Marek Halter est né à Varsovie en 1936. Lorsque l’Allemagne nazie entre en Pologne en 1939, les Halter, juifs, sont installés dans le ghetto de la ville. Grâce aux relations du père de famille, ils en sortent et se rendent à Moscou, d’où ils sont évacués en 1941 pour l’Ouzbékistan. La petite sœur de Marek Halter y meurt de faim, et ses parents contractent la diphtérie. Marek devient alors un “Sans loi”, puis intègre les Pionniers du Soviétisme à la fin de la guerre. À cette même époque, la famille Halter a le droit de retourner en Pologne, mais ils ne veulent pas rester et s’installent en France en 1950. Marek Halter suit alors de brillantes études et devient peintre. Il publie son premier roman en 1976, Le Fou et les rois, pour lequel il reçoit le Prix Aujourd’hui. Sa production est prolifique et récompensée par de nombreux titres, mais il n’obtient la naturalisation française qu’en 1980. Marek Halter est fondateur de deux collèges français en Russie, et il soutient l’Initiative de Genève, plan de paix entre la Palestine et Israël. Ses romans ont pour thème le judaïsme dans l’histoire et les textes bibliques.
