“There’s a scarlet thread of murder running through the colorless skein of life, and our duty is to unravel it, and isolate it, and expose every inch of it.”
From the moment Dr. John Watson takes lodgings in Baker Street with the consulting detective Sherlock Holmes, he becomes intimately acquainted with the bloody violence and frightening ingenuity of the criminal mind.
In A Study in Scarlet, Holmes and Watson’s first mystery, the pair are summoned to a south London house where they find a dead man whose face is a twisted mask of horror. The body is unmarked by violence, but on the wall a mysterious word has been written in blood.
The police are baffled by the crime and its circumstances. But when Sherlock Holmes applies his brilliantly logical mind to the problem, he uncovers a tragic tale of love and deadly revenge.

Two American travelers have been killed–one with poison, the other with a knife through the heart–and the only clues at the scene are a woman’s wedding ring and the German word for “vengeance” written in blood. The military surgeon Dr. John Watson is brought in to investigate, along with his clever, arrogant new roommate, Sherlock Holmes. Thus begins one of the most famous crime-solving partnerships of all time and the debut of one of literature’s most remarkable detectives.
Doyle borrowed his major elements–the detective of superhuman intellect; cases as fantastical as they are criminal; the final, dramatic resolution–from the works of Edgar Allan Poe, adding his own distinctive touches: a strong feeling for the atmosphere of late Victorian London, an interest in the methods of science, and a chivalric concern for justice and the oppressed.

A body on the London Underground; the strange disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax; a parcel containing some coarse salt and two freshly severed human ears. This collection of eight world-famous cases from Doctor Watson’s portfolio illustrates the singular mental faculties of Sherlock Holmes. In the course of his investigations, Holmes himself is struck down by a virulent Eastern disease, and we are reintroduced to his remarkable brother Mycroft: “all other men are specialists, but his specialism is omniscience.” Finally, with the approach of the German War, Holmes emerges from retirement among his books and bees on the South Downs to lay his unique intellect at the disposal of the British Government, with the historic results disclosed in “His Last Bow.”

Altogether, Arthur Conan Doyle wrote four novels and fifty-six short stories about Sherlock Holmes. Throughout, Dr. Watson (or just Watson) was included as a catalyst for Holmes’s massive ego and mental processes. Eventually, Doyle felt the stories were distracting him from more serious literary work, but he did finally wind it up with the seven stories you’re about to hear. In the words of Watson (Dr. John H. Watson, MD), we have the pleasure of knowing about the declining years, beginning now.
The friends of Mr. Sherlock Holmes will be glad to learn that he is still alive and well, though somewhat crippled by occasional attacks of rheumatism. He has, for many years, lived in a small farm upon the Downs five miles from Eastbourne, where his time is divided between philosophy and agriculture. During this period of rest he has refused the most princely offers to take up various cases, having determined that his retirement was a permanent one. The approach of the German war caused him, however, to lay his remarkable combination of intellectual and practical activity at the disposal of the Government, with historical results which are recounted in His Last Bow. Several previous experiences which have lain long in my portfolio have been added to His Last Bow so as to complete the volume.

