Early to Death, Early to Rise Audiobook Summary

Seventeen, dead, and in charge of heaven’s dark angels–all itching to kill someone.

Madison Avery’s dreams of ever fitting in at her new school died when she did. Especially since she was able to maintain the illusion of a body, deal with a pesky guardian angel, and oh yeah, bring the reaper who killed her to his untimely end. Not exactly in-crowd material. It’s amazing that her crush, Josh, doesn’t think she’s totally nuts.

Now Madison has learned that she’s the dark timekeeper, in charge of angels who follow the murky guidelines of fate. Never one to abide by the rules, she decides it’s time for a major change to the system. With the help of some unlikely allies, Madison forms a rogue group of reapers who definitely don’t adhere to the rules of the heavens.

But as she grapples with the terrifying new skills that come with being a timekeeper, Madison realizes she may not be prepared for what lies ahead–unless she gets some seriously divine intervention.

I really like the concept and the story but for some reason with these books I am having a hard time connecting with the characters. Unusual for me for a Kim Harrison book because the Rachel Morgan books are some of my all time favorites... But... still really enjoyed it! Would probably give 3.5

When we last left our heroine, Madison Avery had just discovered that she is the new dark timekeeper in charge of an army of Seraphim, angels of death charged to reap souls before they can sin enough to be sent to hell. Madison is convinced that she can intervene before the fateful moment, saving lives and giving people a choice to change for the better. Together with a dark reaper, a grim reaper, and her own messenger cherub, Madison fights to prove herself as the new dark timekeeper, all while trying to hide the fact that she is dead from her father until she can find her body and go back to normal.Early to Death, Early to Rise is a strong sequel to Once Dead, Twice Shy. It is light enough to stay fun, but does tackle the idea of fate versus free-will. I really enjoyed watching Madison develop her relationships with Barnabas, Nakita, and Grace, and I appreciated that the entire story did not revolve around a romance. Rather, it shows Madison exploring and growing into her new role while trying to save souls. I do think that new readers should read the first book before taking on this one, as the situation could be confusing without that additional background. Early to Death, Early to Rise was a lot of fun, and I recommend it to those who want a funny, fast-paced supernatural teen read.I received a free advanced reader copy of this book from HarperCollins Publishers at the ALA Midwinter Conference.

Not too much to say….it was a solid second book to the trilogy. Some of the plot was a bit predictable, but I sometimes tend to be the queen of predicting what’s going to happen in both movies and books. In any event, I’m looking forwards to seeing how this trilogy concludes.

Ahh another tale of Madison Avery, dead and in charge of dark reapers, a situation she never saw herself in, not only because she never believed in reapers before her death, but also because she doesn't believe in fate (which is her job as a dark timekeeper, to ensure fate is followed by scything a soul before it is sullied). In this book Madison discovers that just because she doesn't believe in fate, doesn't mean that she can't do her job. She works to save, not only the soul of a mark, but also his life.I could not put this book down. It's not a long read, but it is quite good, as I have come to expect from a Kim Harrison book. Whether it's part of her Rachel Morgan series, or her YA, I find myself constantly on her website checking release dates. Now, for the book itself. I still find myself pulled out a bit every she replaces a swear word with things such as 'son of a puppy' or 'puppy presents'. I understand that it's YA, but it's not for a 9 year old. I don't feel like she needs to go to such extremes to avoid using swears, I've read many YA novels that had tons of them. But that is a small failing, in my opinion. If all of the books I read only annoyed me because of swear word choice, the world would be a fantastic place.I'm getting off topic. Anyway. Fantastic read! I love learning about Madison and her journey to discover her path in life (well, afterlife I suppose, as she's already dead.) I'm eagerly awaiting the release of the next Madison Avery novel.

