5⭐️This book is so much better than I ever expected. The book unfortunately has much lower reviews. It's a Ya book with a strong female protagonist, love triangles, magic and dragons! The duology has an amazing twist in the sleeping beauty story and makes it really fantastic! This has become one of my new favorite series despite I like YA books less than before

I finally got to read A Wicked Thing recently (I have no idea what took me so long), and while I did point out that it was a bit slower paced and didn’t have as much action as I had hoped, Kingdom of Ashes delivers all that action and fast-paced awesomeness that seemed to be absent in the previous book. Kingdom of Ashes is amazing. There is so much going on in this book, and if you like your books faster paced (like I do), then this is definitely a sequel that you don’t want to miss.This book picks up pretty much exactly where A Wicked Thing left off. There isn’t really any gap in the time from one book to the next, and that makes it easier to jump right back into this amazingly crafted world. Plus, this book revolves around dragons. Yes, dragons!“‘We know three things about dragons for certain,’ Finnegan said. ‘That they exist, that they hate water, and that they kill us. Everything else is guesswork. No one gets close enough to fragons to learn about them and lives to write a book.'”Oh, and Finnegan is back, too, which I thought was awesome (I’m a huge Finnegan fan, and this book only made me more so)!So, Aurora is making her way across the kingdom after running away in the last book, with her powers completely uncontrolled, with essentially no food or anyone on her side. When she finds out the guards are looking for her and that there is a reward for bringing her back to the castle, she tries her best to hide, but when faced with danger, she accidentally burns down the village she is hiding out in. When Nettle reappears, with the job of helping her across the land to Vanhelm (Finnegan’s kingdom), Aurora is relieved and finally feels like things might pan out for her.When she reaches Vanhelm and sees Finnegan, she is thrilled. She tells him what happened, and of course, he welcomes her into his kingdom and allows her to stay. We get to meet Finnegan’s mother and sister, as well. I was pretty partial to his mother in the beginning, because she’s a strong queen who does what she needs to do to help her people, and they respect her for it. She seems to like Aurora for the most part, and allows her to stay there until she figures out what she needs to do.Finnegan and Aurora spend plenty of time together, and their relationship goes beyond that of constant bickering friendship. Aurora does spend a good portion of her time wishing Finnegan would kiss her, and wishing she could just work up the courage to kiss him, and this whole mindset does get a little frustrating, but seeing the two of them develop feelings for each other is sweet. Their entire romance is just one of those that you were probably even hoping for since the first book (I know I was!), and fans will finally get the chance to see some flirtation between the two. Finnegan is back to his goofy, bad-boy self, calling Aurora by the nickname “Dragon Girl,” which is kind of cute.“‘What can I say, dragon girl? You’re hard to look away from.'”As Aurora learns about her magic and how to control it and work with it, she also realizes a few secrets about herself that are vital to the story, so it’s important to pay attention when you’re reading this one. Finnegan helps her research and try to figure things out, while also helping her plan out how she is going to go back and save her own kingdom. When Aurora realizes that she can connect with the dragons that have left Vanhelm a literal kingdom of ashes, she starts to wonder if perhaps the dragons are a way that she can save her kingdom and fight off the king.The ending of this book seemed to wrap up the story that began in A Wicked Thing quite nicely, so I’m not sure if there will be a third book or not. If there is, I’m looking forward to reading it, but if not, I think things were wrapped up pretty well, so it won’t be a disappointment.There is a lot more development with Aurora’s character in this book than in the last – she has become strong and independent – definitely the type of ruler a kingdom needs. The whole dragon aspect of the book was AMAZING. It tied the whole book together, and really made things more interesting. The return of all the characters from the previous book was nice, too.If you liked A Wicked Thing, definitely don’t miss out on this one!Note: I received an ARC copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Kingdom of Ashes picks up right where A Wicked Thing left off. It's a slow start, but I was still interested and engaged, which I think is a perk of reading series all in the one go. The pacing gradually picks up and halfway through, I actually had to pull myself away because it was getting late and I could have easily kept going.I already like Aurora is book one, but she really gets to shine in this instalment. She's pushed further out of her comfort zone and watching her discover her magic was fun. A small qualm I had with A Wicked Thing was that apart from Aurora, the characterisation wasn't as fleshed out as I would have liked. Kingdom of Ashes makes up for that and you definitely get to know the secondary characters better, which I was all for. Romance is not the main focus with this series and though it is present in this book, it's very slow and sweet. It felt right though and it was nice just the way it was. Aurora's love interest appeared in A Wicked Thing and I must say, I wasn't a fan of his straight off the ban. But I've come to care for his character, just as Aurora has.And did I mention this book has dragons? No? Well, it does. So if you like fire breathing creatures, adventure and magic, that's all the more reason to read these books. I'm thinking this series is a duology since I can't find any information on another instalment. Things wrap up pretty well, but I would read more. Then again, I feel like the series was more about Aurora finding her feet and voice and coming into her own and I think that's been accomplished here. But never say never and what do I know?

