Snowed In Audiobook Summary

Seventeen-year-old Ashleigh is about to experience a lot of things for the first time. 1) Snow. She and her mom are moving from sunny Texas to an icy island in the middle of Lake Michigan, which is completely snowbound. As in, no cars, just sleighs. 2) Small-town life. The icy island? Yep, it’s tiny. Like, 30 people in the whole high school tiny. And scariest of all: 3) Boys. Of course they had boys in Texas. But none of them were as irresistible–or as hard to figure out–as Josh Wynter. And before the snow melts, Ashleigh might also be falling in love…

I think my craving for Christmas stories is blinding my judgment towards books. Take away the snowy atmosphere, Snowed In is pure romantic fluff that features quite immature characters and relationships. But for some reason, I absolutely loved it. Ashleigh Sneaux and Josh Wynter.First of all, those names just make me happy.Ashleigh and her mother decide to embark on a new chapter in their lives by moving up North to a little island where they will run a bed and breakfast. This island was so quaint and cheerful with its numerous fudge shops (seriously, there is a lot of fudge in this book), sleigh rides, snowy cave excursions, and beautiful Victorian homes. Oh, and motorized vehicles are restricted to the mainland. If it wasn’t for the freezing temperatures, I’d pack up my bags and move there, too. The romance is one that I typically don’t like. Josh and Ashleigh have an immediate connection, but of course he has a girlfriend, which sadly doesn’t stop him from flirting. I really did like his character, though, because aside from his romantic confusion, I thought he was genuinely sweet. He also had that lumberjack, sexy, woodsy thing going for him. That’s a thing, right? And not that I condone any sort of cheating, but his girlfriend, Nathalie was truly an annoying character, and I’m certain she should have been twelve instead of seventeen. I mean, the girl throws snowballs to express her anger, literally. The ending was so warm and fuzzy, though, and satisfied my Christmas craving quite well.

Reviewed by Jaglvr for TeensReadToo.comHow would you like to move from Texas, where an ice storm is a major news story, to a remote island in the Great Lakes that has no cars, but does have store signs that say "Return after the first thaw"? And to find out that the junior class will have a mere six students when the winter break is over? Ashleigh's parents are recently divorced, and to make a clean start, Ashleigh and her mother have moved to a small island to open a bed and breakfast named Chateau Ashleigh. Their first day in town, Nathalie and her mom come and introduce themselves. Ashleigh immediately has a new friend. Through Nathalie, Ashleigh explores her new town and meets various kids her own age. Of particular interest is Chase, who works at the local fudge shop. Nathalie warns Ashleigh that Chase is a player, but Ashleigh isn't too worried about that. She's just looking to make some new friends and fit in. One morning, Ashleigh wakes up to find a strange boy knocking on her bedroom door. In enters Josh, the son of the local handyman. Ashleigh's mom has hired them to help do some general repairs around their new house to get it ready for patrons. Ashleigh is immediately drawn to Josh, and a tentative friendship forms. However, it turns out that Josh is actually Nathalie's boyfriend. Nathalie, however, never refers to him by name, only as "my boyfriend." Ashleigh finds this odd but respects the boundaries and doesn't pursue Josh. As the story develops, Ashleigh suspects that Chase has romantic interests in Nathalie, Nathalie might not really like Josh, just the idea of a boyfriend, and could Josh possibly be interested in her??? As the winter months on her new island home pass, Ashleigh finds that she likes the quaintness of her new life, and maybe the move might just have been the best thing for her. I always enjoy Ms. Hawthorne's stories, and this was no exception. I'll admit that I would never want to live on such a cold island during the winter. But Ms. Hawthorne has a way with describing all the charm of the village and almost makes me want to go there, too! Watching the tentative romance develop between Ashleigh and Josh make the story very appealing to all.

Full Review on The Candid CoverIf you’re looking for the perfect read to curl up by the fire with this winter, Snowed In is the perfect book for you! This wintry book takes place on a perfect island and the main character is so sweet. This book is so cute and pretty short.Snowed In is short and sweet, what I would consider pure fluff. This story is about a girl who moves to a small island with her mom and the adventures she has along the way. There are plenty of cheesy moments in the book, but they actually work well with the story and aren’t unpleasant at all. This is also such a quick read that I was able to read in one sitting.I loved the small island setting in the story! Everyone is friends with one another and there are less than 10 kids per grade in the school. Since it is set in the winter, there are also romantic sleigh rides and cross-country skiing described in the book that made me smile. The main character owns her own bed and breakfast, and that is honestly a dream for me. This whole book just gives you a warm, fuzzy feeling.I liked Ashleigh as a character. She is very considerate and thinks of how her actions will affect others before carrying them out. She has a good sense of humour and such a fun personality. I also found Ashleigh to be relatable since she is definitely not a morning and can’t go without a cup of coffee. Her last name, Sneaux, is also, while cheesy, super festive, which I enjoyed.Snowed In is a wintry book set on a small island during the winter. I enjoyed the main character and her sweet personality. I would definitely recommend this as it is such a cute and quick read!

