Prism Audiobook Summary

Kaida Hutchenson isn’t exactly psyched for the class trip to Carlsbad Caverns. Fourteen hours in a van with preppy jock Zeke Anderson and high school loner Joy Tallon? No, thank you.

But when a tragic and explosive accident turns the journey into a nightmare, Kaida would give anything to be back on the road. Stumbling at midnight through the unforgiving desert, Kaida, Zeke, and Joy take refuge in an abandoned cave . . . until the world goes from pitch black to blinding. The next thing Kaida knows, she’s back home in California and everything is just as it was. Or is it?

Now Kaida must band together with Zeke and Joy in hopes of making it back to the reality she remembers . . . and surviving the one she’s fallen into.

New York Times-bestselling author Faye Kellerman teams up for the first time with her teen daughter Aliza Kellerman to deliver this breathlessly suspenseful paranormal thriller.

I've never read anything by any of the Kellermans, but with a weakness for science-fiction-lite and alternate-reality scenarios, really, how could I pass this one up? I liked, in view of current events especially, the scenario of a world without health care. Immediacy, I guess.Never a huge fan of first-person narratives because they usually suffer from a narrator who is either a) bland or b) more annoying than eff-all, Kaida is a welcome relief. Just weird enough. Anyone who has read Midnighters by Westerfeld with see shades of Desdemona in her, and therefore should enjoy the book. Like I did. In fact, Prism has a lot in common with that series in terms of character dynamic and some style choices. IMHO there.Overall, I think it's well worth a quick read. But it will leave you with the lingering question: how is moldy cheese unnatural?? ;)

Brilliant book about three teens who manage to stumble into a parallel universe where the theory of evolution and natural selection is taken a little too seriously. In others words, those who get sick will get better through natural means, medicine is banned, and if they don't survive than that means it was meant to be and the strong will live on. Can the trio managed to get back home and help save this messed up world? Or will they be forced to choose?

This book is identified as being YA and I think that is accurate. It was written by Faye Kellerman and her high school aged daughter, Aliza Kellerman. The story begins with a group of high school students starting out on their class field trip. Kaida doesn't get to ride with her best friend but instead ends up with the class jock and a girl identified as a loner. The kids fall asleep during the drive only to wake up and find the van has been in an accident and is on fire. After fleeing the van, the kids realize they are on their own in the desert at night as it starts to rain. They seek shelter in a near by cave, and that's when things really go wrong.I found this plot to be original and refreshing. Like most YA novels, it was a very quick read. It was written in 2009 so by now Aliza has probably finished college. I recommend this book if you are looking for a quick, engaging story. I would also consider reading other books by Aliza but I don't think she's written anything else.

I am a romantic. I love romance, and this book just didn't have enough. I mean there was romance in general but there should have been more. Other than that it was great. Just enough action and mystery and it was a very interesting ending. I wished they had made a second book or something it was that interesting. But most books I read should have more books because there is so much more you can do with the story line. I have read books like this one and it turned out great. Well I loved it.

Faye and Her daughter write about parallel universes. Kaida, Joy, and Zack are on a field trip to the Carlsbad Caverns when they are in an auto accident and fire. They get out and go to a cave when it starts to pour. In the cave, they fall down a pit and when they find their way out they are in a parallel universe where things are the same but not the same. There is no Health Care in this new world. Will they get back to their universe?

New Generation I have always been in love with Faye and Jonathan Kellerman. Now I have a new generation to adore. I enjoy YA books even though I’m now 70. It’s always nice to get a new scoop on the world. This fantasy of parallel worlds was exceptional. I’ll be looking for more writing from Aliza and Jesse.

Reviewed by Jaglvr for TeensReadToo.comI have to start off this review stating that I wasn't 100% certain how to classify PRISM. It's one of those stories that definitely transcends more than one category. It's part science fiction with the parallel dimensions. It's contemporary with the tentative love story. But I guess, overall, mostly it would be a mystery as Kaida, Zeke, and Joy try to figure out how they got to where they are and how will they get back home.Kaida Hutchenson (many characters resort to calling her Hutchenson throughout the story) is dreading the class trip to Carlsbad Caverns. It's over a ten hour drive and she's going to be stuck in a van with the jock, Zeke Anderson, and the smoking loner, Joy Tallon. She'd give anything to be in the van with her best friend, Maria, and her sort of boyfriend, Iggy.On the drive, Kaida's van winds up separated from the others. The drive lulls the three to sleep, only to harshly awaken them when the van crashes, flips, and starts to catch fire. The three make it out relatively unscathed, only for them to realize that their teacher has been left inside and is surely dead, as the fire grows out of control.Seeking shelter from the cold and rain, the three teens enter a cave. But it's within this cave that their world changes.Kaida wakes up in her own bed, confused by the bizarre dream she had. She opens her medicine cabinet in the bathroom to retrieve some pain medication, only to find it barren of all medications and containing a bizarre tube: Coyote Cream. She vaguely recalls buying it on a trip somewhere. But when her brother comes into the bathroom and sees the tube, he freaks out, empties the contents, and asks Kaida where she got it and what was she thinking? It's just this sort of bizarre experience that seems to keep happening to Kaida. She's in her familiar surroundings, but it just doesn't seem right. When she approaches Zeke, and he starts to say he had a dream about her...the two slowly come to realize they're involved in something, but not sure what. And when the two speak the same name, Joy, at the same time, they know that something is wrong. With the help of a new student, Ozzy, the teens learn about the world they're now stuck in - a world where health care is nonexistent and medication is illegal and called "spills." They believe the only way back to the world they know is to get back to the cave they sought shelter in the first time. With a very Twilight Zone feeling to the story, PRISM is a book that will keep you entranced until the very end. The concept of a world without any health care is frightening. With dark images of the clean-up crew and a town of dying and ill people, you'll be left to wonder how society survived without everyday staples such as pain medications or antibiotics.PRISM will make you thankful you're in this world and not the alternative one that Kaida, Zeke, and Joy found themselves.

