    Midnight Sun

    Publication details

Midnight Sun was published in August 2020 by Little, Brown and Company.

    Synopsis

Midnight Sun, released 12 years after the Twilight series finale, Breaking Dawn, is Stephenie Meyer’s most recent new book.

The much-anticipated novel is the fifth novel in the saga and retells the exact events of Twilight from the perspective of Edward Cullen. Edward is a dreamy vampire who is able to read other people’s thoughts. Bella Swan is the cute new girl at school, and while most of the boys want to date her, Edward can’t fight the urge that he just wants to drain Bellas’s blood.

In order to avoid exposing himself as a vampire, Edward flees to Alaska but winds up returning because he misses his family and is sure he can fight his vampire urges. When he returns he is still drawn to Bella. She fascinates him, not only with her scent but by the fact he cannot read her thoughts. Despite the dangers and risks, Edward can’t help but develop a serious relationship with Bella.

    Overall reviews

Being told from Edward’s point of view gives the story a dark twist, as well as insight into his past and deep inner thoughts. Midnight Sun provides an understanding of the struggle Edward has with following his heart and how that may mean leading Bella into danger. This book adds great perspective and new understanding to the relationship between Edward and Bella.

Edward’s ability to read minds adds an interesting aspect to Midnight Sun, especially during Edward’s interactions with his sister, Alice. Alice is able to tell the future so this adds to the struggle for Edward and intensifies the level of tragedy and conflict.

“People do not want to just read Meyer’s books; they want to climb inside them and live there.” –Time magazine

“A literary phenomenon.” — The New York Times

    The Twilight Saga

    Publication details

The Twilight Saga was published from 2005-2008 by Little, Brown and Company.

    Synopsis

The Twilight Saga is a series of seven novels written by Stephenie Meyer and tells of the iconic love story between Bella Swan and Edward Cullen. The series, primarily told from Bella Swan’s point of view, tells about a high school girl who moves to a new town and falls in love with Edward Cullen, a vampire. Bella eventually learns of Edward’s true identity. Even though Edward is from a vampire family that drinks animal blood, the sadistic vampire James is drawn to hunt Bella down. Edward is able to temporarily protect Bella, but she narrowly escapes.

For Bella’s protection, Edward and his family move away, leaving Bella sad and depressed. She then develops a new friendship with Jacob Black who can shape-shift into a wolf. Jacob is not the only new person in Bellas’s life though. Victoria, another vampire is seeking to avenge the death of James. Jacob and his tribe must protect Bella from her.  Eventually, Bella and Edward are reunited.

Victoria eventually creates an entire army of “newborn” vampires in order to seek her revenge and murder Bella. All the while Bella must choose between her relationship with Edward and her friendship with Jacob. In the end, Edward’s and Jacob’s families unite to destroy Victoria, and Bella agrees to marry Edward.

The honeymoon is cut short though when Bella finds out that she is pregnant. The pregnancy causes Bella to become extremely weak. Giving birth to her daughter Renesmee almost kills Bella, and in order to save her, Edward injects her with his venom and turns her into a vampire. Following the birth of the baby, there is a dispute surrounding Renesmee, but all is settled and the baby is safe.

    Books in the Twilight Saga

The Twilight Saga is made up of the following titles: Twilight, the first book in the series and a New York Times bestseller, New Moon, Eclipse, Breaking Dawn, Life and Death, and Midnight Sun

    Overall Reviews

In 2011, the series had sold over 120 million copies worldwide and has since been translated into at least 38 different languages. To say the series is popular is an understatement, and was one of the most popular teen novels ever written.

The New York Times described The Twilight Saga as a “literary phenomenon” and Matt Arado of The Daily Herald noted that the Twilight books have become the “hottest publishing phenomenon since a certain bespectacled wizard cast his spell on the world.”

The series has been described as an exquisite fantasy with a blend of romance and horror. It has an appeal similar to the Harry Potter books that came before.

The following of the series has been so significant that the term “twihard” has been created for all of the die-hard Twilight fans.

Though the books are incredibly popular there has been concern about the books normalizing inappropriate emotional and physical relationships, as well as the promotion of an anti-woman message.

Since invading Melanie, Wanderer has been longing for a man that she has never even met. Wanderer and Melanie eventually become allies and begin to search for the man that they both love.