- By: Arthur Conan Doyle
- Narrator: Stefan Rudnicki
- Length: 6 hours 29 minutes
- Publisher: Blackstone Publishing
- Publish date: January 01, 2022
- Language: English
In this original pairing from Blackstone Publishing and Skyboat Media, two of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s lesser-known works, Maracot Deep and The Coming of the Fairies, are brought together for the first time. Doyle’s forays into science fiction and spiritualism prove just as engaging and imaginative as the mysteries for which he is best known.
Originally serialized in the Saturday Evening Post in 1927, Maracot Deep is a tale of discovery that voyages all the way down to the deepest part of the ocean. The eccentric Professor Maracot leads an expedition team consisting of Bill Scanlan, a gruff American mechanic; and Cyrus Headley, a young zoologist, to an area he hopes will come to be known as “The Maracot Deep.” On their way to the ocean floor, they are attacked by a monstrous creature from the deep sea but are rescued by none other than the citizens of the lost city of Atlantis. With wild and richly detailed descriptions of both the underwater majesty of their journey and the speculative science that helped get them there, this science fiction adventure tale is among Doyle’s most creative works.
In The Coming of the Fairies, Doyle tells the story of the real-life hoax of the Cottingley Fairies. In 1917, the Cottingley Fairies appeared in a series of five photographs taken by the young cousins Elsie Wright and Frances Griffiths, who presented them to the world as proof of the existence of fairies. A spiritualist, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote The Coming of the Fairies for the 1920 Christmas edition of The Strand. Doyle himself was completely convinced of the authenticity of these photographs and used this work to lay out the evidence for his belief, though he did not write it to persuade anyone to his side, rather as “simply a collection of facts the inferences from which may be accepted or rejected as the reader may think fit.” Though Elsie later confessed and confirmed the photographs were a hoax, Frances maintained that the fifth photograph was in fact genuine.
The audiobook includes a bonus PDF containing reproductions of the famous Cottingley photographs featured in The Coming of the Fairies.

“I have had a life which, for variety and romance, could, I think, hardly be exceeded. I have known what it was to be a poor man and I have known what it was to be fairly affluent. I have sampled every kind of human experience. I have known many of the most remarkable men of my time. I have had a long literary career after a medical training which gave me the MD of Edinburgh…I have traveled as Doctor to a whaler for seven months in the Arctic and afterwards in the West Coast of Africa. I have seen something of three wars: the Sudanese, the South African and the German. My life has been dotted with adventures of all kinds. Finally, I have been constrained to devote my latter years to telling the world the final result of thirty-six years’ study of the occult…Such is the life which I have told in some detail in my Memories and Adventures.”–Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

His Last Bow: Some Reminiscences of Sherlock Holmes is a collection of previously published Sherlock Holmes stories by Arthur Conan Doyle, including the titular short story, “His Last Bow. The War Service of Sherlock Holmes” (1917). The collection’s first US edition adjusts the anthology’s subtitle to Some Later Reminiscences of Sherlock Holmes. All editions contain a brief preface, by “John H. Watson, M.D.”, that assures readers that as of the date of publication (1917), Holmes is long retired from his profession of detective but is still alive and well, albeit suffering from a touch of rheumatism.

Blackstone is pleased to present the first ever audio recordings of the only two Holmes plays written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This specially commissioned production by the Hollywood Theater of the Ear is a unique, must-have audio for all Sherlockians.
In Sherlock Holmes, Professor Moriarity, the Napoleon of crime, plots with would-be blackmailers to have Holmes killed. And the normally love-proof Holmes falls for an exceptional woman.
What is the secret of the shocking death of poor Enid’s sister, whose dying words were, “the speckled band”? Only Holmes can find the answer and save a helpless girl from certain death in The Speckled Band.
When Holmes retired, it created a financial crisis for his friend Watson, who owes money to mobsters who want either their cash or his blood. The surprising upshot is: Ghastly Double Murder in Famed Detective’s Flat, a one-act comedy by producer-director Yuri Rasovsky, here receiving its audiobook premiere.

Tales for a Winter’s Night brings together eight Arthur Conan Doyle mystery classics that originally appeared in the Strand between July 1898 and January 1899. When first gathered into one volume in 1908, the book was entitled Round the Fire Stories, since the author recommended that they be read ideally “round the fire” upon a winter’s night.
According to Barzun and Taylor in A Catalogue of Crime, “As one reads ‘The Man with the Watches,’ ‘The Lost Special,’ ‘The Jew’s Breastplate,’ ‘The Black Doctor,’ and the rest, one marvels again at Doyle’s natural gift of storytelling…The stories are worth reading even around a radiator.” Other stories include “The Club-Footed Grocer,” “The Sealed Room,” “The Brazilian Cat,” and “B.24.”