Kaida, Zeke and Joy are all going on a class trip to Carlsbad Caverns. They are riding together with one of their teachers. While in the middle of the desert they end up in a crash. Everyone manages to escape the wreckage but they cannot find their teacher. When it starts pouring rain they take refuge in a cave. Trying to keep away from the opening Joy backs up into the cave and falls into a hole. While trying to rescue Joy, both Zeke and Kaida end up in the hole also. Searching for a way out they find themselves once again falling. The story picks up with Kaida waking up thinking that she has had a bad dream. But it seemed so real to her. When she arrives at school she finds Zeke looking at her in an odd way. Realizing that they need to talk they meet up. While walking along they see a man hit by a car. Nobody helps him, pretty soon a van pulls up and men get out and load up the bleeding man. Everyone acts like nothing has happened. When Kaida mentions it at home to her brother she is told not to talk about it.It doesn’t take long for Kaida, Zeke and Joy to realize that they are not living in the same world that they left before the accident. Nobody mentions being sick. There are no hospitals and no drugs. To speak of these things could get you arrested. While trying to find some “spills”(illegal medicine) to help heal Joy’s arm and a friends mother the group is arrested and put into jail. Racing the clock to escape and find their way back to the exact spot that they arrived in is an exciting adventure.I really enjoyed this book. It kept my attention and kept me on the edge of my seat. I think that Prism ended in a way that could leave an opening for a series or at least another book. I haven’t heard or read anything that there will be, but I would look forward to a second book.

Okay, so I have to agree with most of the reviews written about Prism.Firstly, yes, there are so many unanswered questions concerning the events of the story, about the characters, and about the plot in general. What happened to Ozzy? Does Kaida return back to the parallel universe? Does she find a cure? Who exactly is Erin White? How does the two universes work - does Kaida exist in both universes simultaneously or does she disappears from one and appear in the other as she travel back and forth etc...). Thus, all these troubling questions causes the book to loose parts of its overall glamor.Making it worse, there is so indication of whether there will be sequel. If there isn't, then the story would have ended abruptly. It was one of those endings that make the reader think: What is the point of the story then if the main protagonists does nothing to heal the underlying conflict she faces?Secondly, someone mentioned they wanted to read more about the Clean Up crew - my thoughts exactly. Who are they? What do they do to their victims? These and many more questions add to my curiosity. And thirdly, another question to be asked: The protagonists are made clear, but who exactly are the antagonists? The government? the police force? It would have been more interesting had their been some mentioning of the 'head' or 'leader' of such evil forces - adds more dimension to the book.Overall, I found the characters to be interesting, and the plot to be rather unique as I have never read a book where medicine has suddenly vanished from existing. However, had the book been a bit longer to answer all those questions, then I would have given it a high rating.

Absolutely fantastic!Kaida, Zeke, and Joy, acquaintances at best, are assigned to the same car on the way to Carlsbad Cavern for a class field trip. They are jolted awake after the car runs off the road and catches on fire. Amazingly, all three make it out alive before the car turns into a fiery ball of flames. Before they can wrap their minds around what happened, a dangerous, desert storm strikes, forcing the teens into a cave – altering their lives forever.Kaida, Zeke, and Joy fall into a portal to another world, but it takes them a while to figure out what is going on. When they wake up in their own beds, it is difficult for them to believe the car crash was anything but a nightmare. But, when they realize all three of them had the exact same nightmare, it is impossible to deny something is very wrong. They have arrived in a world with no health care. Medicine isn’t available, sickness isn’t discussed, and everyone is scared. Kaida, Zeke, and Joy learn more about the ins and outs of the illegal world of “spills” dealing than they ever thought was possible when they are forced to locate medicine for Joy. They risk jail time, their lives, and the lives of their families in order to find some semblance of normalcy in a completely un-normal world. Will they ever find a way back home?PRISM is amazing! If you are a fan of dystopian stories this is definitely one you’ll want to read.

Kaida's class is going on a field trip to some caves. There are two cars and she's in the smaller of the two with a teacher and two classmates (Zeke and Joy). There's a car accident and then a downpour, so she and the two others run into a cave. Things get progressively worse (Joy falls into a pit and Zeke and Kaida fall in trying to save her). Then Kaida wakes up in bed, several days before the trip. It's exactly as it should be--her room, her parents, her older brother and baby sister...but it's also different but so subtly that at first, there's no way to even explain why it's weird.Once she figures it out, she needs to find a way to get back home before it's too late.I really liked this book--the characters are all fun and realistic. I especially like that Kaida is a strong girl, one who is more than capable of holding her own, but that she's also really freaked out. I think in a case like this, we'd all be scared. But I like that she isn't just cowering in a corner, waiting for someone else to fix it.This is a really fun book. :)
