Jack London was one of the first fiction writers to achieve worldwide fame. Though he is best remembered for his novels The Call of the Wild and White Fang, both set during the Klondike Gold Rush, his short stories are considered masterful. Here in “Brown Wolf,” a couple living on a homestead in Northern California who take in a stray sled dog from Alaska. A story about the relationship between man and animal, “Brown Wolf” is among London’s finest shorter works.

Western writer and historian Dale L. Walker writes, “London’s true genius lay in the short form, 7,500 words and under, where the flood of images in his teeming brain and the innate power of his narrative gift were at once constrained and freed. His stories that run longer than the magic 7,500 generally–but certainly not always–could have benefited from self-editing.”
London’s “strength of utterance” is at its height in these stories, which are painstakingly well-constructed. Brown Wolf and Other Short Stories includes four of Jack London’s most fascinating tales: “Brown Wolf,” “Just Meat,” “A Day’s Lodging,” and “Amateur Night.”

Jack London’s The Call of the Wild was written in 1903, but Buck’s gripping adventure makes for a thrilling listen on audio more than 100 years after it was first published. This gripping story follows the adventures of the loyal dog Buck, who is stolen from his comfortable family home and forced into the harsh life of an Alaskan sled dog. Passed from master to master, Buck embarks on an extraordinary journey that ends with his becoming the legendary leader of a wolf pack.”To this day Jack London is the most widely read American writer in the world,” E. L. Doctorow wrote in The New York Times Book Review. Generally considered to be London’s greatest achievement, The Call of the Wild brought him international acclaim when it was published. His story of the dog Buck, who learns to survive in the bleak Yukon wilderness, is viewed by many as his symbolic autobiography. “No other popular writer of his time did any better writing than you will find in The Call of the Wild,” said H. Captain David Grief, South Pacific tycoon, owns plantations and trading stations from New Guinea to Samoa, pearling fisheries in the Paumotus, and rubber acreages in the Louisiades. His own vessels recruit contract labor, and he operates three steamers on ocean runs. He came to the South Seas at the age of twenty and, blessed with a blond skin impervious to tropical rays, browned over two decades into a true “son of the sun.” At forty years of age, he looks no more than thirty. His manifold enterprises flourish. His is the golden touch. Yet he plays the South Seas game not for the gold but for the game’s sake and for the daring life of the island rover.
Told in Jack London’s graphic and colorful style, David Grief’s adventures are related through these eight long tales of danger and daring:
“The Son of the Sun” “The Proud Goat of Aloysius Pankburn” “The Devils of Fuatino” “The Jokers of New Gibbon” “A Little Account with Swithin Hall” “A Goboto Night” “The Feathers of the Sun” “The Pearls of Parlay”

John Griffith “Jack” London was an American author, journalist, and social activist. He was a pioneer in the then-burgeoning world of commercial magazine fiction and was one of the first fiction writers to obtain worldwide celebrity and a large fortune from his fiction alone. Some of his most famous works include The Call of the Wild and White Fang, both set in the Klondike Gold Rush, as well as the short stories “To Build a Fire,” “An Odyssey of the North,” and “Love of Life.” He also wrote of the South Pacific in such stories as “The Pearls of Parlay” and “The Heathen,” and of the San Francisco Bay area in The Sea Wolf. London was a passionate advocate of unionization, socialism, and the rights of workers and wrote several powerful works dealing with these topics such as his dystopian novel The Iron Heel.
This collection includes “Love of Life,” “A Day’s Lodging,” “The White Man’s Way,” “The Story of Keesh,” “The Unexpected,” “Brown Wolf,” “The Sun-Dog Trail,” and “Negore, the Coward.”

Martin Eden is living in California at the beginning of the 1900s where he struggles to rise above his destitute, proletarian circumstances through an intense and passionate pursuit of self-education, hoping to achieve a place among the literary elite. His principal motivation is his love for Ruth Morse, a member of a bourgeois family. But as Eden is a rough, uneducated sailor from a working-class background, a marriage between them would be impossible, unless he reached their level of wealth and status.
Eden promises Ruth that success will come. Although an impoverished seaman, he obsessively and aggressively pursues dreams of education and literary fame. But Ruth loses her patience and rejects him in a letter.
By the time Eden gains success with publishers and the bourgeoisie who had shunned him, he has developed a grudge against them and become jaded by toil and unrequited love. His success fails to satisfy him, and he comes to believe that people did not value him for himself or for his work but only for his fame.
Martin Eden is considered a semiautobiographical novel in which Jack London expressed his critique of individualism.

A rare pearl is fought over during a hurricane on a South Sea island. A zealous missionary sets out to spread the gospel in a land of cannibals. The son of a Polynesian chief becomes the slave of a white man. These stories and others portray life in the South Seas in the days of tall ships over a century ago. In powerful and compelling language that seems not the least bit dated, Jack London tells eight tales of high daring and great savagery, of bravery and death, even of occasional humor, that could only take place in the exotic South Sea islands. Based around themes London considered important–race, culture, justice, and heroism–the stories derive their intensity from the author’s own far-flung adventures, conveying an impassioned, unsparing vision borne only of experience.
Included here are the following stories: “The House of Mapuhi,” “The Whale Tooth,” “Mauki,” “Yah! Yah! Yah!” “The Heathen,” “The Terrible Solomons,” “The Inevitable White Man,” and “The Seed of McCoy.”