This volume presents some of Arthur Conan Doyle’s unduly neglected masterworks of suspense. Each begins in a quietly factual way, which makes all the more dramatic the crescendo of fear and puzzlement that ensues as each startling new circumstance is revealed. Even without his supremely logical brainchild Sherlock Holmes, Conan Doyle shows that his tales are unbeatable for thrills and excitement. This is a great opportunity for the listener to discover a new facet of the master’s ability to mystify and enthrall.
Included in this collection are six tales of terror:
“The Horror of the Heights”“The Leather Funnel”“The New Catacomb”“The Case of Lady Sannox”“The Terror of Blue John Gap”“The Brazilian Cat”
And seven tales of mystery:
“The Lost Special”“The Beetle-Hunter”“The Man with the Watches”“The Japanned Box”“The Black Doctor”“The Jew’s Breastplate”“The Nightmare Room”

The description “consulting detective” was often a reference to Sherlock Holmes, but that was inadequate to tell about his unusual characteristics. He was a loner who preferred to keep to himself and kept many secrets from others, including the few friends he had. Holmes did have a constant professional relationship with Dr. Watson, and it was the faithful Watson who once said, “I had no idea that such personalities exist outside of stories.”
The two followed trails of a wide range of criminals throughout London, southern England, and continental Europe with solutions based on the Holmes intuition as often as not. Join us for the beginning of a series of fascinating stories about a fascinating character.

It was a perfect day, with a bright sun and a few fleecy clouds in the heavens. What you’re about to hear takes place in West Inch, a city on the English-Scottish border. The title is an unusual reference to a shadow forming over the city that’s said to be about the influence and reputation of the infamous Napoleon.
This is all a change of literary output by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, famed for his stories about Sherlock Holmes. He had gotten a little tired of that character and turned, at least for a while, to a man named Jock Calder, who was one of the soldiers at the scene of military activity, including the battle of Waterloo.
The Great Shadow tale here was first published in 1892. Listen to find out what happened.

This is a new edition of Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic mystery, The Hound of the Baskervilles. It’s the same story. Mostly. That is, it contains the same characters, the same action, and much of the same dialogue.
What’s different? Well, it’s a little shorter, a little leaner, a little less verbose in some sections. But the chief difference is that it’s now narrated by a dog. A greyhound, in fact, named Septimus. In this new edition, he tells his story of how he became “The Greyhound of the Baskervilles.”

At Baskerville Hall on the grim moors of Devonshire, a legendary curse has apparently claimed one more victim. Sir Charles Baskerville has been found dead. There are no signs of violence, but his face is hideously distorted with terror. Years earlier, a hound-like beast with blazing eyes and dripping jaws was reported to have torn out the throat of Hugo Baskerville. Has the spectral destroyer struck again? More important, is Sir Henry Baskerville, younger heir to the estate, now in danger? Enter Sherlock Holmes, summoned to protect Sir Henry from the fate that has threatened the Baskerville family. As Holmes and Watson begin to investigate, a blood-chilling howl from the fog-shrouded edges of the great Grimpen Mire signals that the legendary hound of the Baskervilles is poised for yet another murderous attack. The Hound of the Baskerville first appeared as a serial in The Strand Magazine in 1901. By the time of its publication in book form eight months later, this brilliantly plotted, richly atmospheric detective story had already achieved the status of a classic. It has often been called he best detective story ever written. It remains a thrilling tale of suspense, must reading for every lover of detective fiction.

The Hound of the Baskervilles is the third of the four crime novels written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle featuring the detective Sherlock Holmes. Originally serialised in The Strand Magazine from August 1901 to April 1902, it is set largely on Dartmoor in Devon in England’s West Country.
Arguably the most well known of the Sherlock Holmes mysteries, The Hound of the Baskervilles pits the Detective against a cold and implacable foe on the inhospitable and lethal moor. He must protect the life of his client; Sir Henry Baskerville and also to uncover the truth behind the strange and inexplicable death of Sir Henry’s predecessor and uncle.
Is there really a mythical hound hunting down members of the family as the ancient legends suggest? Or is the intelligence arrayed against Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson of flesh and blood?
Narrated by Michael Ward.

