Envy Audiobook Summary

Gossip Girl meets the Gilded Age in this delicious and compelling novel, the third in the New York Times bestselling series from author Anna Godbersen.

In the thrilling third installment of Anna Godbersen’s bestselling Luxe series, Manhattan’s most envied residents appear to have everything they desire: Wealth. Beauty. Happiness. But sometimes the most practiced smiles hide the most scandalous secrets.

Jealous whispers. Old rivalries. New betrayals. This is Manhattan, 1899.

Two months after Elizabeth Holland’s dramatic homecoming, Manhattan eagerly awaits her return to the pinnacle of society. When Elizabeth refuses to rejoin her sister Diana’s side, however, those watching New York’s favorite family begin to suspect that all is not as it seems behind the stately doors of No. 17 Gramercy Park South.

Farther uptown, Henry and Penelope Schoonmaker are the city’s most celebrated couple. But despite the glittering diamond ring on Penelope’s finger, the newlyweds share little more than scorn for each other. And while the newspapers call Penelope’s social-climbing best friend, Carolina Broad, an heiress, her fortune–and her fame–is anything but secure.

“Mystery, romance, jealousy, betrayal, humor, and gorgeous, historically accurate details. I couldn’t put The Luxe down!” –Cecily von Ziegesar, author of the #1 New York Times bestselling Gossip Girl series

** spoiler alert ** Ok, so while I still love this series, I didn't love this one as much as the ones before. In the beginning of the book, I found drunk Henry to be amusing, but it just kept going and he was being so harsh to Penelope. Yes, I know it's her own fault, but I still felt bad for her. And, I just felt like the scenes with Henry and Diana back and forth were too much of the same, it bored me after awhile. As for Elizabeth, I found her annoying through most of this book. She was supposed to be helping Di but was just a sleeping, frail little thing. I know we found out that she's knocked up, and granted I've never been pregnant, but I thought they went a little far with the weak and frail descriptions. I was happy for her when she grew closer to Teddy, and I'm really glad they did more with his character in this book. I was unhappy with how this book ended for Elizabeth's sake though, hasn't she been through enough. Couldn't she have married Teddy and then have him rush off to war? Why before? Onto Diana again. While I look forward to her pretending to be a boy in the next book and chasing down Henry(does anyone know when it comes out?), I found the whole thing to be a little far fetched. Well, at least, Carolina got a happy ending, not that I care much for her, but she's growing on me.

** spoiler alert ** Just like The Luxe and Rumors, Envy was completely addicting. I got it one morning and finished it before noon the next day. This one was more mature than the others in a way, since the characters have grown and experienced so much. I think my favorite girl in the series has become Diana: I can relate to her the most and I think that she is the most "real" and that she faces the hardest challenges. Elizabeth has become somewhat subdued and predictable.. I immediately suspected her pregnancy, although her marriage to Snowden Cairns WAS a surprise. Penelope continues to make me angry with her manipulation and shallow-ness. Lina is also rather frustrating as she goes between appearing to accept her true beginnings and continuing to live the lie of richness. The prologue was confusing at first, but it made more sense at the end of the book since it was a flash-forward. I LOVED the ending and I cannot wait for Splendor to come out. This book was extremely well-written, interesting, and romantic. Great job Anna Godbersen!

This is the type of book you just can’t stop reading because you have to know the outcome. However, I only really like two characters, the Holland sisters, and half the time I’m mad at how Diana acts. I felt like Henry was misunderstood during the first two books, but this one made me so irritated with him I just couldn’t see straight! Then there’s god awful Penelope and Carolina. I can’t stand either of them. Both of their characters are just full of evil. There’s not one time during these three books that I felt bad for them or wanted things to work out for them in the end. Horrible characters, yet such entertaining storylines.