Who wouldn't like to experience snow? As a girl who lived on a tropical island all her life, I really do love to experience it even a bit besides I'm the type of person who is fond of the cold season. I wanted to cuddle on my bed and comforter, read books and drink hot chocolate, So, this book is definitely fun fun fun read for me.Ashleigh's parents are recently divorced, and to make a clean start, she and her mother moved to a small island and decided to open a bed and breakfast. Then she met Nathalie, her first friend. And through her Ashleigh explores her new town and meet various people of her age. Then, One bright morning, she wakes up and find a strange boy knocking on her bedroom door. After several encounters, she develops a crush on him but hey, the guy is in a relationship. Will they get the chance to be with each other and love happily ever after? As the winter months on her new home town pass, Ashleigh realize that she likes the quietness of this new life she have and maybe, just maybe, this move might have been the best thing for her.-----I never really know what's with this short stories that I loved about. One fact is that, I always enjoy reading Rachel Hawthorne's stories and I guess this is my 3rd book of hers that I have read and its still enjoying.Even the story and characters are not that particularly memorable and unique on its own, I still love its easy, feel-good read. Above all the other Rachel Hawthorne novels I've read, this is the one that loved more so far. It's pretty sweet and simple. I never noticed that I'm halfway through it. A very enjoyable read indeed.

This was an easy read. A little ways into it and I was feeling a little like it was too simple and teenager-y, but by the end I was able to appreciate the overall journey the author took us on. Ashleigh opens the story telling you that her parents divorced and her mom warned her off getting serious too early. This sticks with her and is the focal point as she struggles with strong feelings for Josh Wynter when she is determined to not take on a boyfriend. What changed things for me was how the concept of being the other woman started to reveal the bigger story and struggle at the center of it all - Ashleigh’s parents’ divorcing. My heart found some happy when she came to terms with the idea that love is a risk, but a risk worth taking!

This was a perfect light-hearted ya romance to reading during a snowy Michigan winter day! Definitely eating grilled cheese tonight 😍 Highly recommend you read this if you're in the mood for a Hallmark movie type book.

I really loved Rachel Hawthorne's "Snowed In" -- pretty much as much as I have loved all her other books so far. The characters are perfect -- not in the "omg he's a model-rocket-scientist-who-loves-orphans" kind of way. More like they seem real. Ms Hawthorne uses amazing timing and the sequence of events is realistic. There are so many YA books out now that I read and think "As a teenager, would I actually do/say/think that?" but with Snowed In (and pretty much every other Rachel Hawthorne book) she seems to really understand what actually goes on in a teen's head (guess that BA in Psychology wasn't for nothing...).There are points in all of her books where I burst out in embarrassed laughter for one character or another, in extreme cases I have to put the book down and walk away to stop the hyena-like laugh. *SPOILER-ish* The only criticism I have for Ms Hawthorne at all is that her stories seem to follow the same pattern: Protagonist meets new guy but he's off limits --> tries to go out with another guy to take her mind off guy #1 --> Slight altercation between protagonist and guy #1 --> Complication resolved --> Happily ever after with Guy #1. Somehow though, she manages to make me read more books even if "you've seen one, you've seen 'em all". Oh well, I'm off to read another Hawthorne book.

** spoiler alert ** I absolutely loved this book! It grabbed me from the very first page, and I could not stop until I had read the whole thing...and then I wanted MORE! I definitely think this one could have been longer, maybe including how Ashleigh dealt with having a boyfriend and attending school, etc. However, it was great as-is, apparently ;). One thing I didn't particularly enjoy was the way Josh asked Ashleigh to go out with him. It was the exact same way Nathalie had asked him out when he was thirteen - he could have found a much better way, one that would have been special for just the two of them. But noooo, instead, he used what his ex-girlfriend used on him. Lame! But, regardless of that, and as stated earlier, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and read it within a few hours, even while at work using my nook app on my phone ;). I admit that I was kind of obsessed with it. But it was just such a great storyline and different - being on an island with no motorized vehicles...definitely a good change of pace! Thank you Rachel Hawthorne!!

