An old man recounts the story of a death he witnessed as a young boy working in the theater: His boss, Mr. Haliday, had married a pretty young lady from the theater, much to the chagrin of the other women working in the company. It was a marriage of convenience, but in the beginning they got along well enough. After a handsome younger man, Henry Mortimer, joins the theater company, Mrs. Haliday and Mortimer start up a romance that everyone but Mr. Haliday seem to notice. However, during a performance one night, something seems to go terrible wrong as a piece of equipment falls from the stage and kills Mortimer. Although it seems like a simple stage malfunction, the young theater boy notices something that the rest do not — a strange piece of metal that he found on stage immediately following the death of Mortimer that seems to say that Mr. Haliday wasn’t as clueless as everyone had thought about the actions of his wife and the handsome young actor.

A POWERFUL FULL CAST DRAMATIC MARATHON
“There is a reason why all things are as they are.”
Dracula author Bram Stoker was born on November 8, 1847 in Dublin. Stoker was bedridden with an unknown illness until he started school at the age of seven when he made a complete recovery. Of this time, Stoker wrote, “I was naturally thoughtful, and the leisure of long illness gave opportunity for many thoughts which were fruitful according to their kind in later years.” He was educated in a private school run by the Reverend William Woods.
Stoker visited the English coastal town of Whitby in 1890, and that visit was said to be part of the inspiration for Dracula. He began writing novels while working as the manager for London’s Lyceum Theatre, beginning with The Snake’s Pass in 1890 and Dracula in 1897. Stoker was part of the literary staff of The Daily Telegraph in London, and he wrote other fiction, including the horror novels The Lady of the Shroud (1909) and The Lair of the White Worm (1911).
Dracula is an epistolary novel, written as a collection of realistic but completely fictional diary entries, telegrams, letters, ship’s logs, and newspaper clippings, all of which added a level of detailed realism to the story, a skill which Stoker had developed as a newspaper writer. At the time of its publication, Dracula was considered a “straightforward horror novel” based on imaginary creations of supernatural life. “It gave form to a universal fantasy and became a part of popular culture.
The original 541-page typescript of Dracula was believed to have been lost until it was found in a barn in northwestern Pennsylvania in the early 1980s. It consisted of typed sheets with many emendations and handwritten on the title page was “THE UN-DEAD.” The author’s name was shown at the bottom as Bram Stoker. Author Robert Latham remarked: “the most famous horror novel ever published, its title changed at the last minute.”

Bram Stoker was an Irish author and Dracula is his most famous book. Dracula was published in 1897. It was not the first vampire novel. For example, it draws on Carmilla by Sheridan Le Fanu, who at one time was Stoker’s employer in Dublin. But Dracula is without doubt the most famous vampire novel. It is narrated here by Tony Walker, producer and narrator of The Classic Ghost Stories Podcast.

Of the many admiring reviews Bram Stoker’s Dracula received when it first appeared in 1897, the most astute praise came from the author’s mother, who wrote her son: “It is splendid. No book since Mrs. Shelley’s Frankenstein or indeed any other at all has come near yours in originality, or terror.”
A popular bestseller in Victorian England, Stoker’s hypnotic tale of the bloodthirsty Count Dracula, whose nocturnal atrocities are symbolic of an evil ages old yet forever new, endures as the quintessential story of suspense and horror. The unbridled lusts and desires, the diabolical cravings that Stoker dramatized with such mythical force, render Dracula resonant and unsettling a century later.

Told in journal fragments that cannot provide any single perspective, Bram Stoker’s masterpiece is at the same time intensely romantic and very modern. It unfolds the story of a Transylvanian Don Juan, the aristocratic vampire Count Dracula who preys on damsels, and the mission launched from a lunatic asylum to destroy him.

This blood-curdling tale of thirsty vampires continues to hold audiences spellbound more than a century after its publication.
Summoned to assist with legal matters regarding a real estate transaction, young Englishman Jonathan Harker journeys to the dismal, dreary castle of Count Dracula in Transylvania. The fledgling solicitor is completely unprepared for what he will discover in the days to come–and the horrifying chain of events sparked by his unsettling stay with the mysterious Count.
The Dracula mythology has inspired a vast subculture, but the story has never been better told than by Bram Stoker. He succeeds entirely in his aim to terrify. His myth is powerful because it allows evil to remain mysterious, unconquerable by strength of mind or virtuous action.
Van Helsing’s high-thinking and scientific skill cannot resist the dreadful potency of the undead. The high virtue of Lucy can simply be drained away, as her blood is drained away, until she too joins the vampire brood. Only the old magic–a crucifix, garlic, a wooden stake–can provide effective weapons against the Count’s appalling power.

Dracula, a Gothic novel by Bram Stoker, published in 1897, is derived from old vampire legends and is the basis for an entire genre of literature and film. Dracula, the archetypal vampire, is depicted in the novel as having been the origin of the many werewolf legends. The willowy count is believed to have been inspired by the 15th-century Vlad the Impaler, and by Sir Henry Irving, an actor for whom Stoker was a personal assistant. One of Dracula’s most iconic powers is his ability to turn others into vampires by biting them and thus infecting them with the vampiric disease.
Stoker’s novel takes the form of an epistolary tale, in which Count Dracula’s characteristics, powers are narrated by multiple narrators. Count Dracula is an undead, centuries-old vampire, and Transylvanian nobleman descended from Attila the Hun. He inhabits a decaying castle in the Carpathian Mountains near the Borgo Pass. Dracula is devilishly handsome and charismatic, with a veneer of dark aristocratic charm.
Likewise, he possesses supernatural abilities gained through his intimate dealings with the Devil. Dracula does not cast a shadow or reflect in mirrors. He can defy gravity and possesses superhuman agility, able to climb vertical surfaces upside down. In the novel he also has great hypnotic, telepathic and illusionary powers. This is the rare, long lost original 1897 manuscript – published here for the first time.