“Dr. Mortimer looked strangely at us for an instant and his voice sank almost to a whisper as he answered, “Mr. Holmes, they were the footprints of a gigantic hound.”
The “luminous, ghostly, and spectral” hound of family legend has been seen roaming the moors at night. Sir Charles Baskerville has recently died, and it appears that the new baronet, Sir Henry, has inherited not only the vast wealth and property of his family but also a terrible destiny. To this Holmes ominously observes, “It’s an ugly business, Watson, an ugly dangerous business and the more I see of it the less I like it.”

The Hound of the Baskervilles is the third of the four crime novels by British writer Arthur Conan Doyle featuring the detective Sherlock Holmes. Originally serialized in The Strand magazine from August 1901 to April 1902, it is set largely on Dartmoor in Devon in England’s West Country and tells the story of an attempted murder inspired by the legend of a fearsome, diabolical hound of supernatural origin. Holmes and Watson investigate the case.
This was the first appearance of Holmes since his apparent death in The Final Problem, and the success of The Hound of the Baskervilles led to the character’s eventual revival. Not only was it the first Sherlock Holmes story to be released in the twentieth century, it was the first story that seemingly endeavored into the world of the supernatural which would challenge Holmes’s idea of rational existence.

Before Jurassic Park, there was The Lost World.
This classic terror-adventure novel has set the standard for today’s popular entertainment as followed by Michael Crichton and Steven Spielberg. Featuring the bold Professor Challenger, a character many critics consider one of the most finely drawn in science fiction, The Lost World is the account of a scientific expedition by four high-spirited Englishmen—two scientists, a big-game hunter, and a journalist—deep into the Amazon jungle. In this region, cut off from the outside world by unscalable vertical cliffs and fetid swamps, they encounter a world where dinosaurs roam free and natives fight a murderous war with their fierce neighbors, the ape-men. Trapped on the isolated plateau with only hunting rifles as protection, the four must use savvy and intellect to escape from this primeval terror.

This story offers a rare opportunity to feel as though you’re actually taking part in an awesome expedition to an Amazonian plateau where there are still some surviving prehistoric animals. It’s a rarity labeled science fiction, and it is at least relatively scientific. As for the fiction part, who knows?
A young reporter, Edward “Eddie” Malone wants to impress a female inamorata looking for a great man capable of brave deeds and actions, so he asks for a dangerous assignment that leads to the South American derring-dos he hopes will attract her attention.
Conan Doyle had written a half dozen stories about Sherlock Holmes, beginning in 1887 before this book was published in 1912. He wanted a change and once wrote his mother, “I think of slaying Holmes and winding him up for good and all. He takes my mind from other things.” In this particular story, details are given by an impersonal historical narrator, with Doyle using him to provide at least a sense of credibility.
We won’t tell you the results of the reporter’s love affair. You’ll just have to listen to find out.

A subtitle of this book is “The Lost World Under the Sea,” and it’s somewhat based on the famed legend of Atlantis. That was an ancient city or continent that was supposedly inundated by the sea. Whether it actually existed has been a question that has lasted for thousands of years. Greek philosopher Plato wrote about it around 360 BC, so even his possible information was second-hand. Tsunamis (sea storms) have existed for centuries and if there really was an Atlantis, any survivors may have fled inland and built new cities.
In any event, this story was written by Arthur Conan Doyle as he took a break from his tales about fictional detective Sherlock Holmes. He did that for the simple reason he would get tired of the Holmes literature and would do something different for his own peace of mind. This is one of the results, so listen now to some attention-getting mystery fiction.

