Boogie Boogie, Y’all Audiobook Summary

Author-illustrator C. G. Esperanza delivers a celebratory ode to graffiti and the Boogie Down Bronx through an infectious read-aloud beat and colorful illustrations that leap right off the page! Perfect for fans of Crown: An Ode to the Fresh Cut and Keith Haring.

An NPR Best Book of the Year, ALSC Notable Children’s Book of the Year, Odyssey Award winner, Pura Belpre Honor Award winner, New York City Book Award winner, and Audie Award finalist!

The city is alive with vibrant art in every corner of the parks, the shops, the trains. But most people are too busy to see it–or worse, choose to ignore it! When three children stop to marvel at the art around their community, they realize it’s up to them to show everyone else how truly special it is when art and reality dance together so seamlessly.

Boogie boogie, y’all.

The city boogied all day.

Busy, busy, busy,

Till one kid stopped to say,

Woah, woah, woah!

Look at the art on the wall!

Charles G. Esperanza is the second of six cool kids. The South Bronx is where he first opened his eyelids. A dope land shrouded in bright-colored decay, the home of graffiti and hip-hop DJs! He paints funky elephants! Bodegas too! Mixed with this wonder is some whimsical truth. Charles has a voice that is seldom heard. A fusion of jazz, distorted guitars, and chirping birds. Beautiful, energetic, unique picture book. One of the most interesting, unique children's books of 2021. I love it!

The audiobook was amazing. Definitely deserved it's Odyssey award. However I don't like the art style so I'll or never pick up a physical copy.

Gorgeous artwork leaps off the page into the reader’s imagination in psychedelic ways. The rap-like text presents a hip-hop way of restating the proverb “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” coined by Margaret Wolfe Hungerford in her novel Molly Bawn (1878) long before public property became proletarian canvases in a “dope land shrouded in bright-colored decay.”

Esperanza has created a vibrant, pulsating picture book that is one part summer and all parts joy. While the story is not as successful as the artwork, readers will find much to enjoy. Expected publication date is August 10, 2021. An advanced readers’ copy was reviewed.

I think this book would be fun to play the version Dr. Trimble showed in class and have the kids dance to it. I could also make a writing lesson using it or have them make the noises for integrating music in the classroom while integrating art. I think this is a good book for teaching students to express theirselves and see art more in their community. I also think this book is good for introducing kids to this kind of community and introducing them to another city than they might not be familiar with and to different kinds of people than theirselves. The different pictures and artwork is different and there are hidden things in the book that the kids might really like and get their minds thinking more about art. I could also do an activity with my students where we walk around and look at things around school and look at things and ask what they think about them and look at things in different ways that they might not usually.

This may spark some debate about what is art, similar to Magic Trash: A Story of Tyree Guyton and His Art and its look at a different kind of urban art. The vibrant illustrations and the changing perspectives in this one are fabulous, certainly worthy of the Pura Belpre Illustrator Honor Award it just won. I'd like to track down the audiobook that just won an ODYSSEY Audiobook Medal co-winner award but I can hear young children chanting along with "boogie boogie, y'all as the book is read aloud to them! A young child's appreciation of her neighborhood and its form of art talent is something to celebrate.

Many people are too busy to notice the art on the wall, but some kids and a dog who point it out to everyone. While some say the art is "yuck, gross, horrible, [and] awful," most of the community sees it making the neighborhood "mad fun!" A celebration of graffiti art and summer! The art makes the block. The artwork is perfect to capture graffiti art and blends with the rest of the picture, so you don't know where the art ends and the block begins. Also, the text almost comes off the page and matches perfectly with the words it expresses and illustrations. You have to listen to the audiobook for the story to come alive!

Three children boogie down in the Bronx as they wander and enjoy the art, music, and people of their neighborhood. Esperanza's first foray into children's book publishing, this one is bright and loud, as Esperanza puts his home neighborhood on display. The rhythm and rhyming of the text floats along like a song. It will be interesting to see what else he has up his sleeves. This will be useful to include in units on neighbors and neighborhoods. Nothing out there quite like this one - high quality work!Recommended for grades PreS-3.

Boogie Boogie Y’all is such a beautiful, and energetic story. This book takes us on a brief tour of the Bronx from the point of view of three children. As these children make their way through their city, they notice beautiful art on the wall, artists on the streets, street vendors, different-looking people, and more. Most of all, the children notice that no one else is really noticing. Other people walking by the street art believe that the art takes the form of graffiti, or even regard it as dirty or ugly. This story shows how most children see the world and everything in it—beautiful.

The Bronx comes to vibrant, colorful life in this loving ode to graffiti, as well as the other elements of hip hop culture. Esperanza's realism embraces the quirky adorability of children's facial expressions and the diversity of the neighborhood's residents. The book's wide pages are a perfect canvas for the sprawling pieces, throw-ups, and tags. The narrative, delivered by a fly little emcee, is full of rhythmic energy to match the artwork.

This story is about how adults fall into a routine where they rush through life and don't take a moment to appreciate the life around them. Children on the other hand find enjoyment in the slightest things and are amazed by the life around them. I would use this story in my classroom to prompt a discussion about some of the things we appreciate around us.
