Rough Justice Audiobook Summary

The third electrifying book in #1 bestselling author Lisa Scottoline’s Rosato & Associates series has criminal lawyer Marta Richter in a race to prove one man’s innocence.

“Lisa Scottoline writes riveting thrillers that keep me up all night, with plots that twist and turn.”–Harlan Coben

Criminal lawyer Marta Richter is hours away from winning an acquittal for her client, millionaire businessman Elliot Steere. Elliot is on trial for the murder of a homeless man who had tried to carjack him. But as the jury begins deliberations, Marta discovers the chilling truth about her client’s innocence.

Taking justice into her own hands, she sets out to prove the truth, with the help of two young associates. In an excruciating game of beat-the-clock with both the jury and the worst blizzard to hit Philadelphia in decades, Marta will learn that the search for justice isn’t only rough–it can also be deadly.

LANGUAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is one of the worst of her books for language!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I do not get why authors think they need to use bad language to make a story work!!!! This is a great story of corruption and luckily it's being found out and punished. Lisa Scottoline - please back off on the language!!!

3.5 STARS"Criminal lawyer Marta Richter is about to win an acquital for her latest client, millionaire businessman Elliot Steere. Then Steere lets slip that he's sold Marta a false self-defence claim and that he murdered the homeless man who tried to carjack him. A furious Marta resolves to discover the evidence that will convict Steere -- before the jury returns with its verdict. In a race against time and the worst blizzard Philadelphia has seen in years, Marta drafts help from two able associates, Mary DiNunzio and Judy Carrier, from a local firm, Rosata & Associates. When Benedetta 'Bennie' Rosato, managing partner of Rosato & Associates, realizes Marta is determined to convict her own client and ruin the law firm in the process, Bennie acts to thwart Marta's plans and bring Steere to justice her own way. But Elliot Steere won't let anyone stand between him and freedom. Even from his jail cell, he has the cunning and connections to kill again..." (From Amazon)Another great legal suspense thriller.

Drags in the beginning, but picks up and left me exhausted by the time I was finished. And that's a good thing!

After delivering her closing argument, the last thing that Marta Richter wants to know is that everything her client, Elliot Steere, told her was a lie. It was not a carjacking that caused Heb Darton’s death, but a well-orchestrated murder to cover up the information that Heb had that would bring Steere and his mini empire down. With the jury out, Marta must find additional evidence of Steere’s guilt and get him back behind bars before the jury can deliver their acquittal and there is another death. Characters are thrown around as often as the bullets are flying, but Scottoline keeps the action tight and the characters in just enough peril to keep the reader’s attention. The attorney’s from Rosato & Associates are in the mix, yet in my opinion, are not central to the book. I know that sounds odd considering that this is the third book in the series, yet, Marta, Steere, Bobby Bogosian, Steere’s girlfriend, the jurors, and the kids on the street that knew Darnton all come to mind before I even think to remember Bennie, or Mary DiNunzio or Judy Carrier.I wish that people would stop comparing Scottoline to other attorney authors like Turow and Grisham. For me, there is no comparison. Scottoline is her own person, an author that has found the right balance between characters, the law, and most importantly -- humor.

Lots of action in this well-written legal thriller. I have particularly enjoyed reading a novel where most of the lead characters are women. Normally, I avoid women writers because so many of them focus primarily on romance, and tend to be a bit formulaic. Not so in Scottoline's work. Her women are embroiled in serious life and death matters both of the flesh and the soul, and their plights are unique. Some reviewers have complained that Scottoline's protagonists are almost superhumanly competent, and they are, but so are many male protagonists and we willingly suspend disbelief. At least I do. I like reading about people who are bigger and better than I can imagine being, and having that bar to reach. Why is it less believable when these fictional characters happen to be women?

It is really interesting to read a book placed in a world that seems so contemporary, yet, at the same time, is so reflective of the 1990's. The more things change, the more they stay the same as the reader will see at the end of the book when current day suspicions and accusations are reflected. That part is a little disheartening. I enjoyed seeing the relationships between the characters develop as the plot unfurled. There were definitely enough added dimensions and discoveries to keep the story moving. I was a little surprised at the amount of foul language, but, I guess it is all part of who these people are and the society in which they function. I look forward to reading more books in the series.

This is one of Scottoline's earlier book. I have probably read it before but couldn't remember it at all. It is interesting to see how Scottoline's writing has improved over the years. But this is not to say that this book was not interesting and good. I especially enjoyed how the author did such a good job of letting the reader hang at the end of each chapter. Bennie Rosato, Mary DiNunzio, and Judy Carrier are all in this book in their new fledgling law office with Marta Richter, a prominent lawyer, using them as backup in defending a murderer, Elliott Steere. In this book Scottoline is the mistress of suspense.

As with most Lisa Scottoline books this was a very quick read and was quite exciting. The problem with this story was the believability. As exciting and fast moving as the book was and the way it did expose a few things that undoubtedly exist in society these days, all the events that were able to take place in such a short time were probably beyond the realms of possibility. If you take that into consideration and read the book as an entertaining mystery, you should enjoy the book. I rated it 4 but it is probably closer to 3.5. It won't stop me reading Scottoline books as she is one of my favorite mystery writers.

There are still a lot of things that I don't understand about this book and that boils down to the fact that I read the third book, first! I had a hard time understanding the characters. They seem to be confusing at first. I started to like the book when I was about halfway. It started picking up pace and it started getting so interesting, although at first the problem was immediately offered. This is only my second Lisa Scottoline and I am so intrigued with her style of writing. I am definitely looking forward to reading the first two books of Rough Justice.

I enjoy that each of these books are about one law firm but different lawyers and different cases but then all of the other lawyers come into the story. It's a little more enjoyable to me than just the same lawyer all the time. Really enjoying this series. This storyline had an interesting take from the beginning when we find out the client was guilty by his own admission and we try to get proof to put him in jail instead of saving him. And I enjoyed the two sides: the lawyers and being in the jury room.

It's the middle of the snowstorm of the century. The jury is deliberating in the trial, and all of them want to go home. The quickest way to do that would be to pronounce him “not guilty” and with only a few holdouts, they were good with that. Then the lawyer who had defended him received some facts which made her realize she’d made a mistake. Could she turn it around while the jury was deliberating?

Listening to a “vintage” Scottoline is like visiting with old friends. You remember their traits and personalities and are anxious to remember the good old days. Rough Justice had enough nostalgia about the early 90s to provide a chuckle or two and enough characters to beg the question, “ I wonder what happened to....?” An interesting story line about what an attorney would do if there is solid proof that the client is guilty as sin, and then some.
