Rick Boski and Goose Gordon are small-time crims who met twenty years ago in jail in Perth, Western Australia (in the Dave Warner novel Exxxpresso). After serving his time Rick fulfilled his dream to open a prison-themed cafe (Cafe Inside) and has been extremely successful over the intervening period. Goose has done well working for mining companies and both have been on the straight and narrow. But now there are two flies in the ointment: former jailbirds Taco Bill and Pineapple Pete who have NOT gone on the straight and narrow, and who are demanding Goose uses his knowledge of alarms to help them heist an expensive oil painting from a private home. Declining is not an option, so Goose turns to Rick for help. Rick comes up with a solution. They will get a fake painting done that looks just like the painting that is going to be stolen. They will then steal the real painting first, replace it with a fake painting that Taco Bill and Pineapple Pete can happily head off with. Then they will replace the real painting and nobody will be any the wiser. It sounds like a simple plan but a love-sick artist and a vicious guard dog lead to a very smeared palate.

What would happen if an ordinary church-going mother found suddenly that she had miraculous healing powers? How would she and her family adapt to the change? What would society’s attitude be to her? And what if the powers she possessed came at a cost, to her own family? These are the questions raised in my audio short-story Charity. This is not a big R religious story but it is a spiritual one. While I wrote it long before Covid became a reality it seems that the questions raised go to the heart of what is happening today. Where do the responsibilities of healers and carers to the general public end when their own well-being is at risk? Normally I write crime fiction that has somewhere at its core moral and ethical dilemmas. This is a departure from that. With Christmas approaching it seemed an apt time to release Charity and celebrate the courage of those among us who risk everything for the betterment of others.

A mix of narrative, music, poems, reflections and historic interviews narrated by me about all the influences that led to the ultimate recording of my 1978 album Mugs Game.
I grew up in the 1960s in Perth, Western Australia, the most isolated city in the world, yet harboured the dream of playing rock music like the Who, or the Beatles or the Doors. Garage bands progressed to songs: some introspective about my life as an adolescent in a sea of Laminex, some angry, satirical rock inspired by Frank Zappa and the Fugs. In the late 1960s original Australian music was almost unheard of. What there was tended to be a faithful recreation of American or English pop music, and nobody sang in an Australian accent. I knew that the most powerful art, including rock music, needed veracity and that presented me with an awful dilemma: if I was to write truly original, powerful songs, I would have to make them about my boring, unfashionable, Australian middle-class life. In 1972 I formed probably Australia’s first punk band Pus. After a stint in London I refined the concept of my music into what I called `suburban rock.’ This culminated in Mugs Game (Mushroom). It went gold in three months but its genesis was way back in 1963 and it evolved steadily along the way as my life was influenced by friends, fellow musicians and constant romantic rejection.
This 4.5 hour long audio-book is the story of my life from 1963-78 told with assistance of 57 songs and poems, including all Mugs Game tracks in full plus earlier demos, and other songs of that time never before recorded.
My life-long friends and fellow Suburbs Tony Durant and John Dennison talk about the early days and the evolution of the band and Mugs Game.
In some ways, I think my story is the story of every musician who went on to form a band and write and record an album. But it is of course, uniquely mine too – the Suburban Boy trapped in the Mugs Game. A true suburban odyssey.

A short story with a dash of humour, contemporary, set in inner-Sydney. It’s raining cats and dogs and Rick is being jabbed by the hot needle of panic. He’s running late now after dashing out to get last minute dessert for the crucial dinner party tonight where Rick and wife Vanessa are entertaining Vanessa’s boss and his wife. Rick carefully wheels his pride-and-joy, his almost-new Audi, around the block looking for a parking space. He’d had everything set, the Audi tucked away in a nearby street so that Vanessa’s boss and wife could park in Rick’s little private space at the back of the house. Friday night and in this fashionable inner-city suburb it’s easier for a straight white male to win a Premier’s arts prize than it is to find a free space. But it’s okay, as a last resort Rick can park across his own driveway blocking in the boss’ car. Except that he can’t, can he? Some selfish bastard has already parked there. Enraged, Rick mangles the windscreen wipers of the offending car, only to learn when he joins the dinner party, that the boss and his wife brought two vehicles. Can Rick make good before the stroke of doom?
