Ask Again Later Audiobook Summary

Emily has a tendency to live with one foot out the door. For her, the best thing about a family crisis is the excuse to cut and run. When her mother dramatically announces they’ve found a lump, Emily gladly takes a rain check on life to be by her mother’s side, leaving behind her career, her boyfriend, and those pesky, unanswerable questions about who she is and what she’s doing with her life.

But Emily realizes that she hasn’t run fast or far enough. One evening, Emily opens the door, quite literally, to find her past staring her in the face. How do you forge a relationship with the father who left when you were five years old? As Emily attempts to find balance on the emotional seesaw of her life, she takes a no-risk job as a receptionist at her father’s law firm and slowly gets to know the man she once pretended was dead.

From the brainy, breezy writer who “writes like a professional comic” (The Onion) and is “hard to stop reading once you start” (USA Today) comes a laugh-out-loud tale that confirms you can recover from your parents, the bad habit of missed opportunities, and men who romance you with meat. When opportunity knocks, it’s time to stop running and start living.

I had a hard time putting this book down. I really enjoyed the shorter chapters, and found the titles of the chapters a fun addition that you don't find in many books. I felt like I got to know all of the characters along the way and the way it was written made me want to know more. However I'm so very disappointed in the ending. I literally flipped the page over to see if maybe I missed something. Yes, there was finality for each character, but there was really no closure. All of the things that the main character experienced throughout the whole book kept me engrossed....but how did the outcome make her feel? In the middle of the book, I even researched online some of the other books this author had written because I adored her writing style. But I am just so disappointed in the ending. It was so abrupt. It left me wanting more. A follow up of some sort. I can think of a million ways to have actually had this book end....and with closure. Unless this author planned on making a sequel, I feel she made a horrible mistake in the ending.

I like the way Jill Davis writes. I very much enjoyed her book "Girls' Poker Night" and even wrote down a few quotes that I found particularly poignant.I was pleased to see the writing that impressed me once before still held up in "Ask Again Later." Protagonist Emily lives her life with one foot perpetually out the door. She doesn't know how to deal with her boyfriend Sam when he confesses his love for her. So when her mother calls and dramatically announces she's dying of cancer, Emily takes the opportunity to quit her job at a law office (simultaneously ditching fellow lawyer Sam) and move in to her mother's place. She also strives to get to know the father whom she hasn't had a relationship with since she was a child.I loved the writing style: short scenes filled with equal parts humor and warmth with an underlying sadness. I thought perhaps it was a little overdone with the whole "I blame my parents for my inability to live life to the fullest," but it was still worth reading and worth following Emily on her journey to happiness.

Watching Yourself Go Through LifeOur thoughts, feelings, responses -- internal & external -- to the journey of our own messy lives explored and revealed in one funny, sassy, thoughtful, and warmly reassuring story.Emily is the girl you secretly were, or wanted to be, or you pushed aside, to become someone else. We've all done it. To read its truth is a great relief. You'll love it!

I liked how the book was broken up into short mini-chapters. I laughed out loud a few times, which is always nice. Perfect book for a vacation. Definitely not deep or complicated, but if you just want to enjoy some dark humor and light reading, this is perfect.

** spoiler alert ** I loved this book and found the complexity of the story was in the simplicity of the way in which it was written. A quick, easy read. Perfect for the beach, poolside, or on a flight.

Best lines:"A fellow can remember a lot of things you wouldn't think he'd remember. You take me. One day back in 1946, I was crossing over to Jersey on the ferry. And as we pulled out, there was another ferry pulling in. And on it was a girl waiting to get off. A white dress she had on," he says. "I saw her for only one second. She didn't see me at all. But I'll bet not a month hasn't gone by since that I haven't thought of that girl," Sam said. "How on earth could you remember that?" I said. "How do you ever forget it?" Sam said. The surprise is that you continue to be surprised. As for right now, I'm lost. A map, any map, would be greatly appreciated. I'm not the first lost person to feel this way. Lost people just want a way out; they'll follow any foolish trail. How often do you get a second chance? Every day. How often do you take the second chance? Almost never. But nothing is ever what it seems to be, because you can never see the back while you're looking at the front, or the top while you're looking at the bottom. One side, that's mostly what you get. Especially if you're living with one of the sides, doing the job of two people. The conversations that I'm the most afraid to have are the ones I most need to have. They almost always come as a relief. I've danced around these questions my entire life, avoiding relief.

Emily is young, illustrious, and has a good life. She enjoys a successful career as a lawyer and is involved with a nice man. All this is about to change. Emily receives a phone call from her mother, who claims she is dying of cancer. As a result, Emily quits her job, dumps her boyfriend, and rushes home to her mother’s side. Soon, Emily discovers that her mother isn’t as sick as she claims, and Emily questions her rash decision to put her life on hold. She also discovers more about her father, with whom she has an awkward relationship, due to the fact that he left when she was five. Emily takes a job as a secretary at her father’s law firm, which enables her to learn more about him. What will become of Emily’s mother? Can she sort out her life while trying to deal with the past? This fascinating novel has the answers.

To tell you the truth, I found this book while wandering through a Barnes & Nobles and it quickly became one of my favorites. Any woman of any age could relate to this book and it's main character. The sarcasm in her thoughts are some of the same that women have on a daily basis. It's humor is very hard to come by, I've searched, and always came up empty-handed. Jill Davis does a excellent job of making the reader quickly change emotions. The symbolism, while a bit obvious, makes the book. It's playfulness is exhilerating and it's charm-unable to be ignored. If you strongly dislike "chick-flicky books" this book could surprise you. Don't judge a book by it's cover. It's deeper than it looks.

this was a total bargain book i found. never heard of the book, never heard of the author. my thinking was "if it sucks, oh well, it was only $2.99"i loved this book!! maybe, for me and some of my current personal struggles, i could really identify with this story and with Emily the main character. i typically dont like endings that are not concrete (they lived happily ever after; and they all died; and the bad guy was put away...) BUT i did love this one. it left it with hope for Em and her futrue, but always with the "everyday" trails we all go thru. after all, none of us really get the perfect fairly tale ending now do we?

The author used to write one liners for David Letterman. I laughed and cried while reading this book. It was hard to put down. I read it in five days off and on. It's about a girl who's not married and works for a law firm. She talks about her therapist, her relationship with her dad and mom. Her parents got divorced when she was younger. She ends up having a pretty good relationship with her father. In the book her mom finds out her has cancer. Her mom is a drama queen. I think in the end Emily (the main character) finds herself.

Maybe it's because I read this in one late night sitting but I enjoyed this book. Sort of chick-lit, first person confessional style, it follows one woman's attempt to come to terms with her life. When her mother's diagnosed with breast cancer, she takes a look at her life and makes some changes. She's been running away from life before it can abandon her. She starts facing up to her past and you're left with optimism for her future. It's fast-paced and funny. Nothing earth shattering, but if you're in the mood, it's worth the read.

This book was just what I needed. It's light and refreshing and very entertaining. I just had a lot of fun reading this book, and I haven't had fun like this for a while. It's not thought provoking, just a nice breezy read. Disclaimer: I would have prefferred to rate this 3.5 stars, but due to the absence of that option I chose 4 stars because I defintly liked it more than a 3 star rating. However, at 4 stars, its probably over rated.