I absolutely loved Early to Death, Early to Rise. And I don’t know if you know it already, but I’m a huge fan of this series. HUGE. So after reading the first book Once Dead, Twice Shy I could not believe I had to wait till 2011 to read the sequel. And yes I do admit that I did a happy dance when the sequel arrived at my doorstep.Madison, oh Madison, what can I tell you about her. A kick ass heroine, who’s considerate and at times very hilarious. All of the characters in this story are fantastic. Baranabas is loyal to Madison and every time I was reading about him I had a goofy smile on my face. He’s so fine. And then we have Nakita. OMG. She’s very determined and feisty. She could kill you with just one finger. And I’m serious here. Oh I almost forgot about Grace. She’s reminds me of a fierce, witty Tinkerbelle. You got to love that. The plot is really good. There’s plenty of action scenes to get an action addict glued to the pages and seriously I was. The story is also fast paced and I was so sad when I reached the last page.Get it, devour it and love it. Early to Death, Early to Rise is a book you should get!

Don't fear the Reaper? Madison Avery may be dead but that doesn't stop her from trying to do the right thing. Accompanied by her angel and reaper friends, Madison tries to change a system she doesn't believe in while struggling to learn her new timekeeper powers and stay out of detention. As an insanely huge fan of Kim Harrison's The Hollows urban fantasy series I had high expectations for her new Madison Avery series. Harrison doesn't disappoint. While this series is young adult it has all the telltale elements we have come to love from this author; a strong female heroine, wry humor, and an amazingly vivid paranormal filled world. Early to Death, Early to Rise is a fantastic young adult urban fantasy novel filled with endearing characters.I recommend Early to Death, Early to Rise to readers of young adult, urban fantasy, paranormal romance, and especially to fans of Kim Harrison's The Hollows/Rachel Morgan series. ** Review originally posted on my blog: www.FromTheShadows.info **

The book early to death early to rise by Kim Harrison is a great book. There is action, humor, world building, strong female characters, true friendship, and a bit of realistic romance. So what the book is about this girl named Madison and she is a dark timekeeper and she needs to keep a guy from sending a virus Out and killing everybody in a hospital but she got the wrong person. I picked up this book because it had death in it and it looked interesting .I recommend this book to supernatural action lovers . I have not yet read any thing from the author so this is the first time reading from her. The book didn't turn out the way I thought it would I imagined it being about people in war and some one would stop them and Madison and her friends would stop most of them but no I still liked the book. My favorite character is Madison because she's a strong independent girl. Hope to liked his book

Well... It starts out with inconsistencies. I really do NOT like those. However, the story is tight and the characters likable - even the bad ones have something to like, just as they do in real life, and even the good ones have bad sides. Again: as in real life. I love the mythology Harrison has created here and I enjoy reading about Madison and all the people around her. I look forward to getting the next instalment, too. :)

Madison is growing on me. I wasn't sure about her in the prior book but I appreciated the growth she made through out this novel. She is really coming into her own. I liked this installment of the series more so than the last and look forward to the next book.

This is the first book in this series that I have read, but I'm a fan of Harrison's Hollows series. While not quite on par with the Hollows series, this was a good read. It's still the same writing style and storytelling, it's just not as fleshed out as the Hollows series. But I feel that's more bc it's aimed at a younger audience than the Hollows. I would recommend reading the first book first as Harrison doesn't do quite as good of a job at covering the basic info of the relevant high points from the previous book as she did with the Hollows. I will be keeping my eyes out for the other books in this series. First time Kim Harrison readers, if you enjoy this series, you'll enjoy the Hollows even more.

You MUST read the first book (Once Dead, Twice Shy) before reading this because there is no recap and the story jumps right in where we left off. I'm glad I read the first one recently and will look into getting the third one ASAP.I lose myself quickly so it's a great distraction but that doesn't mean I loved it. It relied too much on what I call the "Dan Brown effect"...it looks like a character is backed into a corner but turn the page and a brand-new character conveniently shows up to save the day. The new characters convoluted the story a bit and took away from what I was looking forward to the most from the end of the first book (3 characters going to school in a fish-out-of-water situation). The review is coming across more negatively than I felt about it. I think it's because when I was enjoying it I was absorbed and not taking notes so the only things I jotted down were things that took me out of the story. All in all, I'd recommend it to a YA audience or even a higher juvenile fiction reader; there is no swearing other than maybe a "damn", the fight scenes don't have graphic violence, and there is no sex.Find all my reviews at: https://readingatrandom.blogspot.com
