This book was very funny in all of the superstitions that it played on. Many children can relate to this thought process as well. Step on a crack break your mother's back and a mirror breaking being bad luck have been superstitions forever. I am glad though that even though this novel surrounds luck it still explains that these superstitions are false to not play into the fears of young children. I thought it was also funny when the ambulance was in front of Amelia's home. This added suspense to the story which this part of the story would be a good teachable moment about the idea of suspense. Another thing that I enjoy about this book is that it is part of a series. This would allow children if they enjoyed this book to continue reading about Amelia as they continue to improve their reading.

I remember reading this book whilst in third grade. Wretched old skunkbag, Mrs. Hart, who terrorized many of us in her class, had us read the original book in which Amelia Bedelia was a housekeeper, the WORST housekeeper in the WORLD (but she made MARVELOUS lemon merinque pies. I'd rather have Cool Whip, thank you very much.)

Silly Amelia Bedelia is always finding herself in some sort of conundrum. This time around, Amelia is learning about the difference between bad luck and good luck and they discuss some common superstitions. Amelia thinks she's in for it after she breaks a mirror on Friday the 13th, then her teacher helps calm her down. She thought everything was fine, then she jumped on a crack and was convinced that she broke her mother's back! As it turns out, everyone was fine in the end. This story has a theme of family and being appreciative of what you have. I would recommend this to students that have a little bit of reading experience and are ready to move up from more basic picture books.
