Many a day we rowed together on that quiet stream…and many a fairy tale had been extemporized…yet none of these tales got written down: they lived and died…each in its own golden afternoon until there came a day when, as it chanced, one of the listeners petitioned that the tale might be written down for her. Thus, in 1864, Oxford mathematician Charles Dodgson (under the pen name of Lewis Carroll) presented family friend, Alice Liddell with the first edition of what would become the inimitable classic, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Seven years after Alice’s success, Carroll published Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There, the equally beloved sequel. Freshly and imaginatively narrated, listeners will be delighted to accompany Alice on her journey into a world where nonsense and mayhem would reign supreme, but for the satirical practicality of a child.

A top notch retelling of Lewis Carroll’s classic. Alice falls down the rabbit hole and wanders through a bizarre procession of memorable characters who have become figures of speech in English speaking culture ever since. Meet the Mock Turtle, the hookah smoking Caterpillar, the murderous Queen of Hearts, the anarchic cook with her pepper pot, the baby that turns into a pig, not to mention the grinning Cheshire Cat and the forgetful White Rabbit.
This narration is humorously performed in a collection of English (one Scottish and a hint of Irish) accents to bring out the wit and wisdom of this classic tale.

This is a tale about a girl named Alice
You’ve seen it many times, don’t be callous!
Every generation has heard it, since eighteen sixty five
There must be wonder inside it, that keeps the magic alive!
Many have ventured what it all could mean,
Or what kinds of things the author had seen.
Some of the voices may leave you blinking,
And asking yourself “what was she thinking?”
There’s something we all know to be true
After listening to Alice you won’t be blue.
You want to laugh, I’ll show you how.

Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the river bank, and of having nothing to do…when suddenly a White Rabbit with pink eyes ran by her. Alice did not think it so very strange to hear the Rabbit say to itself, “Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be too late!” But when the Rabbit actually took a watch out of its waistcoat pocket and then hurried on, she started to wonder! Running after the strange fellow, she was just in time to see it pop down a large rabbit-hole. Down jumped Alice after it (never considering how in the world she was to get out again) and she tumbled into a curious world inhabited by the Mad Hatter, the Ugly Duchess, the Mock Turtle, the Cheshire Cat, and more…
With his marvelous sense of the absurd, Lewis Carroll’s whimsical, fantastical tale delighted children and adults when it was first published in 1865 and has since become a treasured classic of literature.

One of America’s best-known stories in all of literature began with the imagination-stretching tale of probably the most famous little girl in English literature. Alice was a character surrounded by exotic caricatures with “nonsense” seeming to be a reasonable description. But, even the story’s fictional Queen of Hearts said, “Every joke should have a meaning.” In an oblique manner, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland provided just that, prompting one comment, “These are not stories for children, but are the only books in which all of us become children.” That is sufficient to invite you to follow us and “Alice” down the infamous “rabbit hole.”

In 1862, during a boating party on the Thames River, a young Englishman named Lewis Carroll entertained three little girls by spinning a wondrous story of a disappearing cat, a mad tea party, and a croquet-playing Queen of Hearts. The story so enchanted one of the girls that she begged him to put it in writing. The result was overwhelming fame and fortune for the author and a beloved fantasy classic for children’s literature. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland has captivated generations of children and adults with its unforgettable blend of laughter, magic and mischief. It is a hot summer afternoon when Alice spies a white rabbit hurrying across the riverbanks. “Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be too late!” he cries, glancing at a watch drawn from his waist-coat pocket. Of course, Alice has never seen a rabbit wear a waist-coat or a watch before. Curious, she follows the creature-and plunges down a rabbit hole into a strange and unforgettable world.

Lewis Carroll’s classic, enduring tale begins with Alice chasing the White Rabbit down a rabbit hole, where she tumbles into a nonsensical world brimming with peculiar creatures. In that world she encounters a host of delightfully eccentric characters like the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, the Cheshire Cat, the Mock Turtle, and the Queen of Hearts. Some are friends, some are enemies, and all are memorably unique. Throughout her fantastic journeys, Alice retains her reason, humor, and sense of justice.
Alice has become one of the great characters of imaginative literature, as immortal as Don Quixote, Huckleberry Finn, or Dorothy Gale. Her adventures appeal to adults as well as children because they can be read on many levels: a satire on language, a political allegory, or a parody of Victorian children’s literature. Many view the story as a fairy tale about the trials and tribulations of growing up–or down, or all turned around–as seen through the expert eyes of a child.

Lewis Carroll’s classic tale of nonsense and imagination, “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” was an immediate sensation upon its publication in 1865. It tells the tale of Alice, a young girl who tumbles down a rabbit hole into a world filled with talking rabbits, grinning cats, mad hatters and vengeful queens.
Long hailed as one of the greatest children’s books ever created, “Alice” has permeated the culture. The subject of dozens of adaptations, re-tellings, films and stage productions, “Alice” and the sequel Carroll penned soon thereafter – “Through the Lookingglass” – are two of the most treasured works of fiction in the English language.

