Septimus Heap, Book Seven: Fyre Audiobook Summary

The seventh book in the internationally bestselling Septimus Heap series by Angie Sage, featuring the funny and fantastic adventures of a wizard apprentice and his quest to become an ExtraOrdinary Wizard.

New York Times Bestselling Series

“To wrap up her deservedly popular series, Sage calls back nearly all of the first six volumes’ cast members, living and dead, for a fresh flurry of Magykal feats and threats from the Darke.” Kirkus Reviews

“Sage is a master of her created world, paying devoted attention to the smallest detail; the world and the characters in it are as vivid and engaging in this final installment as they have been throughout the Septimus Heap series.” –ALA Booklist

Favorite characters return in this stunning seventh final book in Angie Sage’s New York Times bestselling Magykal series: ExtraOrdinary Wizard Marcia Overstrand, Alchemist Marcellus Pye, and of course Septimus Heap, Jenna, Beetle, Simon, Lucy, and the rest of the Heap gang.

Jenna will soon be Queen and Beetle is now Chief Hermetic Scribe. Septimus, however, must rid the Castle of the Darke Domaine by destroying the Two-Faced Ring. His skills in both Magyk and Physik will be tested, as will his loyalties.

Filled with Angie Sage’s characteristic humor and heart, Fyre is a grand finale that is fantasy adventure at its best.

Fyre (Septimus Heap #7), Angie SageSeptimus Heap is a series of fantasy novels featuring a protagonist of the same name written by English author Angie Sage. In all, it features seven novels, entitled Magyk, Flyte, Physik, Queste, Syren, Darke and Fyre, the first (Magyk) in 2005 and the final (Fyre) in 2013. The series follows the adventures of Septimus Heap who, as a seventh son of a seventh son, has extraordinary magical powers. After he becomes an apprentice to the arch ("ExtraOrdinary") wizard of the series, Marcia Overstrand, he must study for seven years and a day until his apprenticeship ends. In the first book, he is known as Young Army Expendable Boy 412, until his great-aunt, Zelda Zanuba Heap reveals his true identity. His adventures are placed in the context of the warmth and strength of his family, and developed alongside those of Jenna, his adoptive sister, who is heir to the throne of the Castle, the community where they live. The novels, set in an elaborate fantastic world, describe the many challenges that Septimus and his friends must overcome.