These delightful stories of the famous hawkeyed detective are told by his friend and foil, Dr. Watson. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle draws us into nineteenth-century London–hansom cabs, train rides, and foggy nights–where Holmes astutely solves the most complex and perplexing cases of the day. Among the short stories included in this collection is “The Gloria Scott,” an account of Holmes’ very first case, and”The Greek Interpreter,” in which we finally meet Holmes’ intellectual brother, Mycroft.
The various adventures in The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes are overshadowed by the event with which they close–the meeting of the great detective and Moriarty, the Napoleon of Crime. That struggle, seemingly to the death, was to leave many readers desolate at the loss of Holmes but was also to lead to his immortality as a literary figure.
Other stories include”Silver Blaze,””The Yellow Face,” “The Stockbroker’s Clerk,” “The Musgrave Ritual,” “The Reigate Puzzle,” “The Crooked Man,” “The Resident Patient,” “The Naval Treaty,” and “The Final Problem.”

The one and only Sherlock Holmes is back from the dead and devoting his life once more to examining the criminal complexities of England’s capital city.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote of many dreadful murders, but the one which astonished and distressed readers the most was when the author, anxious to try something new, killed off Sherlock Holmes. Trapped in mortal combat with the dastardly Professor Moriarty, Holmes and his opponent plunged to their deaths in the Reichenbach Falls. For ten long years, Baker Street was without its most revered resident. Then, in 1903, Doyle took pity on his readers and brought the sagacious sleuth back to life. The thirteen stories included in this masterful book tell of his return. Cases of mysterious codes, persecuted millionaires, stalkers, abductions, and a meeting with “the worst man in London” are all tackled with renewed vigor. But Holmes’ old enemies are watching his every move.

“By the table, in a wooden arm-chair, the master of the house was seated all in a heap, with his head sunk upon his left shoulder, and that ghastly, inscrutable smile upon his face. He was stiff and cold, and had clearly been dead many hours. It seemed to me that not only his features but all his limbs were twisted and turned in the most fantastic fashion. By his hand upon the table there lay a peculiar instrument,—a brown, close-grained stick, with a stone head like a hammer, rudely lashed on with coarse twine. Beside it was a torn sheet of note-paper with some words scrawled upon it. Holmes glanced at it, and then handed it to me.
“You see,” he said, with a significant raising of the eyebrows.
In the light of the lantern I read, with a thrill of horror, “The sign of the four.”
“In God’s name, what does it all mean?” I asked.
“It means murder,” said he, stooping over the dead man.”
Published in 1890 in Lippincott’s Monthly Magazine, the Sign of the Four or The Problem of the Sholtos is the second of the Sherlock Holmes stories penned by Arthur Conan Doyle. Presenting Sherlock and Watson with a case of a mysterious murder in a seemingly locked room, with the theft of over half a million pounds in jewels seemingly as the motive. Can even Sherlock Holmes track down the criminals before they escape the country?

European tourists travel languidly along the Nile River to Abousir, at the southern frontier of Egypt, aboard “a turtle-bottomed, round-bowed stern-wheeler,” the Korosko. But Dervish warriors threaten danger and then attack and kidnap the tourists.
In this novel, Doyle explores themes of British Imperialism and a defensive European perspective on North Africa; racial paternalism; and debates on interference with other countries’ politics and religions. This wonderful novel was first published in 1898, long before Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile.

When a strange coded message arrives at 221B Baker Street, sent by a member of Professor Moriarty’s criminal organization, Sherlock Holmes soon deciphers it and finds a warning: someone is about to be murdered. A visit from a Scotland Yard inspector confirms that one John Douglas has been mysteriously killed in Sussex. Even Sherlock Holmes, well accustomed to the bizarre, finds the elements of this case unusual. John Douglas lived at Birlstone Manor House, built on the ruins of a castle surrounded by a moat. Every night he drew up the bridge as a precaution against potential villains. Nevertheless, Douglas was found dead, shot in the face at close range with a sawed-off shotgun. And the bereaved are strangely dry-eyed.
The mystery spans the Atlantic, from Sussex and the foggy streets of London to a coal-mining region in Pennsylvania, and the ultimate twist can only be untangled by the incomparable skill of the legendary Holmes.