Envy is the third book in The Luxe quartet and follows on from the events of Rumor, where Penelope blackmailed Henry into marrying her. As the group prepares to head out on a trip, there are more secrets and drama that are unravelled. “Like everything Penelope wanted, it was only a matter of time and perhaps a little of her own rough brand of persuasion before it was hers.” So, in this third book, after Penelope finds herself in a loveless marriage with Henry continuously rejecting her advances, she invites herself on her husband’s trip with his friend, Teddy, bringing along Carolina so she can monitor everything. Elizabeth is also invited, who is still mourning Will and who may or may not be pregnant. She finds herself drawn to Teddy, who shows her nothing but kindness. Diana is along on the trip and finds herself heartbroken over Henry’s actions, but begins a flirtation with Grayson, Penelope’s older brother, who she has instructed to play and manipulate Diana. But Grayson also finds himself falling in love. And last but not least, Carolina, who is finally over Will, finds herself developing feeling for the handsome Leland. “She was like a heroine in a novel that she herself was writing; the character kept protesting that she was too strong for love, and yet the narrator went on describing her desire.” I think this is so far my favourite book in the series because it was so damn entertaining. The group head out on a trip and these books would make such a good movie because there were so many funny moments, especially when Diana and Penelope were competing with each other in order to try and make the men jealous. Oh it was so much fun! And the treachery and betrayal never stop either, for just when you think characters are trying to be better, they reveal that they have been playing everyone all along. “The world was such a marvel—it gave you trials, but if you were still and concentrated, if you tried to do the right thing, it always provided you with salvation.” Penelope! Oh she’s so wicked! But she’s so much fun as well and she really shines in this instalment, albeit in a bad way but she still shines nonetheless. But I’m wondering what’s going to happen to her next now that Henry has finally left her. I also really enjoyed the small bit of romance we got between Elizabeth and Teddy. It hasn’t developed into anything but he’s such a sweet and wholesome character and I really want to see him and Elizabeth together just like I want to see Carolina and Leland together, who are equally as cute. However, I kind wanted to see some sort of romance between Carolina and Tristan but I think that ship has sunk, which is a shame because I think it would have been interesting. Also, I just love how lucky Carolina has been throughout this series, especially in this instalment when her benefactor has left his entire state in her name after his death. Can’t wait to see where she goes from here! “To look in the face of hard things and keep moving forward—that’s what one has to do.” Henry and Diana! Now, I’m kind of getting a little bored of these two, mainly because they’re so pathetic in their pining for each other, especially Diana. She’ll be like “Oh, I’m over Henry!” and then turn into a desperate puddle of angst whenever he is near. And Henry also needed to grow a backbone because he got pathetic as well. Also, I found that ending so funny, with Diana chopping off her hair to follow Henry into the army? I actually had to read it again because I genuinely couldn’t believe that that was actually a part of the plot. It was so nonsensical. “That was how the heroine of a book would play it, and Diana was still writing her own story; the best heroines, she’d always believed, took their fate into their own hands.” Overall, Envy was so much fun to read! I’m really enjoying this series. It’s got drama and a whole host of betrayal and secrets that I’m finding really entertaining.

Tahle série mě pořád baví! Gossip girl je prostě moje. Penelopa jede. Upřímně mě jen štve Lina, jejíž PoV fakt nemám ráda. Ugh. Drama, drama, drama... can't wait for the last book. 3.5/5*English Review:Envy starts where Rumours ended. Our four heroines deal with problems concerning their popularity and social status. Gossip Girl set in 20th century comes with a new challenges, including a trip to Florida. I was quite happy with this plot twist because surroundings in NY get quite repetitive after two books. The story was satisfying enough, fast paced and gripping in times. The whole series mostly focuses on relationships and keeping social status in society. So, if you are not entertained by gossips and lot of drama, avoid this series. 5 PoVs, 4 girls and 1 boy. We can clearly see the character progress indeed, eventhough I didn't like all of it. Penelope is still my most favourite character, followed by Henry, probably. I like Elizabeth, eventhough she was rather sad and depressed in this book. I understand why but still... Diana is still annoying and naive. Really, when is it gonna stop? And Lina... my most hated character. I understand where she's coming from, but I hate the way she acts. Not only does this series have beautiful covers, it is also very entertaining. I enjoy this type of books from time to time, and summer is perfect opportunity for them. Can't wait for the final book. 3.5/5*

** spoiler alert ** Henry is like so perfect and he deserves so much better. Penelope is psychotic . I no longer like Diana after what she did . How could she sleep with him!? I really want Elizabeth and Teddy to be together, he’s so sweet, but that seems unlikely now that she’s knocked up...

