The Outliers Audiobook Summary

From the New York Times bestselling author of Reconstructing Amelia comes a fast-paced teen series where one girl learns that in a world of intrigue, betrayal, and deeply buried secrets, it is vital to trust your instincts.

It all starts with a text: Please, Wylie, I need your help. Wylie hasn’t heard from Cassie in over a week, not since their last fight. But that doesn’t matter. Cassie’s in trouble, so Wylie decides to do what she has done so many times before: save her best friend from herself.

This time it’s different, though. Instead of telling Wylie where she is, Cassie sends cryptic clues. And instead of having Wylie come by herself, Jasper shows up saying Cassie sent him to help. Trusting the guy who sent Cassie off the rails doesn’t feel right, but Wylie has no choice but to ignore her gut instinct and go with him.

But figuring out where Cassie is goes from difficult to dangerous, fast. As Wylie and Jasper head farther and farther north into the dense woods of Maine, Wylie struggles to control her growing sense that something is really wrong. What isn’t Cassie telling them? And could finding her be only the beginning?

In this breakneck tale, New York Times bestselling author Kimberly McCreight brilliantly chronicles a fateful journey that begins with a single decision–and ends up changing everything.

I received this book on a read to review basis from NetGalley. Thank you to the author, Kimberly McCreight , and the publisher, Harper Collins, for this opportunity.Wow! Well this book absolutely blew me away! I am writing this fresh off finishing the book and my mouth is still gaping at the shocking, cliff-hanger ending that has left me feeling utterly despondent that I have to wait a whole year or more until the next installment of this series is released! If you like action-packed reading that leaves you holding your breath for chapters at a time, is full of prevarications, misrepresented characters and false clues to bar the path to enlightenment and has a whole cast of unreliable and unfathomable characters, then this book is for you! This story is told through the eyes of teenage Wylie who suffers from a sever case of anxiety and has become recently agoraphobic, following the death of her mother. When her best friend, Cassie, disappears and her new boyfriend turns up at Wylie's house, she must decide whether to grit her teeth and overcome her fears or let them swallow her and refuse to help her friends. She chooses the former and is led on a wild chase including stabbings, gun chases, abduction and imprisonment following the directions left in Cassie's cryptic text messages as they attempt to find her. This book deals with the problems of teenage friendships and pubescent relationships in a turbulent and ever-changing modern world, grief and how to deal with the loss of a parent, the impact our parents and our peers have on our individual selves, technological advancement, warfare and the pros and cons of using them and emotional intelligence and how it defines us as a person. This book is full of false endings and I had no idea of the dark turns the plot would take. Every character has something to hide and reading this becomes one huge puzzle to learn the truth. On parts it became a little too knotty and I had trouble dissecting where exactly the story was leading me. It seemed that as it progressed we veered further from the psychological thriller I had expected. I did not dislike the ending at all, but it was vastly different to what had been iterated and what the majority of the book had set-up and led me to believe.

From one of my favorite authors comes this spectacular YA release, which will easily appeal to teens and adults alike. Gripping from the get go, I read THE OUTLIERS over the course of a single weekend; I couldn't put it down, and was shocked by the twists and turns the novel took as well as the jaw dropping ending. This one releases in May 2016 - well worth the wait, but preorder now. You'll be glad you did! I can't wait for the next installment in this series.

Want to see more from me? Check out my Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfer...Wylie's friend Cassie has gone missing. Jasper, Cassie's boyfriend shows up at her house and then she receives a text message from Cassie saying she needs help. Wylie and Jasper decide to get in his car and go rescue Cassie themselves. The scenario of the book was DEFINITELY unbelievable and far fetched, which has been the major complaint for many people reviewing this book. In my opinion, it's not that big of a deal since it is a story, not a real life event. The book had me on the edge of my seat the entire time and that's what I want from a thriller novel. Kimberly McCreight is one of my favourite authors and she did not disappoint. The book is so fast paced and action packed I did not want to put it down! There were many plot twists I didn't call at all which was exciting for me since I usually am able to call everything that goes on in thrillers, they all seem so predictable these days. This was definitely a great set up for the rest of the series! The cliffhanger makes me want the second book ASAP, I need to know what happens next. Personally, it was a fun read and I liked how far fetched and ridiculous it seemed.