In this classic collection of stories drawn from his own experiences, author Jack London looks back on his days as a teenager aboard the fishing boats of San Francisco Bay. In the early 1900s, men of all stripes descended on these waters to plunder its rich oyster beds. To stop the run on the waters, a patrol was established. London began his youthful adventures on the wrong side of the law, as an oyster pirate. But conscience and common sense got the better of him, and he became a member of the Fish Patrol. The decision satisfied even his legendary appetite for excitement. Placing us smack in the middle of San Francisco at the height of its most reckless days, Tales of the Fish Patrol is vintage Jack London, tales of adventure from a world-class raconteur.

Jack London’s 1903 novel The Call of the Wild is a brilliant tale of resilience and adaptability, but some of the language (which includes words such as brumal, ferine, obdurate, remonstrance and pertinacity) puts a handbrake on the flow of the story. To counter that, Rob Redenbach edited London’s original work and recorded an audiobook that lets you sit back and enjoy the story – without needing a dictionary on your lap.
Narrated with an authenticity that brings the author’s graphic descriptions to life, The Call of the Wild challenges and inspires in equal measure. Set in the Klondike Gold Rush of the 1890s, this modern edition of a timeless classic captures the stark reality of nature at its worst – and best.
The best-selling author of What I Didn’t Learn at Harvard, Rob Redenbach is a talented and versatile communicator. Listed by Business Review Weekly as one of Australia’s top-10 conference speakers, Rob’s first audiobook Poetry For Men (who thought they’d never like poetry) was described by award winning journalist Melissa Doyle as “A beautiful idea and a fabulous voice”.

The Call of the Wild is a novel by American author Jack London published in 1903. The story is set in the Yukon during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush-a period when strong sled dogs were in high demand. The novel’s central character is a dog named Buck, a domesticated dog living at a ranch in California as the story opens. Stolen from his home and sold into the brutal existence of an Alaskan sled dog, he reverts to atavistic traits. Buck is forced to adjust to, and survive, cruel treatments and fight to dominate other dogs in a harsh climate. Eventually he sheds the veneer of civilization, relying on primordial instincts and lessons he learns, to emerge as a leader in the wild. London lived for most of a year in the Yukon collecting material for the book. The story was serialized in the Saturday Evening Post in the summer of 1903; a month later it was released in book form. The novel’s great popularity and success made a reputation for London. Much of its appeal derives from the simplicity with which London presents the themes in an almost mythical form. As early as 1908 the story was adapted to film and it has since seen several more cinematic adaptations.

A departure from London’s normal tales of the frozen North, all of these tales take place in the islands of Hawaii. The tales deal with racial issues, family relationships, leprosy quarantines, missionaries, and the diverse people who make their homes on the beautiful Hawaiian islands.
London traveled to Hawaii in the late 1800s and early 1900s, including an eight-month stay shortly before he died in 1916. He had a fondness for the islands that is apparent in the rich descriptions in these tales.

Life has lost its savor for Mr. Pathurst. New York, fame, women, and the arts have all become tedious. Searching for excitement, he books passage on a cargo vessel sailing from Baltimore to Seattle on a route that travels around the treacherous Cape Horn. Pathurst encounters more than he ever expected in rough seas, turbulent storms, and a mutinous crew. His epic struggles aboard the sailing ship Elsinore have given him a new love for life, but will he survive to profit from it?
Everyone who remembers The Sea Wolf with pleasure will enjoy this vigorous narrative. The Mutiny of the Elsinore is the same kind of tale as its famous predecessor, and it has been pronounced even more stirring by those who have read it. Jack London writes of scenes and types of people with which he is very familiar: the sea and ships and those who live in ships. In addition to the adventure element, of which there is an abundance of the usual London kind, there is a thread of romance. The play of incident-on the one hand the ship’s amazing crew and on the other the lovers-results in a story that demonstrates anew what a master of his art the author is.

Outside the ruins of San Francisco, a former UC Berkeley professor of literature recounts the chilling sequence of events which led to his current lowly state – a gruesome pandemic which killed nearly every living soul on the planet, in a matter of days. Modern civilization tottered and fell, and a new race of barbarians – the western world’s brutalized workers – assumed power everywhere. Over the space of a few decades, all learning has been lost. Unlike the professor on Gilligan’s Island, the narrator is the least useful member of a thriving tribe, whose younger generation (who boast names like Hoo-Hoo and Har-Lip) are mostly descended from the tribe’s brutish founder. He was known only by the title of his former occupation, so the tribe’s name is: Chauffeur.

