French professor Pierre Aronnax and his servant join the Abraham Lincoln, an American frigate, on a mission to find and destroy a “sea-unicorn of colossal dimensions, armed not with a halberd, but with a real spur, as the armored frigates.” The undersea monster is thought to be responsible for the disappearance of over 200 ships. When they encounter the “gigantic cetacean,” it disables the Abraham Lincoln and knocks Professor Aronnax, his servant, and the hot-tempered harpooner Ned Land overboard. The three must cling to the beast or drown; however, they soon realize that the “beast” is really a man-made underwater vehicle.
Captain Nemo captures the men and holds them prisoner on the Nautilus, his incredible submarine. The captain and his unwilling passengers thus embark on a deep-sea odyssey that stretches from the palm-strewn Indian Ocean to the frozen peril of the South Pole. But the enigmatic Nemo has a darker purpose for his voyage: revenge on humanity.
Not just a suspense-ridden drama, this classic novel, written in 1873, predicts with astonishing accuracy the advanced technology and inventions of the twentieth century, and it has inspired generations of science fiction writers.

Originally serialized from March 1869 through June 1870 in Pierre-Jules Hetzel’s fortnightly periodical, the Magasin d’éducation et de récréation and wildly acclaimed on it’s release, 20,000 Leagues under the Sea is perhaps Jules Verne most well known title.
The world is abuzz with tales of a giant mysterious marine animal, roaming the waterways of the worlds, a menace to shipping. The American Government sends out the Frigate “Abraham Lincoln” to hunt the beast. Aboard is the scientist Professor Arronax, his manservant Conceil and the famed Canadian Whaler; Ned Land.
However these three soon discover that far from being a gigantic Narwhale, the object is in fact a fabulous underwater vessel, built and captained by the mysterious Captain Nemo.
As he takes the three on a marvellous underwater tour of the world, will they ever be able to escape back to civilisation?

Do you want to listen to Around the World in Eighty Days? If so then keep reading…
Around the World in Eighty Days is a classic adventure novel by the French writer Jules Verne, published in 1873. In the story, Phileas Fogg of London and his newly employed French valet Passepartout attempt to circumnavigate the world in 80 days on a £20,000 wager (roughly £1.6 million today) set by his friends at the Reform Club. It is one of Verne’s most acclaimed works. The story starts in London on Tuesday, October 1, 1872. Fogg is a rich English gentleman living in solitude. Despite his wealth, Fogg lives a modest life with habits carried out with mathematical precision. Very little can be said about his social life other than that he is a member of the Reform Club. Having dismissed his former valet, James Foster, for bringing him shaving water at 84 °F instead of 86 °F, Fogg hires a Frenchman by the name of Jean Passepartout as a replacement. At the Reform Club, Fogg gets involved in an argument over an article in The Daily Telegraph stating that with the opening of a new railway section in India, it is now possible to travel around the world in 80 days. He accepts a wager for £20,000 from his fellow club members, which he will receive if he makes it around the world in 80 days. Accompanied by Passepartout, he leaves London by train at 8:45 P.M. on Wednesday, October 2, 1872, and is due back at the Reform Club at the same time 80 days later, Saturday, December 21, 1872.

With such books as Journey to the Center of the Earth and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, French author Jules Verne earned recognition as one of the founders of science fiction tales. Although, as one of those called “Fathers of Science Fiction,” Verne often said he had not aimed at seeming scientific, claiming, “I have invented nothing.” However, he did feel, “Anything one man can imagine, other men can make real.” As one of those “other” men he did exactly that in his marvelous description of Phileas Fogg and his remarkable journey Around the World in Eighty Days, a trip done without any modern transportation. You won’t have to pack your bags to join us in hearing the story first published in 1872.

The eccentric Phileas Fogg, a distinguished but sedentary member of London’s Reform Club, takes up a wager that he can circle the globe in just eighty days–an amazing feat in the 1870s. What follows is a lively narrative recounting the journey by Fogg and his valet, Passepartout, as they overcome obstacle after obstacle to win the wager with Fogg’s fellow club members. The pair undertakes a fantastic world tour crossing three continents and two oceans and utilizing every means of transportation available in the 1870s: trains, steamers, an elephant, and a sail-sledge. All the while, they are pursued by a private detective named Fix, who believes Fogg to be a bank robber. Assorted companions join the party, including a damsel in distress named Aouda, whom Fogg rescues in India.
After traveling through Paris, Egypt, India, Japan, America, Ireland, and more, Phileas Fogg finally arrives back in London–having just by the remotest chance met the deadline, convinced Fix of his innocence, and collected the payment. And money isn’t the only prize he’s won.
This is a marvelous travelogue mixed with dazzling suspense, delightful fantasy, and lively comedy where frustrating delays and death-defying exploits abound.
