For over 1,000 years, tales of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table have enthralled people, among them Henry VIII and T. E. Lawrence. Proof of the Arthurian legend’s timeless appeal is the fact that scarcely a year goes by without a new adaptation. Published in 1485, Sir Thomas Malory’s epic poem Le Morte d’Arthur became the standard source for future Arthurian works such as Idylls of the King by Lord Tennyson and T.H. White’s The Once and Future King.
With its expressive, vigorous dialogue, Le Morte d’Arthur resounds with colloquial liveliness and ceremonious dignity, the style for a fifteenth-century gentleman. This audio recording grips the listener with the fascinating, fateful story of Arthur’s ascension to the throne as a boy, his marriage to Guenevere, the formation of the Round Table Knights, the quest for the Holy Grail, the ill-fated passion between Lancelot and Guenevere, the treachery of Arthur’s illegitimate son Mordred, and the ultimate destruction of Arthur’s realm.
A superb story of adventure, love, honor, and betrayal, Le Morte d’Arthur is filled with dramatic power and deep, tragic irony.

- Length: 15 hours 12 minutes
- Publisher: Blackstone Publishing
- Publish date: January 01, 2006

This monumental work made the Arthurian cycle available for the first time in English. Malory took a body of legends from Celtic folklore that had been adapted into French literature, gave them an English perspective, and produced a work which ever since has had tremendous influence upon literature.
The story begins with King Uther Pendragon’s use of enchantment to lay with Igraine, Duchess of Cornwall. Arthur is conceived and taken away in secret, returning as a young man to claim the throne by pulling the sword Excalibur from the stone. In retelling the story of Arthur’s rule of Britain, Malory intertwines the romances of Guinevere and Lancelot, Tristan and Isolde, and Lancelot and Elaine. Sir Galahad’s appearance at Camelot begins the quest for the Holy Grail. Finally, Camelot is brought down by the conflict between King Arthur and his natural son, Mordred.

You know the story: King Arthur’s Knights of the Round Table set off on a courageous quest to find the Holy Grail. But you probably don’t know Sir Thomas Mallory’s original 13th-century version of this classic. A knight himself, Malory brought his fascinating knowledge of medieval warfare and chivalry to The Holy Grail, which has since become one of the most famous tales in the history of English literature.