Dracula is the now classic 1897 Gothic horror novel by Irish author Bram Stoker. It introduced the fearsome Count Dracula, and established many conventions of subsequent vampire fantasies. The novel tells the story of Dracula’s attempt to move from Transylvania to England so that he may find new blood and spread the undead curse, and of the battle between Dracula and a small group of men and a woman led by Professor Abraham Van Helsing.

Dracula’s Guest is believed to be the deleted first chapter of Stoker’s masterpiece, Dracula, removed because the publisher felt the chapter was unnecessary due to the length of the manuscript. In the preface to the 1914 short story collection Dracula’s Guest And Other Weird Stories, Stoker’s widow, Florence Bram Stoker, notes “To his original list of stories in this book, I have added an hitherto unpublished episode from Dracula. It was originally excised owing to the length of the book, and may prove of interest to the many readers of what is considered my husband’s most remarkable work.” Despite the widow Stoker’s prefaced note and supporting evidence, some Stoker scholars, including Elizabeth Miller, do not believe that the story was indeed the deleted chapter. Dracula’s Guest tells the story of an unnamed Englishman visiting Munich before departing for Transylvania. Ignoring the warning of his hotelier to return early, the Englishman ventures out to explore an abandoned village. In this village, during a raging storm, he encounters several otherworldly beings and is unsure of the exact events of the night.

Best known for his masterpiece of horror, Dracula, Bram Stoker wrote a number of other novels and many short stories, all with supernatural themes or filled with a physical terror reminiscent of Poe. The title story, “Dracula’s Guest,” was originally part of the great novel but was excised and published separately. The accompanying stories, such as “The Squaw,” “The Judge’s House,” and “The Burial of the Rats,” are classic tales of the macabre in their own right. From torture chambers and murderous prophecies to vengeful ghosts, these haunting stories illuminate Stoker’s mastery of horror.

Known as an actor-manager, Sir Henry Irving (1838-1905) took complete responsibility for season after season at London’s Lyceum Theatre, establishing himself and his company as representative of English classical theater. Beginning in 1878, author Bram Stoker worked for Irving as a business manager at the Lyceum for much of Irving’s career. Stoker revered Irving, and when he began writing Dracula, Irving was the chief inspiration for the title character.
In this fascinating journey, Stoker describes wonderful visits in the company of Irving with the likes of Alfred Lord Tennyson, Walt Whitman, and other worthy notables. Stoker’s description of how Irving changed the way actors and acting companies rehearsed and presented plays is fascinating.
Personal Reminiscences of Henry Irving is an extraordinary look at an artist’s life during the latter half of the nineteenth century and the trials and tribulations of working in the theater during that period. Bram Stoker loved the theater, and he loved Henry Irving–and that friendship is written all over the pages of this book.

Powers of Darkness is an incredible literary discovery: In 1900, Icelandic publisher and writer Valdimar Asmundsson set out to translate Bram Stoker’s world-famous 1897 novel Dracula. Called Makt Myrkranna (literally, “Powers of Darkness”), this Icelandic edition included an original preface written by Stoker himself. Makt Myrkranna was published in Iceland in 1901 but remained undiscovered outside of the country until 1986, when Dracula scholarship was astonished by the discovery of Stoker’s preface to the book. However, no one looked beyond the preface and deeper into Asmundsson’s story.
In 2014, literary researcher Hans de Roos dove into the full text of Makt Myrkranna, only to discover that Asmundsson hadn’t merely translated Dracula but had penned an entirely new version of the story, with all new characters and a totally reworked plot. The resulting narrative is one that is shorter, punchier, more erotic, and perhaps even more suspenseful than Stoker’s Dracula. Incredibly, Makt Myrkranna has never been translated or even read outside of Iceland until now.
Powers of Darkness presents the first ever translation into English of Stoker and Asmundsson’s Makt Myrkranna. With a foreword by Dacre Stoker, Bram Stoker’s great-grandnephew and bestselling author, and an afterword by Dracula scholar John Edgar Browning, Powers of Darkness will amaze and entertain legions of fans of Gothic literature, horror, and vampire fiction.

The Low Comedian goes next, telling of how he is always expected to bring a laugh, even in the direst of situations. Next up is the Prompter, telling a tale of a great flood. The Second Low Comedian follows up sharing stories of confessions he heard on another troubled train. The Young Man picks up the next story involving one of the characters the Second Low Comedian encountered on the other train. The Second Heavies then promises a story about another baby – but this one alive, not dead. The Singing Chambermaid is on next, recounting an anecdote from the start of her career. The Tragedian continues on with a story about his “hot youth.” The Super Master goes next with a story involving some chaos in the children’s theatre. The Advance Agent relates the tale of an actor he used to deal with and his shady background. The Master Machinist tells the story of a faulty star trap and the dangerous results. The Scene Painter goes next with a calm story from his past to help soothe the company after the star trap story. By the time the company is done telling their tales, the train is able to continue on through the storm.