Not Septimus at least. I’m going to make sure to get TodHunter Moon immediately after it comes out.Because this book was just not satisfying.Oh no, don’t get me wrong, I loved it. But, as a finale, it didn’t have enough, I don’t know, bang to it. I think maybe Darke did better as the most climatic book in the series. Fyre to me just served as a chance to wrap up all loose ends and say a last farewell to the characters. Those farewells were awfully quick, though, because the fact is that Angie Sage populated her series with so many characters that hardly any of them could get enough time to do much on stage before they are rushed off to make room for the next. I guess I should consider myself lucky that I got to see Stanley again, and Jim Knee as well, whom I was afraid would spend the whole book hibernating like he did in Darke. And I most definitely did not expect to see Merrin again – a – surprisingly – rather pleasant surprise. But you know, I didn’t mind all that much that each of the recurring characters got like maybe five or ten minutes each to have their final say. I was severely disappointed about Syrah – couldn’t we have at least got to see her reunion with Julius? I don’t think she even got any lines in the book. I mean I realize that her real importance in the series was in Syren, but still, don’t we owe her that much?I also wasn’t much pleased with the way Jenna’s mother turned out – I never much liked Jenna, or mostly just thought of her as an argumentative and unhappy person sometimes, but I hate to think what she would’ve turned out to be like if she had been raised by her real mother.Mm, oh well, I guess I did pretty much get what I wanted. I guess my issue was just with the delivery. Like I said, I expected it to be a bit more climatic, being the last book and all, but Darke takes that prize, and Physik and Queste remain tied as my favorite books in the series. One thing I did like about this book though was how it kept taking me back to previous Septimus Heap books, particularly Magyk, and those long-ago days in the old room behind The Big Red Door in the Ramblings, and hanging out with Nicko, Jenna, and Boy 412 in Keeper’s Cottage. There’s something about this series, in fact, that mirrors my own life, with Magyk feeling like something out of my childhood, (although I only first read it six years ago… okay that actually sounds a lot longer ago when you say it out loud), and Fyre reminding me of growing up, graduating (like I did this year – class of 2013!), and being reunited with friends and family for the last time before everyone goes their separate ways and life goes on.It’s no wonder I felt like crying.Sighhhhh… Why do books have to end?Favorite Septimus Heap Moments: Magyk: -Preparing the Sheild Bugs with Marcia. -DeFrosting the Hunter and 'refreshing' his memory. So funny!-The Apprentice tells Jenna, Nicko, Aunt Zelda and Boy 412 that he is Septimus Heap-Scrying in the duck pond and finding out Boy 412 is Septimus. Touching moment. Flyte:-Getting lost in the forest and being rescued by Benjamin -Camp Heap: meet Sam, Edd, Erik, and Jo-Jo! -The Summer Circle, with the Witch Mother warning Nicko and Septimus not to 'go to the circus'. Lol. -Boy 409 and Boy 412 reunite. -Holing up in the Doll House. Creepy. -Trapped in the Port Witch Coven house. Creepier. -Spit Fyre hatches! Physik:-Beetle helps Jenna figure out how to find Septimus. Ever the helpful friend, Beetle. -After Spit Fyre lands on Snorri's boat. Poor Snorri.-Searching for the Glass of Time in Drago Mills warehouse -Septimus is dogged by Hugo Tenderfoot. Cute little boy! -Esmeralda’s Diary-Jenna goes through the Queen's Way and meets Broda Pye and her doppleganger ancester, Esmeralda! -Jenna, mistaken for Esmeralda, is forced to attend her 'mother's' feast, looks up to thank the servant boy who has just spooned sauce into her duckling-free bowl, and sees that it is Septimus. Wonderful moment. -Everything from the feast until they go back through the Glass of Time. -Septimus cures Beetle. Queste:-Merrin applies for the Scribe's job while Beetle is in charge. Hilarious! -Marcia finds out Septimus has been visiting Marcellus. And then goes to visit Marcellus.-Meeting Ephaniah Grebe. -Camp Heap again. I really like Sam too. -Jenna owns Beetle and Septimus by pulling the door of the Hut open. Lol lol lol. -Septimus meets Hotep-Ra. -Finding Nicko in the House of Foryx. -Catchpole and the writing on the door. That man's a riot. -Marcia, Spit Fyre and Sarah meet everyone outside the House of Foryx. Syren: -Septimus sends a letter by Pigeon Post. Lol lol lol. -The performance on the deck of the Cerys. Way to go Spit Fyre! -Barney tries to give Septimus his SafeCharm. Cute little kid! -Merrin mugs Barney Pot. Poor Barney! -Merrin meets Jim Knee. Lol, lol, LOL!! -Wolf Boy has to feed Lucy Gringe to the Grim. Yeah. Not gonna happen. You don't mess with Lucy Gringe. -Septimus meets Syrah Syara. -Septimus escapes the Syren. -The Book of Syrah Syren. Creepy. Sad. -Aunt Zelda makes Merrin apologize to Barney on an onlooker-filled street. Ha ha. -The whole affair with trying to stop the army of Jinn. Humorously crazy. -Syrah discovers she is over 500 years old. And faints. -Returning home. Everyone's okay. Darke: -Beetle and Jenna go out on a date! Yeah, that is what it is. -The Boomerang Charm takes Beetle back to the Manuscriptorium. He he he.