Coach P created the Choice Not Chance philosophy which focuses on making the correct choices in life. The philosophy is widely used by McCallie, her staff and players, who are very active in the community speaking about “CNC.” Age 26 when she took over at Maine, Coach McCallie was the youngest head coach in Division I history. She took that program from nothing and built it into a very competitive team in a span of eight years. She started to outdraw the men’s team, a rarity in college sports. Maine went from drawing 800 fans a game to 5,800, a sellout crowd. McCallie put her heart and soul into Maine, which she says you must do in any job if you truly want to be successful. She learned to fight for the things she thought were important for her program, and she did not want to accept the status quo. She didn’t want women’s sports to be treated like an ugly stepdaughter. This is the philosophy she imparts to all of her players and now brings to her efforts as head coach of a true national powerhouse at Duke. Drawing on Coach McCallie’s experiences at Maine and Duke and throughout her career, Choice Not Chance highlights lessons for building a fierce competitor, such as “Going against the grain” and “Never become satisfied.”

Mike Krzyzewski’s eight trips to the Final Four and two national championships with Duke University make him one of the most successful college basketball coaches of all time. With Donald T. Phillips, the best-selling author of Lincoln on Leadership, Krzyzewski explains the techniques that have made his program so successful, and offers advice on using those same strategies to excel in both your business and personal lives. Coach K’s blueprint for success begins in the preseason by building the right team and allowing dynamic leaders to step forward. In the regular season, he stresses teamwork and finds ways to turn negative situations into something positive. His teams’ postseason victories come from allowing time to refresh and renew their commitment, as well as from focusing on the task at hand. With personal examples from his life and coaching career, Krzyzewski offers unbeatable tools for success. Narrator Richard M. Davidson’s conversational style perfectly matches Coach K’s relaxed tone.

“In all forms of leadership, whether you are a coach, a CEO, or a parent, there are four words that, when said, can bring out the best in your team, your employees, and your family…I BELIEVE IN YOU. These four words can mean the difference between a fear of failure and the courage to try.”
In his previous bestselling books, Coach K has guided readers to success the way he has guided his teams at Duke University–with the power of his inspirational words and phenomenal leadership skills.
But that was with college kids. Now, Coach K has stepped up to take on an entirely new challenge: volunteering to coach the US Olympic Basketball team.
Comprised of some of the biggest NBA stars, Coach K had to work with huge egos and personal rivalries in order to create an American team that could win against the best competition in the world and restore Team USA to the gold standard of basketball.
This is more than a celebratory book–it’s Coach K’s first-hand account of how he dealt with such stars as Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, Carmelo Anthony, and all the rest to buy into his “total team” play.