He is a man capable of abandoning two sailors in an open boat, yet he is an avid and thoughtful reader of the moral philosophers. He is Wolf Larsen: captain of the seal-hunting Ghost, the unforgettable protagonist of one of the world’s great sea novels. Tormented by his own convictions, Larsen is an enigma both fascinating and repellent to his reluctant crewman, Humphrey Van Weyden. Throughout their long and perilous voyage together, the captain’s ruthless belief in the survival of the fittest is pitted against Van Weyden’s “civilization”–a contest between two opposing views of life that demonstrates Jack London’s gift for expressing complex ideas with exciting action. Together with the other stories selected for this volume, The Sea Wolf is a superb example of the genius of a writer who was, in the words of Maxwell Geismar, “the poet of the savage Darwinian struggle.”

Generations have been spellbound by this harrowing story of danger on the sea, psychological confrontation, and the dual nature of mankind. Humphrey Van Weyden, a San Francisco sophisticate, finds himself the captive voyager aboard the Ghost, captained by the brutal and barbaric Wolf Larsen. An excerpt: “And where am I?” I asked Johnson, whom I took, and rightly, to be one of the sailors. “What vessel is this, and where is she bound?” “Off the Farallones, heading about sou-west,” he answered, slowly and methodically, as though groping for his best English, and rigidly observing the order of my queries. “The schooner Ghost, bound seal-hunting to Japan.” “And who is the captain? I must see him as soon as I am dressed.” Johnson looked puzzled and embarrassed. He hesitated while he groped in his vocabulary and framed a complete answer. “The cap’n is Wolf Larsen, or so men call him. I never heard his other name. But you better speak soft with him. He is mad this morning. The mate–” But he did not finish. The cook had glided in. “Better sling yer ‘ook out of ‘ere, Yonson,” he said. “The old man’ll be wantin’ yer on deck, an’ this ayn’t no d’y to fall foul of ‘im.” Johnson turned obediently to the door, at the same time, over the cook’s shoulder, favouring me with an amazingly solemn and portentous wink as though to emphasize his interrupted remark and the need for me to be soft-spoken with the captain..

Torn by a quirk of fate from his life as a dilettante and intellectual, Humphrey van Weydon finds himself at the whim of the ruthless Wolf Larsen. The two men–one youthful, idealistic, and upper-class while the other ruthless, dangerous, self-taught, and self-determined–inevitably become adversaries. As he does in Call of the Wild and White Fang, Jack London dramatizes in this story the violent encounter between safe, genteel comfort and a brutal set of circumstances.

When Humphrey Van Weyden finds himself struggling in the freezing waters of San Francisco Bay, he thinks the worst that can happen to him is drowning. After he is rescued by the Ghost and its captain, Wolf Larson, Humphrey discovers that there are fates far worse than death. On Larsen’s hell-ship, the dilettante hero is forced to slave as cabin boy and humble seaman. Over the seven months’ voyage to the sealing grounds off Siberia, he engages in an epic duel with his ruthlessly Nietzschean skipper, a conflict that must end with the death of one of them.
In Humphrey’s story Jack London recalls his own adventures on a sealing vessel at the age of seventeen. And in the vivid dialogs between Larsen and Van Weyden he gives the clearest definition of his savage philosophy of life.

White Fang is the story of a wild dog’s journey toward becoming civilized in the Canadian territory of Yukon during the Klondike gold rush at the end of the nineteenth century. White Fang is a companion novel (and a thematic mirror) to Jack London’s best-known work, The Call of the Wild, which concerns a kidnapped civilized dog turning into a wild wolf. The book is characteristic of London’s precise prose style and his innovative use of voice and perspective. Much of the novel is written from the viewpoint of the animals, allowing London to explore how animals view their world and how they view humans. White Fang examines the violent world of wild animals and the equally violent world of supposedly civilized humans. The book also explores such complex themes as morality and redemption.

1. “In order to face the constant danger of hurt and even of destruction…he became quicker of movement than the other dogs…more ferocious, and more intelligent. He had to become all these things, else he would not have held his own nor survived”.So writes Jack London of White Fang, the title character in one of his most well-known books. Through London’s tale, the listener will come to know the intriguing life of a wolf-dog from his birth in the wilds of arctic Yukon Territory to his end of days as a resident of a California estate. White Fang’s story is marked by themes of determination, will to survive, and redemption, and has been enjoyed by generations of readers since it was first published in 1906.

Jack London’s tales are more than epics of hardship and survival–they are morality plays in which good wins over evil.
In the desolate, frozen wilds of northwest Canada, a wolf cub finds himself the sole survivor of his litter. Son of Kiche, half-wolf, half-dog, and the ageing wolf One Eye, he is thrust into a savage world where each day renews the struggle of survival. It is a lonely but noble life–until the day he is captured by dog-driving men. The cruel mistreatment he bears in this new life of slavery teaches him to hate.
Only one man sees beyond the rage of White Fang to his intelligence and dignity. Only one has the courage to offer the killer a new life. But can his kindness reach the heart of White Fang?
