by providing the capacity of verbal communication. I first got the software for Windows XP or 2000, and for every upgrade, the NextUp techs have been there for me. It's probably the only software I've used steadily and seamlessly through a half dozen operating systems. My hospice nurses and doctors marvel at my ability to dialogue with them. I tell you my world would be diminished without TextAloud. I can't express how grateful I am to its developers.

I am a very satisfied NextUp customer. I started using TextAloud for my college classes as I am not the best student in the world and could use the extra help. Getting PDF files of the books and reading along with the audio made it much easier to remember the material. I also used it for long articles, going over my resume, and for work manuals. It is one thing to try and read an extremely boring regulation, and another to let it play in the background and find the sections that are most important to you (and still know the rest at least a little). I also use TextAloud on a lot of materials I might have not even bothered to read. Like a friend who says 'you should read this' when I really don’t want to or have the time -- but with TextAloud I can listen as I drive in to work or when I am out to lunch. Purchasing TextAloud has been one of my better purchases in life. I know that seems a bit outlandish but I use more often than not. Many thanks from a happy customer!

I've used TextAloud for a number of years to help with my writing. I am, admittedly, a technology novice, but I know what I like, and TextAloud has been invaluable for editing, as it lets me hear missing words my brain supplies when I read -- as well as other things ears detect when eyes are on autopilot. I've often recommended your product and now I can also add kudos to your customer service.

Pros & cons

NVDA Screen Reader

Pros
Free and open-source
Lightweight yet packs a lot of useful features
Ability to use add ons that adds extra features or improves the accessibility of certain apps
Supports multiple synthesizers including Microsoft Speech API, Eloquence, and Vocalizer
Supports reading and interacting with math contents such as MathType in Microsoft Office applications like Word (requires Math Player to work)
Braille display support

Cons
Math Player is required to read and interact with math content as of this writing
NVDA can sometimes behave oddly, but usually, there are workarounds such as restarting NVDA or Windows
Both Eloquence and Vocalizer synthesizers cost money, but usually not very expensive (2,000-4,000 Thai baht for the main synthesizer drivers, but any additional voices for that synthesizer are free)

Pros
Our youngest son (8 years old) attends a school for children who are dyslexic
One of a variety of tools used at the school is TextAloud
The goal here is to have it assist the student when he or she needs a word pronounced or a portion of the text read to them
This software allows the student to work as independently as possible
Our 18 year old son is also dyslexic and is a college freshman
He also uses TextAloud in two ways
To assist him in reading textbooks and mp3 recordings of the textbooks so that he may listen to them at any time
He has an above average I.Q
but would never be able to keep up with all the reading a freshman does without your software
The Disabilities department at the school scans his textbooks and uses OCR software to turn the files into text
We then use TextAloud to do the rest
We expected him to have to struggle to keep up with History and English, but to our surprise he is excelling in those subjects
This would not have been possible without the aid of your software
Thanks Nextup!
I use this program with a reading disability
I convert documents to MP3 and play them on my iPod
This allows me to listen to business documents while I am on the go
I use TextAloud every day to help me read, e-mails, read online books and just checking my own documents to make sure they make sense.