-Gothyk Grotto, Igor, Matt and Marcus. -The Cordon -Simon makes a choice between saving his mother or risking the lives of the inhabitants of the castle-Sarah forces Septimus and Simon to get along. -The cute ghost girl in the Darke Halls. -Dragon Battle! -Rescuing Beetle from the Hermetic Chamber. -Foxy tells Beetle he is the new Chief Hermetic Scribe. -Simon and Septimus finally call it quitsFyre:-Lucy and Simon’s Wedding – Finally!-Beetle and Marcia confront Marcellus about the puddles and he cleverly gets away with it, with a smug smile on his face. Couldn’t hold back laughter.-Returning to Keeper’s Cottage and Aunt Zelda telling us that the Marsh Python – who my sister has for some reason sorely missed since the first book – ate the third Triple bowl-Septimus tells Wolf Boy he is a triplet. And that his name is Mandy. Hahahaha!-Marcellus helps Jenna revive the Dragon Boat. So sweet, actually, how Marcellus is Jenna’s several-times great uncle – I never thought about that.-Jenna’s Welcome Back party for Septimus, with all our favorite teenagers invited. This scene should’ve been longer.-Milo saves Jenna from Morwenna. Also very sweet. He’s not such a bad dad, really.-Best part ever : Simon, Septimus, Alther, and (yay!) Jim Knee go to collect Merrin Merredith. Merrin opens the door to find himself face-to-face (he believes) with DomDaniel. And Nurse Merredith gets to show those Port Witch Coven witches up in their faces. Yes!-The Port Palace-Flying back to the House of Foryx-Traveling in the Purple Tube to get back to the Castle, with the Ice Tunnels melting all around the place-Septimus Heap meets Septimus Heap at the House of Foryx. Prepare to get a bit teary-eyed.Goodbye Septimus! Domo arigatou! Thankee-sai! *****2012Hurry up and come out so I can read you already!! Anticipations of Septimus Heap Nombre 7 (Fire with a 'Y', 'cause 'i' is too mainstream): -Lucy and Simon's Wedding (At Last!!)-The Destruction of the Two-Faced Ring-The Revival of the Dragon Boat-The Awakening of Syrah Syara-The Return of The Great and Powerful but Utterly Lazy Jim Knee-Wolf Boy (aka Mandy), Matt, and Marcus Reunited With Their Parents-A Mega Heap-Family Reunion (Including the Forest Heap Boys)-Silas Heap Meets Benjamin Heap (...Again)-Revenge of the Port Witch Coven (?)-Revenge of the Wendron Witches (??)-Alchemie/Marcellus Pye and Magyk/Marcia Overstrand Working Together (??????)-Beetle and Jenna As a Couple (???????????)-Beetle Uses His Power As Chief Hermetic Scribe to Be Totally Awesome, Unlike Other Previous CHS's We Know-Jenna's Official Crowning as Queen-Jenna's Meeting With the Ghost of Her MotherIf I don't see at least three-fourths of these in the book when I read it, I will be sincerely disappointed Miss Sage...***April 2013FML! Drove to the second nearest bookshop today (because the nearest one doesn't have anything of interest) and I did find Fyre there - but it was the new Bloomsbury version with a picture of Septimus riding Spit Fyre on the cover! It's not that I have anything against the new covers (they look kind of cool, actually), except that they don't really look like Septimus Heap - more like a dark-toned version of them. Plus, these new editions don't have Mark Zug's amazing illustrations in them. And all my previous books are the original versions, the ones meant to look like books in the series with charms on the covers. So, yes, I left the bookshop without buying it. It's shallow and a little OCD of me, but I don't entirely regret it (much). I'm going to scour the rest of the bookstores in the city (although the one I checked is the one that gets new books earliest) until I find the fiery red edition with the Pyramid Charm on the cover and Jenna's crown on the back. Here's hoping I get more luck tomorrow. Fingers crossed!***Fffft. Still haven't found it. I officially hate Borders. They don't update their stock of books until someone asks about them, and then only very gradually. I remember when I was still looking for The Dark Tower books I found one Stephen King book in the entire store. The most popular author in America (okay, so this isn't the US, but still) who wrote over fifty books gets only one book in Borders. True, now there's significantly more of them, but ones I've read already and, again, only after I asked.I asked about Fyre twice now and both times the Help Desk lady would just brush me off saying they didn't order them. Without checking the computer even. Sheesh. I bet everyone else on Goodreads has read it by now, and made reviews. And now that exam week is coming up even if I did find it I'd have to force myself not to read it until I finished studying.***WOOOOOOOOOOTTTTT!!!! FOUND IT!! THE RIGHT COVER AND EVERYTHING! FINALLY! I'M SO HAPPYYYYYYY!!!