December 22, 2015

This novel is definitely a cozy Christmas read! Since it's a YA romance, it's full of the typical teen angst regarding relationships. Some adults might not even bother with it, as it's a light, fluffy read. I greatly enjoyed it! The book has certainly made me nostalgic for those high school days in which not being asked out was a major tragedy, and the desire to fit in and be accepted was of the greatest importance. The main character in this story, who has the rather unusual and comical name of Ashleigh Sneaux (pronounced 'Snow') is a very likable, spunky person. She and her mom, who has been divorced for two years, move from sultry, hot Texas to a very cold island on the Great Lakes. Her mother wants a total change of scene, especially since her ex-husband has recently announced his impending remarriage. Ash, as she is popularly known, is not at all thrilled at the prospect of having a stepmother, and her mother has decided that, in addition to a change of scene, a career change would also help. The two of them are planning to open a bed-and-breakfast, and Ash's mom has therefore bought a suitable place -- a beautiful, Victorian-style house on the island. All it needs is some remodeling. She has also named the future B&B "Chateau Ashleigh", which I think is pretty sweet. (Please skip the eye-rolling. Lol.) This is a hint that Ash and her mom have a great mother-daughter relationship, and I really liked that. Ash is, in one important way, not like most teen girls; she's not interested in having a boyfriend. So far, her relationships with guys have been very short -- two, or at most, three, dates is her limit, then she needs to move on. She has taken her mom's advice to heart: "Have fun, enjoy life, get married later, much, much, later." Still, she's interested in meeting new guys, and hopes there will be some hot ones on the island. The characters in this novel are very believable and realistically portrayed. They act and speak like real teens, and I loved that! I have read a couple of reviews whose writers thought the characters were rather immature and childish, but my opinion is that we can all be immature at times, no matter what chronological age we happen to be. In contrast to these reviewers, I thoroughly liked and had fun reading about these characters.Ash is a very entertaining, funny narrator. At times she did remind me a bit of Bella from The Twilight Saga, although the two girls are not quite alike, either in looks or personality. However, Ash is facing the same type of experience Bella faced -- she moves from a hot, arid land to one that has totally different weather, although, in this case, it's snow and freezing temperatures our protagonist faces. Also, she moves from a large city, from a high school with thousands of students, to one that has so few, all the grades are in one building. (Well, Forks High had many more students than that.)I love the way Ash takes everything in stride, how she handles herself when meeting new people, and how genuinely nice she is to her new friends. I also love her high ethical standards; when faced with an overwhelming attraction to a new guy whom she later finds out is her best friend's boyfriend, she adamantly refuses to be 'the other girl'.I also liked Josh, the guy Ash feels such an attraction for. However, I did think he was at first too pushy in trying to get Ash involved in a relationship, considering the fact that he already had a girlfriend. So these actions cost him points with me. Otherwise, he was a very sweet, gentle guy, just the type I wish I could have dated when I was in high school, and never got to.... Besides, he did redeem himself in my eyes, later on in the book.I also liked Chase, although not as much as Josh; I did think Josh was hotter. But Chase was sexy in his own way, and he was constantly cracking jokes, which Ash liked, even though she figured right away that he was just a flirt.I don't want to give the wrong impression here, with the mention of 'hotness' and 'sexiness'. This book is totally a clean read, so there are no sex scenes in it, which I think is entirely appropriate for a Christmas-themed (or winter-themed) book. Also, there's little to no profanity, another aspect of the book that I loved.Nathalie, Ash's best friend on the island (she has another best friend in Texas, named Tara), struck me as the most complex character in this novel, although Ash is not without some complexity of her own, and Josh, too, has his deeper side. Nathalie seems to have a hidden problem with self-esteem, though, and I ended up feeling sorry for her. I was glad to see that everything turned out just fine for her in the end.Hawthorne (I wonder if she's any relation to the famous writer, since one of her characters is named "Nathalie") builds a beautiful, very well-told story, and her setting is just gorgeous. From her descriptions, I can picture the island as a magical winter land, in which one can not only enjoy the beauty of this season, but find a cozy love as well. I really enjoyed the tour of the Victorian cottages, the romantic sleigh rides, and oh, the fudge! Yes, this island is very famous for its scrumptious fudge. My mouth watered as I read the descriptions of these sugary confections, and I became so nostalgic for a place I've never even been to....I have always lived in the heat of South Florida (USA), and have been yearning for northern climates my entire life. I've never even seen snow in real life -- only in photos and movies. So I was totally delighted by all the references , especially the cozy fireplaces, dressing like Eskimos, and hot cocoa! And have I mentioned the romantic sleigh rides?Everything about this novel simply and totally enchanted me! It was the perfect holiday read -- nothing too dramatic, too 'heavy' or complex. It was just what I stated above -- a light, fluffy read. There are times I want just that, and especially during the Christmas season! So all of you lucky snowbirds -- whether teens or not -- can grab this book and your hot cocoa with marshmallows, and snuggle up on a comfy couch near the fireplace and Christmas tree, and get set to enjoy! I, unfortunately, must deal with 80-degree temps down here in Miami, but that didn't prevent me from totally having fun reading about being snowed in!For more of my reviews, please visit my blog, A NIGHT’S DREAM OF BOOKS.http://anightsdreamofbooks.blogspot.com

