A diagnosis of cancer is never welcomed by anyone. But for veteran radio producer Joe Bevilacqua, his diagnosis had a silver lining. He struck up an unexpected friendship with the cab driver who took him to his radiation treatments, a Chilean immigrant named Patrick Nilo (owner of CJ Cabs, Ellenville, New York) who came to the United States in 1973. We go for a ride with them.
This intimate audio verite conveys a candid realism that will make listeners feel as if they are in the cab with Joe and Patrick as they share the very personal stories of their lives. It was recorded in November and December 2014 by Joe during one-hour cab rides from his home in Napanoch to the Dyson Center for Cancer Care in Poughkeepsie, New York, and back again.
“As I told Patrick during one of our cab rides, I feel like getting cancer was my lucky charm. I met so many new people and had so many new experiences that have made me a better person. Patrick has called me ‘a winner’ and has encouraged me to get my positive story out to the world,” reveals Joe Bev.
Joe Bev completed his prostate cancer treatments on December 1, 2014, with a clean bill of health after forty-eight radiation treatments. A brief collage of his cab ride recordings was broadcast on National Public Radio’s Latino USA on March 13, 2015.
Bonus Tracks: Also included in this set is an interview with Joe Bevilacqua, conducted by Steve Mendoza.

This comedy hour combines audio from classic Laurel and Hardy movie clips with a new radio theater production in which “the boys” open a fix-it shop and recall their past failures as they handle a barrage of wacky customers.
In the new moments, full of funny sound effects and music, Joe Bev voices not only Stan and Ollie but James Finlayson, Billy Bletcher, Edgar Kennedy, and other characters, including a dog. All of the female roles, including Mae Busch, are voiced by Lorie Kellogg.
Along the way listeners are treated to hilarious moments from Hal Roach’s classic Laurel and Hardy sound films. Among the highlights of the special is when Bev intercuts a scene from the English film Blotto with the Spanish version, La vida nocturna, one of the films in which Laurel and Hardy spoke phonetically.
The duo was one of the most popular and critically acclaimed comedy double acts of the early Classical Hollywood era of American cinema. Composed of thin Englishman Stan Laurel and large American Oliver Hardy, they became well known during the late 1920s for their slapstick comedy, with Laurel playing the clumsy and childlike friend of the pompous Hardy. They made over one hundred films together, initially two-reelers (short films) before expanding into feature-length works in the 1930s. Their films include Sons of the Desert, the Academy Award-winning short film The Music Box, Babes in Toyland, and Way out West. Hardy’s catchphrase, “Well, here’s another nice mess you’ve gotten me into!” is still widely recognized.

Founded by Rod Kennedy, the Kerrville Folk Festival has run annually since 1972. It is the longest continuously running music festival of its kind in North America. For eighteen straight days and nights each May and June, over thirty thousand guests come from all over the world to experience the magic of what the folks there simply call “Kerrville.” The festival is known internationally as a mecca for singer-songwriters of varying musical styles. It’s a place where those just developing their skills have the opportunity to play their music alongside master craftsmen.
Over 1,500 outstanding singer-songwriters have been presented on the festival’s stages since the beginning. More than just a “folk music” festival, Kerrville offers music of many styles, including traditional folk, bluegrass, acoustic rock, blues, country, jazz, and Americana. The common thread is songwriting. The focus of the festival is to promote emerging artists while giving the audience exposure to both new and recognized, seasoned talent. Major-label artists such as Lyle Lovett, Willie Nelson, Michelle Shocked, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Robert Earl Keen, Lucinda Williams, and Nancy Griffith played Kerrville early in their careers. Through the years, the Kerrville stage has seen other nationally known artists like Peter Paul & Mary, Judy Collins, Janis Ian, and Arlo Guthrie, while others such as singer/songwriter/actor Ronny Cox play on the stages any given year.
Producer Joe Bevilacqua and his wife, Lorie Kellogg, camped out at the festival for five days to create this hour-long collage.

Long before Sgt. Lefty and the Camp Waterlogg gang took over, The Comedy-O-Rama Hour residents were parody versions of Mysteries (Sherlock Holmes), Old-time Radio (The Shadow, The Lone Ranger, etc.), SCI-FI (Willoughby and the Professor), Superheroes (Teaman and Polfroon), and more.
“Those were the XM years,” explains Joe Bevilacqua (Joe Bev), who not only produced Comedy-O-Rama, but also wrote and voiced 80% of the productions, which aired four years on XM Satellite Radio.
Joe Bev, explains, “The idea started in 1996 as a website paying tribute to old-time comedians. When XM Program Direct Steve Karesh asked me to turn the website into a weekly radio show, I wrote many hours of radio theater, complete with sound effects and music. Many others contributed and ended up making 60 hours worth!”
The original scripted Comedy-O-Rama came to a conclusion in 2008, a victim of the SiriusXM merger. During the show’s hiatus, Joe Bev created a number of other successful radio shows, including The Jazz-O-Rama Hour, The Joe Bev Experience, Cartoon Carnival, and The Joe Bev Audio Theater, all still produced and running today on many radio stations, as well as podcasts.
In 2012, Joe Bev revamped The Comedy-O-Rama Hour as an totally improvised radio theater experience involving the fictional Camp Waterlogg. Over 70 hours of those have since been produced, and all are available, under separate titles, from Blackstone Audio.
