Dracula author Bram Stoker was born on November 8, 1847 in Dublin. Stoker was bedridden with an unknown illness until he started school at the age of seven when he made a complete recovery. Of this time, Stoker wrote, “I was naturally thoughtful, and the leisure of long illness gave opportunity for many thoughts which were fruitful according to their kind in later years.” He was educated in a private school run by the Reverend William Woods.
Stoker visited the English coastal town of Whitby in 1890, and that visit was said to be part of the inspiration for Dracula. He began writing novels while working as the manager for London’s Lyceum Theatre, beginning with The Snake’s Pass in 1890 and Dracula in 1897. Stoker was part of the literary staff of The Daily Telegraph in London, and he wrote other fiction, including the horror novels The Lady of the Shroud (1909) and The Lair of the White Worm (1911).
Dracula is an epistolary novel, written as a collection of realistic but completely fictional diary entries, telegrams, letters, ship’s logs, and newspaper clippings, all of which added a level of detailed realism to the story, a skill which Stoker had developed as a newspaper writer. At the time of its publication, Dracula was considered a “straightforward horror novel” based on imaginary creations of supernatural life. “It gave form to a universal fantasy and became a part of popular culture.
The original 541-page typescript of Dracula was believed to have been lost until it was found in a barn in northwestern Pennsylvania in the early 1980s. It consisted of typed sheets with many emendations and handwritten on the title page was “THE UN-DEAD.” The author’s name was shown at the bottom as Bram Stoker. Author Robert Latham remarked: “the most famous horror novel ever published, its title changed at the last minute.”

Bram Stoker was an Irish author and Dracula is his most famous book. Dracula was published in 1897. It was not the first vampire novel. For example, it draws on Carmilla by Sheridan Le Fanu, who at one time was Stoker’s employer in Dublin. But Dracula is without doubt the most famous vampire novel. Dracula’s Guest is believed to be the deleted first chapter of Stoker’s masterpiece, Dracula, removed because the publisher felt the chapter was unnecessary due to the length of the manuscript. In the preface to the 1914 short story collection Dracula’s Guest And Other Weird Stories, Stoker’s widow, Florence Bram Stoker, notes “To his original list of stories in this book, I have added an hitherto unpublished episode from Dracula. It was originally excised owing to the length of the book, and may prove of interest to the many readers of what is considered my husband’s most remarkable work.” Despite the widow Stoker’s prefaced note and supporting evidence, some Stoker scholars, including Elizabeth Miller, do not believe that the story was indeed the deleted chapter. Dracula’s Guest tells the story of an unnamed Englishman visiting Munich before departing for Transylvania. Ignoring the warning of his hotelier to return early, the Englishman ventures out to explore an abandoned village. In this village, during a raging storm, he encounters several otherworldly beings and is unsure of the exact events of the night.

Published two years after Bram Stoker’s death, this collection of short stories from the famed author contains nine pieces filled with horrors and thrills. Filled with haunting rats, inexplicable tension, and an appearance from Dracula himself, Stoker’s short stories uphold his reputation from his previous works and allow new audiences to re-discover the master of horror. This collection includes “Dracula’s Guest,” “The Judge’s House,” “The Gipsy Prophecy,” “The Coming of Abel Behenna,” “The Burial of the Rats,” “A Dream of Red Hands,” “Crooken Sands,” and “The Secret of the Growing Gold.”

Best known for his masterpiece of horror, Dracula, Bram Stoker wrote a number of other novels and many short stories, all with supernatural themes or filled with a physical terror reminiscent of Poe. The title story, “Dracula’s Guest,” was originally part of the great novel but was excised and published separately. Known as an actor-manager, Sir Henry Irving (1838-1905) took complete responsibility for season after season at London’s Lyceum Theatre, establishing himself and his company as representative of English classical theater. Stoker revered Irving, and when he began writing Dracula, Irving was the chief inspiration for the title character.

Powers of Darkness is an incredible literary discovery: In 1900, Icelandic publisher and writer Valdimar Asmundsson set out to translate Bram Stoker’s world-famous 1897 novel Dracula. Called Makt Myrkranna (literally, “Powers of Darkness”), this Icelandic edition included an original preface written by Stoker himself. Makt Myrkranna was published in Iceland in 1901 but remained undiscovered outside of the country until 1986, when Dracula scholarship was astonished by the discovery of Stoker’s preface to the book. However, no one looked beyond the preface and deeper into Asmundsson’s story.

In 2014, literary researcher Hans de Roos dove into the full text of Makt Myrkranna, only to discover that Asmundsson hadn’t merely translated Dracula but had penned an entirely new version of the story, with all new characters and a totally reworked plot. The resulting narrative is one that is shorter, punchier, more erotic, and perhaps even more suspenseful than Stoker’s Dracula. Incredibly, Makt Myrkranna has never been translated or even read outside of Iceland until now.

Snowbound: A company of traveling actors gets snowbound during a storm while venturing to their next locale. In order to pass the time, the actors share stories with each other. The Manager begins with one about the time he spent in an unsavory saloon before his time with the company. Next the Leading Lady shares a story about a certain play she worked on. Two friends lived in the houses surrounding the Bubbs, Harry and Tommy, but they were forbidden to see each other because of the trouble they caused. Harry and Tommy began to secretly meet in the Bubb’s garden, bringing with them their knives and items to destroy with the knives. Soon, items are not enough for the boys and they begin dueling, then killing animals. But their thirst could not be quenched. Things eventually take a very dark turn and Harry and Tommy must be stopped.
