James Dean is the original creator and illustrator of Pete the Cat. He is a self-taught artist originally from Fort Payne, Alabama. His passion for drawing became apparent at a young age, and as a child, you could find James drawing his favorite characters like Snoopy and Yogi Bear.
James earned his degree in electrical engineering from Auburn University and went on to work for Georgia Power for a number of years. Eventually, he was called to pursue his art full-time and began selling his work at art festivals around the Southeast.
It was during this time that he began creating paintings and drawing of his cat, Pete. The little blue cat showed up as a character in James’s artwork around 1999 and has been a permanent fixture ever since.
James Dean’s art has been sold in more than ninety galleries and shops across the United States. He has devoted his paintings to Pete the Cat for fifteen years and turned his natural love for cats into his life’s work. James published his first book, The Misadventures of Pete the Cat, a history of his artwork, in 2006, and he illustrated his first self-published children’s book, Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes, in 2008. There are now almost 100 published Pete the Cat titles with more coming out all the time.
James is humbled every day by the success that this groovy blue cat has brought him. He says positively affecting children’s lives is his number one priority, and he is grateful to have such an amazing audience to work for.

I purchased this book for my son at his school book fair when he was in third grade. It is still a staple in our house today even though he's twelve now. And still one of his favorite books to read. It has a very good and timeless and ageless message on how you can be looking for something so desperately and not know its right there in plain sight with you. And suddenly discover its been there all along and learn to appreciate it that much more. The journey of this adventure that Pete the Cat has shows how he discovers a true friend and real friendship. A very good book for all ages. A family read.

First, Pete the cat was on a boat and he jumped inside the water to look for a seahorse. He could not find one at first, but the seahouse actually was following Pete. Pete found an octopus, whale, eel, angelfish, jelly fish and blowfish. He thought he would never see a seahorse. At last, on his way back to the boat, he felt a tickle on his tail, a seahorse was nearly behind him. He found one! He felt so happy. When I read the story, it was such a fun. Sometimes we want something, but it is actually with us, we just need to look at it, and we would know it is here.

This is the first "Pete the Cat" book I've read. Critically thinking, I give it a 5-star rating. Now, I give it a 5-star rating for young - emergent - readers. "Pete the Cat: Scuba-Cat" is not brain science. In fact, it's a stark contrast from the book I just read minutes before reading this book - "How to Build a Car: A high-speed adventure of mechanics, teamwork and friendship". As opposed to "How to Build a Car", this book is far more basic in terms of reading level. It's far less sophisticated. With that said, this book serves is purpose very well and I can see how "Pete the Cat" books are popular among the preschool-aged children I work with. I think the proper age level for this book is from toddler (ages 2-3) through about 10 years of age. I think this is an excellent book for parents to read their children at the earliest of ages, then for children to read themselves when able. Some details I noticed include:* In both the front and back of the book, a 5-point "I Can Read!" reading scale is provided. This book is carefully designed for the emergent reader. This scale is as follows:"My First" (yellow) - Ideal for sharing with emergent readers 1 (blue) - Simple sentences for eager new readers2 (red) - High-interest stories for developing readers3 (green) - Complex plots for confident readers4 (purple) - The perfect bridge to chapter books(note: As you could probably guess, this book is categorized as a "My First" (Shared Reading) book.)* The simplicity of this book is startling. Each sentence is very to-the-point and simple. It's an absolutely terrific book for young children. I definitely plan to read this book to preschoolers and young elementary-schoolers.* It's a cute book, particularly for its illustrations. The illustrations are all very creative, warm and friendly; very easy to look at, understand and appreciate.

You learn about a lot of types of sea creature names in this book. I thought that was cool for an entry level book.

Pete the car are good books - not always my favorite, but the kids are what matters, right? This one my daughter loved seeing the seahorse throughout the book!

My Review: We are big Pete the Cat fans, and we always like picking up new Pete the Cat books. Munchkin is old enough now to start reading these on his own. This is marketed as a pre-level, though I think it would be better as a level one. Munchkin was able to read it on his own but the print did not stand out enough and he often missed the text because it blended with the color of the images. With that said it was a fun book to read. Munchkin had a lot of fun spotting the sea animal Pete kept missing. This was a great book to read in the summer when we are taking trips to the beach and aquariums.

This is a great pick to introduce ocean animals to my crowd, and they'll love it because it's Pete the Cat. Pete the Cat goes Scuba diving in this cute I Can Read book and Captain Joe tells him all about the different sea creatures he can see. Pete is particularly excited to see a seahorse, throughout the text Pete doesn't notice a seahorse trailing him, but as readers we do. I'm sure this will be interactive and the kiddos will think it's hilarious.

He couldn't find the seahorse! But he looked and looked and looked and looked and looked and looked and looked...and then once he got tickled, and then he found the sea horse! And then once, he got back on the boat!

My kids love the Pete the Cat series. He’s a groovy dude and they always enjoy his adventures. My son really liked that Pete searches for a seahorse for the entire book, not realizing it was with him the whole time.

Bedtime story with my little one ❤️. He used good judgment to deduce what he thinks a seahorse looks like. In the meantime he meets other marine animals and swims along with them. It’s a colorful animation and vivid journey of learning.
