Guys Read: Kid Appeal Audiobook Summary

It’s here: Volume One of the official Guys Read Library. Jon Scieszka’s Guys Read initiative was founded on a simple premise: that young guys enjoy reading most when they have reading they can enjoy. And out of this comes a series that aims to give them just that. Ten books, arranged by theme, featuring the best of the best where writing for kids is concerned. Each book is a collection of original short stories, but these aren’t your typical anthologies–each book is edgy, inventive, visual, and one-of-a-kind, featuring a different theme for guys to get excited about.

Funny Business is based around the theme of–what else–humor, and if you’re familiar with Jon and Guys Read, you already know what you’re in store for: ten hilarious stories from some of the funniest writers around. Before you’re through, you’ll meet a teenage mummy; a kid desperate to take a dip in the world’s largest pool of chocolate milk; a homicidal turkey; parents who hand over their son’s room to a biker; the only kid in his middle school who hasn’t turned into a vampire, wizard, or superhero; and more. And the contributor list includes bestselling author, award winners, and fresh new talent alike: Mac Barnett, Eoin Colfer, Christopher Paul Curtis, Kate DiCamillo (writing with Jon Scieszka), Paul Feig, Jack Gantos, Jeff Kinney, David Lubar, Adam Rex, and David Yoo.

Guys Read is all about turning young readers into lifelong ones–and with this book, and each subsequent installment in the series, we aim to leave no guy unturned.

The short story “Kid Appeal” is about two teenage boys Dwight and Charlie who enter a school contest to create a project on New Cairo's history. The winner receives 2 tickets to visit the town’s new cool water park. The boys however are up against Zeke Walther who is the school genius. The boys come up with several childish ideas to win the play which is very humorous to read. The boys risk their lives in creating a project that will blow the judges away. This story covers the many experiences during school, such as friendship, adventure and the pressure of schoolwork. Dwight and Charlie share a very strong attachment to each other and need each other to survive the tough school life. They do not fit in well with the rest of the crowd, they don’t play sports and they can’t talk to girls, Dwight only feels comfortable when around Charlie and vice versa. The adventurous side of the boys is very apparent throughout the story, regularly coming up with ideas for the prize that could never be made. The range of ideas go from creating a chocolate diorama to a canon that will shoot out random items. Also, the pressures of schoolwork are very strong in the story, the boys are criticized by their peers and especially Zeke the brainiac about how they will never win. Their parents also have doubts about the boys and don’t show much enthusiasm towards the project. This is much like what can happen to many youths today whose parents can possibly be disappointed in them or show no faith in them to do well at school. However, this story is mainly a comedy and is very enjoyable to read, I definitely had a few laughs. There are many scenes where the boys don’t know what they are doing, just like young boys should be. They are very clumsy, but show a strong drive towards winning, which nearly gets Charlie killed. The overall message of the book is amusing and witty, showing this generation of kids to have fun at school and enjoy doing extra-curricular projects, even if you are against the odds to win. But the final scene in the book is quite descriptive and can make the reader squeamish which is all the more reason to recommend this book to a class of youths, they are guaranteed to thoroughly enjoy it.