I am a huge fan of “Reconstructing Amelia” and was looking forward to reading Kimberley McCreight’s new YA novel, “The Outliers”. I was, once again, pleasantly entertained. Who are the Outliers? Well I certainly can’t tell you that without revealing major spoilers. What I can tell you is this novel is a mysterious, suspense-fueled delight. Wylie receives a strange text from her once-estranged best friend Cassie. When Cassie’s boyfriend Jasper shows up at Wylie’s door, her worst fears are confirmed- something terrible has happened to Cassie and it is up to Jasper and Wylie to piece together the clues left behind in order to save their friend. But of course it is not as simple as that, there are dangerous people also looking for Cassie and for Wylie- but why are they looking for them? And what do they plan on doing to them if they find them? This novel was unpredictable and absolutely delicious. There is no other word to describe it, since I totally digested this novel in a matter of days. The plot is full of suspense and danger, and has unexpected twists that you would not expect in a YA novel. However, McCreight leaves her readers guessing to the very last page (and beyond- since it is quite clear there will be more to come in this saga). Wylie was a fascinating creature, and I completely empathised with her, being an anxiety sufferer myself. Wylie not being able to leave her house after the death of her mother, needing things to be in a certain way, her “monster, out of control” brain were all aspects that contributed to Wylie’s “eccentric” yet lovable personality (and relatable, for me at least). Cassie starts off as completely unlikable, and then redeems herself in a most unfortunate way at the end of the novel. This novel will stick with you. McCreight’s writing is a double-edged sword- you want the novel to end (so you can discover the outcome) but the thought of putting the book down for good brings you physical pain. This is a challenge for an author to accomplish- and McCreight does it beautifully.

A book that carries itself with a certain kind of intensity is always deserving of a good read, and that's what I recommend for The Outliers...time. Find a good couple of hours, cozy up and lose yourself. You'll want that isolation. There was one scene in the book that was so scary and unnerving that I had to put the book down because I was getting freaked out in my hotel room. (The baby. SHIVER.) Kudos also to the lovely Kimberly McCreight for creating a truly flawed heroine, a girl whose anxiety has paralyzed her in every sort of the word. Her relationships are jagged edges, and her thought process isn't always sane. I was happy to read about a girl whose looks never really came into play in a YA book. That's rare, and it made this dysfunctional story of terror and discovery in the dark woods all the more enjoyable.

This is why I read YA!Great pacing, great dynamics, and edge of your seats plot drives this novel that you cannot put down. I asked myself several times, "What the hell is happening?" and not once did I guess correctly. The inside of Wylie's head is fascinating and weirdly comforting. I love this plucky heroine.

I have read all of Kimberly McCreight's books. I have enjoyed all of them. I think this was the best so far. I felt like I was on the edge of my seat and my heart was racing throughout the whole book. Whenever I picked this book up I didn't want to put it down. There were many twists and turns. The ending left me hang and I'm so excited for the next book to be released.

Really enjoyed The Outliers. Its one of those fast, addictive reads that you just go along for the ride with, yes it has its issues (the main protagonist suddenly finding a way to get over her agrophobia being the main one so if you can gloss over that a bit you are good to go) but if you are looking for a pretty good story with some pretty good characters that will kill an afternoon you'll love this. Perfect comfort reading.I read it fast - one of those that gripped me - starting off as a sort of a road trip to the rescue and ending up somewhere else entirely it was an imaginative story with a classically cliff hanger ending to make you want more. I will definitely keep reading this series to see what happens next. This was very much a part one. Kimberly McCreight takes her time setting things up, allows you to get to know the two main characters as they travel the highways in search of their missing friend who appears to be in danger. The whole of the book has a speculative feel, both thriller and a touch of scifi/fantasy - all in all it was a good deal of fun.

Wylie receives a text from Cassie begging her to come get her - she is in danger. Wylie, still trying to overcome the emotional roller coaster she has been riding since the death of her Mother - has to overcome her fears of leaving the safety of her home. Wylie feels that Cassie is on a dangerous slope and she must save Cassie from herself. Weighed by her anxiety, Wylie leaves to find Cassie with the help of Jasper, Cassie's boyfriend. As Wylie and Jasper get farther north, the plot thickens sending them into their worst nightmare. An amazing, enthralling read! Kimberly does not disappoint the last page leaves you breathless - and hungry craving for another page! Can't wait to read book two: The Scattering! 5 stars!