4.5 stars. This book is a vast improvement upon the first one. Aurora is a strong lead and her powers are developed upon in this book, the romantic subplot is sweet with good pacing and an enemies-to-lovers arc, and we get to see dragons, which is always so much fun. The first book was slow, but it was definitely worth the read to get to this point in the series. Overall this is a really fun read with a cute romantic subplot.

HONESTLY PRINCE FINNEGAN THOUGH

! ACHTUNG – ENTHÄLT SPOILER ZUM VORGÄNGER !Ich mag die Charakterentwicklung von Aurora, weil sie irgendwie so authentisch ist. Ich mag es, wie sie Handlungsmacht übernimmt, wie sie versucht, mehr Kontrolle an sich zu ziehen, stärker zu werden, eigenständiger, aber wie ihr das auch nicht immer gelingt, weil ihr die Erfahrung, die Fähigkeiten oder schlichtweg die Handlungsposition fehlt.Ich mag es, wie sie versucht, eigene Entscheidungen zu treffen und selbstbewusst aufzutreten, aber trotzdem unsicher ist, weil sie vieles nicht weiß oder kennt. Und wie viel sie sich trotzdem weiterentwickelt, ohne ihre Prinzipien aus den Augen zu verlieren.Dadurch ist sie auch nicht perfekt und hat Ecken und Kanten. Sie trifft manchmal falsche oder zumindest fragwürdige Entscheidungen oder handelt unbesonnen, aber ich konnte ihre Entscheidungen jederzeit nachvollziehen. Und obwohl man merkt, dass sie sich in gewisser Weise ihrer Verantwortung als Prinzessin bewusst ist, handelt sie doch immer noch wie ein achtzehnjähriges Mädchen ohne viel Erfahrung, das gleichzeitig zunehmend eigenständiger wird.Grundsätzlich mag ich auch die anderen Charaktere gerne, auch wenn ich mir manchmal gewünscht hätte, die eindeutig vorhandene Tiefe würde ein wenig mehr ausgebaut, denn sie haben sehr viel Potenzial, das nicht vollständig ausgeschöpft wird - leider. Auch hier haben viele Gründe für ihr Handeln, nur König John bleibt in seinen Motiven eher blass.Es gibt glücklicherweise kein Liebesdreieck, weil Aurora zu ihren Entscheidungen steht und keinen verflossenen Lieben hinterhertrauert - erstaunend erfrischend, da fällt einem vielleicht auf, wie üblich das doch bei Protagonistinnen ist. Aber auch in Bezug auf Beziehungen trifft Aurora durchaus bewusste und nachvollziehbare Entscheidungen, was ich sehr mochte.Der Fokus liegt auch eher auf Handlung und Charakteren als auf dem World Building, auch wenn es einige interessante Ansätze, auch in Bezug auf Elektrizität gibt, die jedoch oft leider nur kurz angeschnitten werden. Somit gibt es hier ebenfalls nicht ganz genutztes Potenzial, umgekehrt lag hierauf wie gesagt auch gar nicht der Fokus und die relevanten Hintergründe werden ausreichend dargelegt. Die Handlung wird ein wenig düster und magischer als der Vorgänger, auch wenn sie stark von der Suche nach Antworten geprägt ist und sich daher vom Spannungsbogen nicht wesentlich von dem Vorgänger unterscheidet - gelegentliche Action, aber erst gegen Ende nimmt die Handlung so wirklich an Geschwindigkeit auf. Dadurch ist das Ganze jetzt nicht immer atemberaubend spannend, trotzdem war ich letztendlich mit dem Ende selbst absolut zufrieden, auch weil nicht jeder Strang zu einem abgeschlossenen Ende mit perfekter Schleife geführt wird und ein paar Fragen offen bleiben, wodurch das Ganze realistischer wird (also, für eine High Fantasy-Welt mit Drachen und Dornröschen halt).Fazit: Ein gelungener Abschluss mit einem zufriedenstellenden Ende. Der Spannungsbogen ähnelt dem des Vorgängers und das Potenzial der an sich tiefgründigen Charaktere, die ich mochte, und des World Buildings, das jedoch auch nicht im Fokus stand, wurde nicht ganz ausgeschöpft. Die Protagonistin entwickelt sich authentisch weiter, wird eigenständiger, hat aber auch Schwächen und handelt absolut nachvollziehbar

