Act Cool Audiobook Summary

*Named a Rainbow Book List Title and one of Bank Street Children’s Best Books of the Year*

A trans teen walks the fine line between doing whatever it takes for his acting dream and staying true to himself in this moving, thought-provoking YA novel from the acclaimed author of Stay Gold.

Aspiring actor August Greene just landed a coveted spot at the prestigious School of Performing Arts in New York. There’s only one problem: His conservative parents won’t accept that he’s transgender. And to stay with his aunt in the city, August must promise them he won’t transition.

August is convinced he can play the part his parents want while acting cool and confident in the company of his talented new friends.

But who is August when the lights go down? And where will he turn when the roles start hitting a little too close to home?

I am in fact crying and don’t know when I’ll stop so!!!Ok I have finally mustered up the courage to formulate my thoughts on this book, so let's go at it!!Act Cool follows August Greene, a high school trans actor who's run away from home to live with his aunt. He moves to New York to act in the School of Performing Arts in New York, a big change from his previous, relatively isolated, life. And he's messy. He's not the most likeable, and he doesn't always act how you would expect or want him to act. But a big part of that is because he feels like he always has to put up an act. He's always on, being the person he thinks he's supposed to be. Which makes it hard for him to parse his own emotions and personality at his most vulnerable. And I really did love this exploration. It showed us August going downhill, August struggling to find himself, August trying to process his major trauma (please check trigger warnings at the end!). I don't think I would get along with August very well in person (and I honestly found him a little egotistical, very irritating at times, and wayyy too short-sided), but I also think his types of stories are exactly the type we need more of. I don't think this is the type of book for everyone. Maybe not for a lot of people — especially if you need to like a character to connect with the story. But I really love that this exists.THEATRE!! Ok, I was really excited for this book mostly because of the theatre aspect, not gonna lie (the remainder of that excitement was due to the cover and because I had loved Stay Gold!). I think it's really hard to walk the line of "enough theatre to make it understandable for the average person" and "enough theatre so that it doesn't sound over-explanatory." I think that at certain points it leaned far one way, but some other times too much the other way. But I also really loved how McSmith shared the community aspect of it, that part that draws most people to the stage or behind it.This book is also majorly important because it deals directly with the issue of representation; specifically, who should be able to play marginalized roles on stage — and what types of stories should be told about them. I really enjoyed the exploration of what it means to have a person represented, and especially the overall message that as important as it is to share traumatic experiences so that others can be aware of them, it's equally as important to share the joy in being a part of that identity.Anyways, enough of my ramblings. I really am glad I finally got to this book, and it did make me cry (an embarrassing amount).Content Warnings: homophobia, transphobia, explicit deadnaming, explicit misgendering, threats and talk of conversion therapy, mentioned cheating, suicidal ideation, gender dysphoria, underage alcohol consumption, underage recreational drug use