I received a copy of The Outliers from HarperCollins New Zealand in exchange for an honest review. This book was not what I was expecting at all. I hate going into books with expectations because when I do the books hardly ever lives up to them but this didn’t do that. I think it was because I went into The Outliers expecting one thing and got something completely different, but in a good way. I can’t explain what I thought this would be about without sounding like a complete idiot so I’m not even going to try.I figured out pretty early in the book that there was something more going on with Wylie other than what she was already going through. But figuring out that early in the book didn’t ruin the actual reveal because there was still so much going on and there were other things I didn’t see coming which I thought were great twists to the story.I liked Wylie and really felt for her while I was reading the book. She hadn’t had a great time recently but Cassie going missing and asking her for help pushed her out of her comfort zone and in the end made her a stronger person. Wylie had to team up with Cassie’s boyfriend, who she doesn’t like and has judged him on rumors around school. But as she gets to know him she realises she may have judged him too easily and Cassie may have been right about him. It’s annoying me that I can’t think of his name..I really enjoyed this book and I liked the idea of the Outliers with all the good and bad that could come from being one. Like the crazy/murderous group and the government that apparently wants to use them… Or do they? I’m not even sure what was a lie and what was real anymore because that ending! I was so frustrated with the ending, not that it was bad but because I wanted the next book right now. I cannot wait until the next book comes out.

I am a huge, huge fan of Kimberly McCreight's and have been since I read Reconstructing Amelia. So when I found out that she was writing a YA novel, I was beyond excited. (There are actually no words for how excited I was; it'd basically be a line of bolded, italicized, underlined exclamation points in probably size 100 font.)And when I got the chance to read it, it was everything I wanted. It's really fast-paced but there's also a lot of depth there. It's a grieving book, at its core, as Wylie is missing the loss of both her mom and her best friend. And once she goes on the run to try and find/save Cassie, things get even crazier. Threre's so much going on and no one seems particularly trustworthy. The only downside to this book is that it's the first book in a series and you will want the next installment immediately. I hope it's out soon.Highly recommended.

OMG WHY?If there could be one word for the perfect cliffhanger ending, then it would be the one that McCreight used to end this book. As I have not read many YA thrillers and mysteries before, I was quite enthusiastic about this one. It had me at equal parts nervous, anxious, and suspicious. Although the mid section dragged a bit for me, the last chapters brought back the excitement. There is still so many unanswered questions and plot points left untouched. I can't wait to get my hands on the next book!

OMG! Okay. Well I'm going to have to take a short break before writing a review for this one. I finished in one really long binge read and woah. When I got to the end of the book, my first thought was "this better be a series!" and it is!!!!!!

A copy of this novel was provided by Harper Collins Australia for review. From the first line of The Outliers, I knew that I was going to enjoy it. There was just that feeling you get sometimes when you open a book and you know that you and the story are just going to mesh really well. And I wasn’t wrong. Come the end of The Outliers, I was pretty in love with it, and I cannot WAIT for the second book in the series, especially with the pain of that cliffhanger ending. The Outliers had a kind of teen thriller movie feel to it. The main character, Wylie, receives cryptic texts from her best friend (who has been missing for the entire day) to come and get her, and to not tell anyone. Now, I know people might be all: this is super ridiculous – why wouldn’t you phone the police? But if we’re talking teen thriller feels here, everything is kind of ridiculous, and the police are always incompetent and shitty, anyway. From then on, there is not a dull moment in The Outliers. It was one of those books that I just had to keep reading to find out exactly what had happened to Cassie (Wylie’s best friend), and what on earth was going on.There are a few red herrings thrown into The Outliers, and I really enjoyed that. When the first one came along, I was a bit let down, because I thought that there had been so much awesome lead up to a kind of average reveal. But when I found out that it wasn’t true, it was back to questions and creepiness and all things glorious that you find in mystery/thriller novels. One of the aspects that I really liked about this book was the fact that there was no romance in Wylie’s life. Which I think is 100% fitting to her current situation, which is pretty wrought with emotional stress and fear and mourning the loss of her mother. Now, I think it is quite obvious that there will be a romantic thing going on between Wylie and Jasper, and I am totally on board for this. Hate to love is one of my favourite tropes, as well as people bonding over horrible experiences (not a sadist, I promise). So I really look forward to what I hope will be the gradual exploration and formation of a romance between these two.Even though the events of The Outliers made it so addictive, so did the writing. It was simple and yet evocative, and I adored the fact that it was written in first person, present tense (my fave). I think that is the best way to write a mystery/thriller, because it means that everything is happening in the moment, and no one knows what the outcome will be – you or the main character. There isn’t much more I can say about The Outliers except that I really and truly did enjoy it, and I cannot wait to read the second one and find out what happens!© 2016, Chiara @ Books for a Delicate Eternity .