I really enjoyed this book in a way I haven't enjoyed a Septimus Heap book since Flyte. I did worry a little bit that maybe the reason why I wasn't loving them so much was that I had simply grown too old, luckily, I have just discovered that this is not the case. However, I do have one slight grumble. All the interesting stuff that I really wanted to hear about was in the back pages! I was waiting for a nice, tear-jerking death for Aunt Zelda, but it was explained in a sentence, I think a much bigger deal could have been made out of this idea and many others. I preferred Marcia's character in this book as I have always found her a little irritating, here she was more willing to accept the fact that she's not always right. Merrin's involvement in the story was vaguely unnecessary, but at least the bit with Nursie in the Stranger Chamber provided some "comic relief", so to speak. I found the prologue description of the creation of the two faced ring a bit tedious and, in general, I think there were far too many ExtraOrdinary Wizards (Marcia Overstrand, Alther Mella, Julius Pike, Hotep-Ra, and Septimus Heap for a bit too) I have nothing against any of these characters, but having them all around at the same time was a bit too much. I loved the Sherlock Holmes quote about eliminating the impossible, oh, and the ghost of Jillie Djinn on the sofa is my new favourite character.

I did it! The month of May 2017 will forever be remembered by me as "Septimus Heap Month". What began as an okay-ish story turned into something wonderful and delightful and fun and memorable and dear Lord I DID NOT WANT IT TO END. WHY? WHYYYYYYYYYYY????I love Septimus and I love his family and his friends. I even love the disgusting and filthy Port Witch Coven and the pathetic excuse for a Darke Wizard that was DomDaniel. That slimy, no-good weasel Merrin Merredith? I love him too. The sassy and bossy Marcia, the loons that were the Heaps, every ghost in the Castle, even that goat-face Teritus Fume, the repulsive half-rat Manuscriptorium Conservation Scribe Ephaniah Grebe, adorable Beetle, brave Jenna, helpful Alther, bumbling Milo Banda, odd Marcellus, ALL OF THEM WILL LIVE IN MY HEART FOREVER!!!

Honestly, I thought this book was very entertaining and a satisfying conclusion to the whole 7-book series of Septimus Heap. Sage tidied up a lot of loose ends, hinted at several happy endings, and warded off evil in a conclusive manner. The nostalgia was a nice touch for me with these books. I used these to escape from the adult-ness of work and life this year and I think this added to the well-crafted world Sage put together. A little sad to be done but now on to other things!

With Fyre a long journey that started years and years ago finally ends. It saddens me that it came to an end but I enjoyed it so much. I can't wait to get my hands on the other series that are connected to this series. All of the characters here are like old friends. I want to read more about Septimus and Marcia and Bettlee and Rose. Surely a series I will read again and again and again. I think this was a really long book with great suspense. We had to say goodbye to certain characters and quite some bonds were developed. But for me there was this little scene that really touched me. It's when Marcia calls Septimus her child. It was so heartwarming.

** spoiler alert ** Just a heads up, this is going to be an emotional gushing review of the entire series. I’ve just finished rereading one of my all time favourite series and I’m so goddam emotional. These books are part of what made me fall in love with reading. Angie Sage builds worlds like no one else, I love the intricate details she puts into the world in the Septimus Heap world and the little touches that add so much character to the setting. Her narrative voice holds urgency when it’s needed and delivers a sort of wry humour kind of like Jane Austen’s narrators that like accurate jabs at characters which only further endear them to the reader. I adore how each character makes so many mistakes and has many flaws, it makes them so frustratingly human that sometimes I want to scream at them to just COMMUNICATE or STOP BEING SO STUBBORN but it makes me love them even more. Another thing I loved: THE REDEMPTION ARCS. To the relatively small happening of Marcia starting a program for Hildegarde and other people who previously worked with Dom Daniel to redeem themselves to SIMON HEAP. I loved that Simon was able to acknowledge that he did wrong and then he had to WORK to be redeemed and to gain forgiveness, he could have blamed it on being consumed by the Darke but his mistakes were acknowledged by him and then he worked to rectify them. That kind of acknowledgement and regret at doing wrong and slow redemption arc was so good. THE FAMILY FEELING IS SO GOOD PURE, I love how the Heaps interact with each other, sometimes dysfunctional but always a family. Lucy and Simon as a family unit has my heart and seeing the slow bonding love between them and the rest of the Heaps made me so happy. Also the found family with Marcia and Septimus has my heart, Septimus being described as Marcia’s child is so goddam soft. I loved how the last book still made reference to the first book with petroc trelawney and the three youngest Heaps on the dragon boat. Spit Fyre is so temperamental and contrary and he reminds me of one of my dogs and I love him. This entire series is so good and I love it with my entire heart.Tbh the only thing I could do without is the pairing of Jenna with Beetle (who is clearly gay and in love with Septimus) and milo And Marcia (who is clearly a power lesbian).

Way too underrated my dude.

Once again, Septimus, Jenna, Beetle, Marcia and the supporting cast of Heaps have to battle the Darke. This time, two evil wizards escape their imprisonment in the two-faced ring, as alchemist Marcellus Pye is working covertly to rebuild the Fyre that will kill them. Aunt Zelda, Wolf Boy, even Hotep Ra, and the Dragon Boat all play important roles in helping our heroes vanquish the Darke. As always, Mark Zug's illustrations are a high point too.