Der zweite Teil dieser Duologie hat mir wesentlich besser gefallen, als der erste. Das hört sich jetzt ein wenig so an, als hätte ich den ersten Band nicht gemocht. Doch, das habe ich. Aber wo der erste Band noch ein wenig schleppend voranging, war dieser mit Spannung geladen, wo der erste Längen hatte, konnte es mit dem zweiten nicht schnell genug gehen, wo es dem ersten an Emotionen gefehlt hat, sind sie hier nur so übergesprudelt. Der erste Band konnte mich im Großen und Ganzen überzeugen, ich habe aber bewusst einen Stern weniger gegeben, in der Hoffnung, dass der zweite noch ein wenig besser wird. Und er ist viel besser geworden! Band 2 knüpft ziemlich nahtlos dort an, wo Band 1 geendet hat. Aurora befindet sich nun auf der Flucht vor dem König und seinen Leuten, während dieser Lügen über die verbreitet und die Bewohner ihres Landes weiterhin tyrannisiert. Zudem ist da auch noch ihre Magie, die sie immer noch nicht kontrollieren kann und die manchmal außer Rand und Band gerät. Schließlich nimmt Aurora die Hilfe von Finnegan doch an und ab da wird es dann richtig spannend. Die beiden forschen nach, was es mit Auroras Fluch und ihren Fähigkeiten auf sich hat und machen sich auf die Suche nach den Drachen, um mit diesen den König zu stürzen. Doch das stellt sich als schwieriger raus, als gedacht und die beiden müssen einige Probleme bekämpfen. Und dann ist da auch noch die weiter wachsende Anziehung zwischen den beiden, der Aurora aber einfach nicht nachgeben will. Ich fand es wirklich toll, wie die Lage sich hier immer weiter und weiter zuspitzt, denn so war wirklich von Anfang bis Ende Spannung gegeben. Auch fand ich es schön, hier mehr von Finnegan zu lesen, den ich im ersten Band (Schande über mich) kaum wahrgenommen habe, da ich wirklich gedacht habe, Aurora und Tristan werden am Ende das glückliche Paar. Da hab ich wohl ganz weit daneben gelegen. Finnegan ist aber wirklich toll, ich mochte ihn von Anfang an und in Band 2 konnte ich nicht genug von ihm lesen. Die Geschichte zwischen den beiden entwickelt sich langsam und realistisch, nicht zu schnell, sondern genau so, wie man sich eine gute Liebesgeschichte in einem Buch vorstellt. Das Ende hat mir sehr gut gefallen, vor allem, dass man auch noch Hilfe von unerwarteter Seite bekommt. Was mich ein wenig irritiert hat, war, dass Band 2 auch schon der letzte Band sein soll. Das wusste ich zwar vorher schon, aber das Ende ist teilweise noch so offen gehalten, dass es durchaus noch weitergehen könnte, und um ehrlich zu sein, würde ich auch gerne noch mehr von dieser Welt lesen, wissen wie Aurora sich als Königin macht, wie es zwischen ihr und Finnegan weitergeht, was mit dem Drachen ist, wie es mit der Allianz zwischen Alyssinia und Vanhelm weitergeht, was mit Celestine ist..Das hat mich dann doch ein wenig unbefriedigt zurückgelassen. Aber vielleicht sollte es auch so sein, damit man sich selbst ein Bild davon machen kann, wie es weitergeht. Nichts desto Trotz war der zweite Band ein Highlight und wirklich gelungen, und bekommt deshalb von mir fünf von fünf Sternen!