This special edition brings together both of Lewis Carroll’s marvelous tales set in the whimsical world beyond the looking glass and down the rabbit hole. Caroll’s first novel, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, finds Alice stuck in Wonderland, surrounded by curious creatures and with no idea of how to return home. With questionable aid from the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter and the Queen of Hearts, Alice eventually finds her way back home. But the enigmatic Alice can’t stay away for long, and she finds herself back in Wonderland in the sequel, Through the Looking-Glass.
Most adaptations of Lewis Carroll’s beloved books have combined the stories featured in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, including the 1951 animated Disney film Alice in Wonderland. More recently, director Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland (2010), starring Mia Wasikowska and Johnny Depp, used Wonderland lore to create an entirely new storyline about Alice and many of the other characters made famous by Carroll’s novels.

This poem describes a battle with a fearsome beast called “The Jabberwock” and is considered to be one of the greatest nonsense poems written in the English language. The poem is included in Lewis Carroll’s 1871 novel Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There, the sequel to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. In an early scene in that novel, Alice discovers a book that is written backwards. Realizing that she’s in the inverted “looking-glass land,” she holds the book up to a mirror and is able to read the poem “Jabberwocky,” but she finds it to be just as nonsensical and perplexing as the world around her.

The Hunting of the Snark (An Agony in 8 Fits) is a poem written by English writer Lewis Carroll. It is typically categorised as a nonsense poem. Written from 1874 to 1876, the poem borrows the setting, some creatures, and eight portmanteau words from Carroll’s earlier poem “Jabberwocky” in his children’s novel Through the Looking-Glass (1871).

11-year-old actor Eden Giuliano presents a brand new line of exciting children’s stories from Icon!
This is the handwritten book that Carroll wrote for private use before being urged to develop it later into Alice in Wonderland. It was generously illustrated by Carrol and meant to entertain his family and friends. When a sick child in a hospital enjoyed it so much, the mother wrote him saying it had distracted her for a bit from her pain and led eventually to Carroll expanding the story. The Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson and the Reverend Robinson Duckworth rowed in a boat, on 4 July 1862, up the Isis with the three young daughters of Henry Liddell, (the Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University and Dean of Christ Church) : Lorina Charlotte Liddell (aged 13, born 1849); Alice Pleasance Liddell (aged 10, born 1852); Edith Mary Liddell (aged 8, born 1853). The journey began at Folly Bridge near Oxford and ended five miles away in the village of Godstow. During the trip the Reverend Dodgson told the girls a story that featured a bored little girl named Alice who goes looking for an adventure. The girls loved it, and Alice Liddell asked Dodgson to write it down for her. He began writing the manuscript of the story the next day, although that earliest version no longer exists. The girls and Dodgson took another boat trip a month later when he elaborated the plot to the story of Alice, and in November he began working on the manuscript in earnest.

When Through the Looking Glass was published in 1871, audiences were as delighted with the book as they were with Lewis Carroll’s first masterpiece, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Alice, now slightly older, walks through a mirror into the Looking-Glass House and immediately becomes involved in a strange game of chess. Soon, she is exploring the rest of the house, meeting a sequence of characters now familiar to most: Tweedledum and Tweedledee, the Red Queen, Humpty Dumpty, and the Walrus, just to name a few. The popular and linguistically playful poem “Jabberwocky” is also featured in Through the Looking Glass.

This 1872 sequel to Lewis Carroll’s beloved Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland finds the inquisitive heroine in a fantastic land where everything is reversed. Looking-glass land, a topsy-turvy world lurking just behind the mirror over Alice’s mantel, is a fantastic realm of live chessmen, madcap kings and queens, strange mythological creatures, talking flowers and puddings, and rude insects. Brooks and hedges divide the lush greenery of looking-glass land into a chessboard, where Alice becomes a pawn in a bizarre game of chess involving Humpty Dumpty, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, the Lion and the Unicorn, the White Knight, and other nursery-rhyme figures. Will Alice get her crown?

This 1871 sequel to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland finds Carroll’s inquisitive heroine in a fantastic land where everything is reversed. Whereas the first book has the deck of cards as a theme, this book is loosely based on a game of chess, played on a giant chessboard with fields for squares. Alice encounters talking flowers, madcap kings and queens, and strange mythological characters when she becomes a pawn in a bizarre chess game involving Humpty Dumpty, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, and other amusing nursery-rhyme characters.

This is a SoundCraft Audiobook production – enhanced with music and sound effects – of Lewis Carroll’s “Through the Looking-Glass,” the follow-up story to his classic children’s tale “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.” It is no exaggeration to say that, over the years, “Looking Glass” has become just as popular and beloved as Carroll’s first book. When the original story became a publishing sensation in 1865, renowned for Carroll’s imaginative characters, creative and incisive use of language and keen wit, Carroll set to work on the sequel and the result is a wild, sometimes dark ride through the mind of a child. It tells the tale of Alice, a young girl who steps through a mirror and enters a world of fairy tale characters, talking chess pieces and anthropomorphic flowers and insects.
Long hailed as one of the greatest children’s books of all time, “Through the Looking Glass” is presented here in it’s original, uncut and unabridged format and features a biography of the author.