Envy is the third instalment in The Luxe series. It picks up right where Rumors left off, with enough scandal to drive even the calmest of readers’ crazy.Mr Henry Schoonmaker – one of New York’s most eligible bachelors, and the love of Diana Holland’s life – has a new wife, and he’s not one bit happy about it, either. How could he be, when the love of his life is not the woman to whom he is now legally bound? Henry can’t even bring himself to look at Penelope with affection so how is he going to fulfil his physical requirements as a husband? As Henry drinks himself stupid night after night, hoping that the alcohol will numb his senses and dull the pain, Penelope’s scheming ways continue evermore.Diana Holland – the real love of Henry’s life, and the reason he married Penelope in the first place – is hurting. Although Henry told her that he married Penelope to protect her, that Penelope had threatened to tarnish Diana’s wholesome reputation by telling all of New York that Henry had taken her virginity out of wedlock, seeing him with Penelope all the time is a painful matter indeed. Now that he is no longer in the market for a wife, Diana is doing everything she can to put her feelings for Henry behind her, but love is relentless and he haunts her everywhere she goes. Will she be able to stay away from him, especially when he is asking her not to?The new Penelope Schoonmaker is watching Henry and Diana with hawke-like eyes. She is no fool and she can see the way the pair of them still look at each other. It makes her sick to the stomach to think of her husband’s eyes searching for someone else in the crowd, but honestly, what did she expect? She bribed him into marrying her in the first place. Penelope knows all too well that the only way she will keep her man is by bribing and manipulating him further. But will Henry put up with it for much longer? If the love of your life was slipping through your fingers, what would you do to be with them?Elizabeth Holland finds herself in quite the predicament indeed. Mourning the loss of her husband, and former servant, Elizabeth finds herself attracting the attention of a one Mr Teddy Cutting – again. Elizabeth feels alone, in despair. Will she warm to Mr Cutting’s affections this time around? Only time will tell. Elizabeth is honest with Mr Cutting about her feelings for him – that the timing is all wrong and she’s still in mourning. But then something happens, something that will ruin the Holland’s forever if Elizabeth doesn’t find a way to fix it. Being with Mr Cutting suddenly seems like a magnificent idea…And Carolina Broad is up to her usual tricks. I hate Lina so much that I can’t even bring myself to write anything about her.Envy delivers the goods. After reading Rumors I wasn’t so sure that Anna Godbersen would be able to top her effort – but I was wrong. She writes brilliantly and reading her work is effortless. Henry’s character is developed further in this instalment and he steps of the pages of Envy like a radiant, shining light. I find myself wondering how much more of Anna Godbersen’s scandalous world I can take. I can’t wait for Splendour (the fourth novel) and I know I’ll re-read Envy obsessively until I get my hands on it.Praise for Anna Godbersen, who has successfully reignited the 1900’s and made it totally cool to be all proper and old school. I love everything about this series – absolutely everything! This would make one hell of a killer television show.

** spoiler alert ** Oh. Oh. Oh. OH. OHH!!This one wasn't as good as the last ones.I mean, it wasn't boring, but the events weren't as exciting as the other books. Penelope Hayes succeeded on blackmailing Henry Schoonmaker into marrying her. But the marriage is loveless and Henry isn't willing to sleep with her. (view spoiler)[ FYI, he does sleep with her at the middle of the book. (hide spoiler)] He is still in love with Diana Holland and their only night together is still cherished and unforgettable from his mind. Diana is hurt by the marriage of Penelope and Henry, but her love for him is inevitable and can't help but have an affair together. But the lies and betrayals lured her into bed with Grayson Hayes, Penelope's brother. Elizabeth Holland is still grieving Will Keller's death. And if things couldn't get any worse, she discovers that she's carrying Will's baby. If the media finds out about it, her reputation is going to be ruined forever. Luckily, her mom proposes a very charming (Ha!) idea: Get married with Snowden Cairn. Meanwhile, Carolina Broud finally moved on from Will to Leland Bouchard, another member of New York's ellite. When Carey Lewis Longhorn dies, Carolina gets a sudden rise of power. Didn't see that one coming. Isn't there anything these naughty, sophisticated teenagers wouldn't do? Even though the plot sounds exciting, it wasn't as well executed as I thought. The only thing I enjoyed were the twists. At the very end, Henry regrets what he did to Diana and leaves her a tear-jerking letter, telling her that he is enlist in the military and that he's going to leave. Diana, determined to get him back, cuts her hair and disguises herself to follow him.OH. SHIT.How can you live me hanging Godbersen? Now I want to know what happens next so desperately!!Good job. Can't wait to read the conclusion to this series.

Anna Godbersen has a very nice writing style. It's formal, yet relaxing to read. Her third book in the Luxe series, Envy, continues the story of the Diana and Elizabeth Holland, Penelope Hayes, and Carolina Broad. The books take place in New York at the turn of the century and it gives us a glimpse of high society and the proper etiquette of the period. The books are addicting. I enjoyed the The Luxe and Rumors so much that I read them both in one day. You feel for the characters and how they were limited by their positions in society. You see how quickly a character can fall from grace, simply by the death of a benefactor or an indiscretion, or a loss of fortune.I would recommend this book and the series to anyone who enjoys a romantic, early 1900's read.

It's more secret, lies, gossip, scandal, and drama, as expected. I both like and hate that I zoned out on some chapters of this book and still easily picked right back up with the story, without rewinding my audiobook. The plot moves forward, but it's never so complicated or fast that I can't jump into the story at almost any point and quickly figure out what is going on with the characters. It's almost like a TV show. I might not want to miss an episode, but if I do, I can still watch the next one and catch back up, especially considering my brain can fill in what I missed, based on what I know of the characters and story line: drama, lies, scandal, gossip, fashion, high society hoopla, and more secrets.