This is such a cute winter read! I really enjoyed it. The story follows Ashleigh as her and her mother move to a northern island in Lake Michigan all the way from Texas. Ashleigh learns very fast what "cold" really means. Ashleigh lives by the code that she will date all the boys but will never have a boyfriend that is until she sees Josh Wynter. This is a really short and quick read so I don't want to spoil it but I highly recommend it. The book has all the elements of a sweet winter meet cute.

I am really starting to love this author, she makes some pretty swoon-worthy and delicious books.4.5 stars. This one is my second book from this author, and this time instead of an island with sun, we are at an island covered in snow and cold. And it is shut off from the main land during the winter, which, as the main character likes to tell us, is a perfect horror setting. Yes, our main character loves horror.I loved the setting, and I can imagine the mom moved away from Texas. Divorcing your husband 2 years ago is one thing, but hearing he is also marrying his new wife, I can imagine that one would want to search for newer and fresher grounds. A place to start anew. Even if that place is freezing cold and filled with snow. I really can't imagine that a school is this small, our classes here aren't that huge (not like our main character's school), but they also aren't so small that there are only 5 or 6 people in them. I would think I would get bored seeing the same 5/6 people every year, for 16/18 (depending on the education level) years. I am sure I would be friends with them, but I am also the kind of girl who likes to try out new things and might get bored from seeing the same thing over and over again. But the island sounded really nice and like a wonderful place. There are enough descriptions of the island and I could just imagine myself there. In the winter, all bundled up and drinking hot chocolate and wandering across the town. In the summer, wearing shorts, shirts and going to the lake.Victorian houses/cottages sound wonderful. I hear a lot about them in my books, and checking photographs of them, they look wonderful. I would love to see them in real life one day.Our main character was a fantastic character, she is honest and she tries to do her best to get used to her new place. She is quick to make friends and she also picks up on the slang that they use on the island. Of course, not everything goes right, she falls for the one guy she shouldn't fall for. However, unlike quite a few books I read, this girl tries her best to steer clear of the guy, and gives him plenty of hints that she doesn't want him this way. And that she is also not really the kind of girl to commit to a relationship. I loved that. Not a lot of girls would be so clear and so vocal, most would just either go crazy or just go out with the guy. But yeah, she is falling, and she is falling hard. She does try to date another guy (who she met before she fell for that other guy), but she quickly notices that he is not the one for her. Especially considering his feelings for another girl. I really liked that our girl loves horror movies, it is something I enjoy watching too, and when I heard she liked J-horror, I was just squealing in delight that someone else knows about those! She is also a great friend and tries her best to keep in touch with her best friend in Texas. I know a lot of friendships break apart due to the distance, but I think I can see that these 2 girls will be forever friends.Josh was decent, I didn't particularly like him at times. I wish he would have been honest with Nathalia, but I can also imagine that he wouldn't want to break up or hurt his relationship with Nathalia. The town is so tiny, and you are really stuck with the same people, rumours may start, people may start to dislike you and you will be stuck with no easy way out. But I didn't like how he flirted with one girl and then had a girlfriend. Even with everything going on and all the circumstances, I don't think this is good. You can't just do that. Luckily, he does feel guilty and we get shown that quite a bit.But I also saw a side of Josh that I really liked. I liked that he was sweet and that he really cared about our main character. I won't say anything else, you will have to read the book to find out what will happen between the main character and Josh. Then we have Nathalia, I didn't like her that much. She was nice, but she was also a bit possessive and I didn't like how she called people not by their names, but by their titles. Josh = my boyfriend. Our main character: My new best friend. It got quite tiring to see her use titles for people. While it wasn't right, I still couldn't help laughing when people made jokes about her doing it.I also didn't like how nosy she was. How she apparently had no respect for privacy. Instead of giving our main character some time, she pushed and pulled. She just barged into the main character's room and there were also other times where she just seemed to force things on people. I am sure she is a nice girl, but I think she is a bit too nosy and a bit too much into having a boyfriend for just that. The story was really fun and I really enjoyed myself. There was a lot of drama, romance and fluff happening, just the kind of book I am in the mood for. Also I loved that all the guys were apparently super hot, and that we got enough details about how they looked to do a lot of swooning. :)I would really recommend this book to everyone! Are you in need for a bit of fluff and drama? Do you want romance? Then try this book out.Review first posted at http://twirlingbookprincess.com/