Inhalt:Nach einem Hundertjährigen Schlaf erwacht, durch den Kuss der wahren Liebe erweckt, so soll der Fluch enden! - Doch der Wahrheit sieht ganz anders aus. Zwar wurde Aurora wie von der Prophezeiung benannt aus ihrem Tiefschlaf erweckt, doch die wahre Liebe und ein bilderbuchmäßiges Leben, soll nicht dahinter auf sie warten. Aurora befindet sich auf der Fluch, gejagt von dem Mann der ihr Schicksal bestimmen und ihr Volk führen soll. Ihr Ziel, das Königreich von Prinz Finnegan um Hilfe und Rettung zu ersuchen. Doch was sie an diesem Ort über sich und das dortige Leben erfährt, erschüttert sie durch Mark und Bein, auch wenn es einen positiven Beigeschmack besitzt. Dennoch weiß Aurora, dass es nicht nur ein Spiel mit dem Feuer ist, dem sie sich hingibt, sondern auch über Leben und Tod entscheiden wird. Doch um ihr Volk zu rettet und den Fluch zu schlagen, sind Aurora alle Mittel recht…Meine Meinung:War der erste Band mit vielen Details des Märchens von „Sleeping Beauty“ oder auch „ Dornröschen“ gespickt, so findet man hier zwar noch die ein oder andere Andeutung, jedoch verleiht Autorin Rhiannon Thomas hier dem Märchen ihren ganz eigenen und neuen Verlauf. Man kann fast sagen, sie verpasst dem Märchen ihren ganz eigenen, individuellen und spannenden Charme. Für mich war die Reise an der Seite der Hauptprotagonistin Aurora ein unvergessliches Abenteuer. Sie zeigt so viele unerwartete Charakterzüge, fantastische Eigenschaften und einen besonderen Kampfgeist, der sehr ansteckend auf mich als Leserin gewirkt hat. Die Handlung nahm ihren ganz eigenen und besonderen Lauf an. Sie fesselte mich und lies mich so schnell nicht mehr los. Sehr schade, dass es sich hierbei um den Abschlussband dieser Dilogie handelt, denn ich hätte gerne noch mehr an Auroras Seite erlebt und die Welt um sie herum kennen gelernt. Vor allem wird mir aber der bildgewaltige und sehr fesselnde Schreibstil der Autorin im Gedächtnis bleiben, denn er machte diese Dilogie zu einem wahrhaftigen und unvergesslichen Lesegenuss. Auch wenn die Charaktere nicht immer einen Reifeprozess durchlebten, so wuchsen sie mir, egal ob gut oder böse sehr ans Herz, gerade weil sie von der Autorin sehr greifbar, lebendig und authentisch beschrieben und in Szene gesetzt wurden. Ich würde mir sehr wünschen, dass sich Rhiannon Thomas auch an andere Kindheitserinnerungen bzw. Märchen wagt und ihnen einen neuen Glanz verleiht, denn mit ihrer Märchenadaption von „Dornröschen“ hat sie bei mir zumindest genau ins Schwarze getroffen und konnte mich vollends von sich und ihrer Schreibkunst überzeugen. Fazit:Für mich ist diese Dilogie ein ganz klares Lesehighlight. Rhiannon Thomas verleiht einem alten Märchen einen wundervollen und sehr authentischen neuen Touch. Gespickt mit Fantasyelementen, Liebesgeflüster, Intrigen und Kampfgeist wickelte sie mich um den kleinen Finger und zog mich in ihren Bann.Ich kann einfach nur eine glasklare Leseempfehlung aussprechen!!!

This didn't live up to the promise of the first book. In saying that, I think it was still well written and original in idea and voice. Sleeping Beauty's story is a bit of a boring (and weird) one, and these two books have made into something else.There were a few things which lost it that fifth star:The menace of King John was almost entirely absent, other than in the closing chapters.The other antagonist (and the twist) wasn't entirely a surprise, but the reveal didn't come with a bang either.Prince Roderic was also cut out of this novel- considering he's the one who WOULD have been her true love if things had been different, then it seems odd that he wasn't there to show exactly what there was about him which would have made him that.The romance between her and Prince Finnegan wasn't well done. Not wanting to add spoilers here, but the author needed to decide if Aurora was getting it together with him or not. Sometimes there were obvious sparks and then it kind of fizzled into...not much.The author clearly was trying to make Aurora into a modern gal where she didn't need any prince to help her at the end (just her dragon), so the build up of their relationship seemed as if it were a bit pointless. She might not have needed a prince to save her, but she it would have been more natural to have him fight with her.Over all, I did like it and I'll search out other books by the author because she is a good writer.

As much as I loved this book and loved the first one, the ending felt a little unfinished. It wasn't a satisfying ending. The rest of the story was beautiful! Aurora grew into herself. She was still naive in so many ways. In the end, she still had that naiveté to a certain extent. I think that's what I loved about her. She tried so hard to make everything right and not become like everyone else. Yet, in the end, she had to make some very hard decisions. I think had there been an epilogue, the story would have had a cleaner finish. I love Finnegan! I love Rodric. There were so many awesome characters and developments. I wanted to see more of Finnegan and Aurora together. I like them as a couple. Rodric and Eliza would make a good couple as well.
