Double Sin and Other Stories Audiobook Summary

Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot both make appearances in Agatha Christie’s Double Sin and Other Stories, a sterling collection of short mystery fiction that offers double the suspense, surprise, and fun.

In one of London’s most elegant shops, a decorative doll dressed in green velvet adopts some rather human, and rather sinister, traits.

A country gentleman is questioned about a murder yet to be committed.

While summoning spirits, a medium is drawn closer to the world of the dead than she ever dared imagine possible.

In a small country church, a dying man’s last word becomes both an elegy and a clue to a crime.

These chilling stories, and more, cleverly wrought by master Agatha Christie and solved by the inimitable Hercule Poirot and Miss Jane Marple.

A good collection of Christie's shorts! Each story is linked to a longer review of the individual shorty, on the off chance you are interested in one particular story in the collection.Double SinA novice antique dealer catches Hasting's attention while on holiday with Poirot. The lovely young Mary Durrant works for her aunt who has a very successful antique shop in Ebermouth. On this trip she is acting as a courier, delivering an expensive set of miniatures to a wealthy client. What could possibly go wrong? This is some of Christie's early writing (1929), and I don't think it's her personal best. But for fans of the Belgian detective, it is a must-read. Wasps' NestIs it a murder mystery if you prevent the murder?Close enough, I say. The Dressmaker's DollThis is maybe the creepiest story Agatha Christie ever wrote.Of course any story written about a haunted doll is going to scare the shit out of me. That's my thing. Dolls. Ugh. Brrr! But seriously, this is one of my all-time favorite shorts, especially if you're looking for a Spooktober read. Greenshaw's Folly Raymond West, Miss Marple's lovable nephew, brings home a mystery to his Aunt Jane. While trying to entertain a friend from the city with the local sight of an oddly built local house, he stumbles into a family drama and a murder-to-be decades in the making. Double Sin and Other Stories, first published in 1961, contains eight short stories that were previously published elsewhere. With the exception of the silly “The Dressmaker’s Doll” and the predictable “The Last Séance,” all of the stories are enjoyable, particularly the final one, “Sanctuary.”And, yes, Hercule Poirot and Miss Jane Marple make some appearances. Lastly, I listened to an audiobook of this book, and all of the narrators — particularly Simon Vance, Joan Hickson, and David Suchet — did a fabulous job.

Really great classic Agatha Christie. I was surprised to discover a few stories were less mystery and more gothic/horror. Between Agatha Christie and Alfred Hitchcock, can you beat the English for knowing what's supremely creepy?

4 Stars. An enjoyable collection of eight short stories by Agatha Christie, half are Hercule Poirot, two are Miss Marple, and two are standalone supernaturals. Only one of them, "The Dressmaker's Doll" left me unsatisfied. Some might brand it as a love story, but I found it creepy. A doll takes over a busy dressmaking studio! The other standalone, "The Last Séance" asks each of us many questions and would be well worth a second read. There's also a degree of sadness that appears more often than in the stories with Poirot or Marple. The two Miss Marple stories, especially "Sanctuary," are first class - among the best of the twenty Miss M. short stories. As to Poirot, it's a varied group. "The Theft of the Royal Ruby" is a delightful Christmas story, a throw-back to another era of family celebration with a serious crime in the middle of it all. And the title story, "Double Sin," sees Hastings, and this time Poirot too, falling for a lovely young woman once again. She seems to be in over her head while learning the ropes of the antique business. That's it. Have fun. It would be a sin if you didn't delve deep into Double Sin. (March 2021)

An extremely enjoyable collection of short stories. Featuring Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple, the book also has two standalones (of which the Dressmaker's Doll was particularly enjoyable). Other than good old fashioned murders, the book also featured the paranormal. Quite well written, and had more jokes than usually seen in an Agatha Christie collection.

Entertaining and fun, an Agatha Christie is always a treat during a month of reading. Poirot and Miss Marple had stories, plus some creepier tales.

2 February 2023With the exception of The Dressmaker's Doll, which seemed more Muriel Spark than Agatha Christie, I enjoyed this strong short story collection.31 January 2023Here is another of those wonderful, vintage Dell pocket books! And again, I am reading the physical book for that wonderful old book scent, but I am also listening to the audiobook to give these aging eyeballs a break. This 1961 collection of eight stories features some truly delightful little tidbits of Poirot (four times) at his most discerning, Miss Marple (twice) at her most imaginative and Christie (twice) when she develops her fascination with the occult. In ‘Double Sin’ Christie indulges her interest in the Devon coastal towns, her judgment on motorcars vs. charabancs vs. trains and, almost as an afterthought, a truly delightful mystery of deception. Murder was always Christie’s preferred crime, less frequently she used jewel robberies, even less frequently, kidnapping, but this story is the only case I can think of in which the crime was fraud.‘Wasps’ Nest’ presents a thoroughly surprising turn of events with Poirot preventing rather than solving a murder and employing his own skills of legerdemain. Affairs of the heart were never too far from the surface in even the most strongly crime-focused stories of Christie, but in this narrative the feelings of two men for one woman are dominant in the existing situation and its development.‘The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding’ is a thoroughgoing delight. The characterizations of the very proper government official Jesmond and the over-burdened but very well-meaning Lady Lacey are superbly done, and even the servants Peverell, Ross and Bates are attractively delineated. The manner in which Poirot turns the intended prank of the exuberant youngsters against them while at the same time foiling the plans of the thieves is a masterful example of Christie’s exquisite skill in plot construction.‘The Dressmaker’s Doll’ is relatively unique in Christie’s output: a story in which there is no crime at all, but rather a sincere effort to evoke otherworldly powers, in this case specifically focusing on a doll with rather extraordinary powers. The successively forgetful, querulous, uncertain, fearful, and finally possessive feelings it develops in those with whom it comes in contact are very well described. I am uncertain as to what moral or spiritual intention Christie had in this story’s creation, if indeed there was one, but I do know that she succeeded as well here as in any of her crime fiction is grasping her reader’s speculative attentions. ‘Greenshaw’s Folly’ is a prime example of what I regard as Christie going ‘over the top’: the time of the murder, the true identities of several characters, the use of narcotics, the employment of a friend in order to substantiate a scenario of the crime, even the use of a costume borrowed from a nearby theatrical company: however Marple managed to see through all these elaborate artifices to deduce the actual crime is beyond my comprehension. With my most sarcastic arching of eyebrows and leer of a grin, all I can say is ‘Yea, right....’‘The Double Clue’ has Poirot analyzing a stock group of Christie characters to determine the identity of the jewel thief: a South African millionaire, a Russian countess, a titled English Lady and an enterprising young man who acts as a go between to help broker deals among the rich and powerful. Despite the obvious enchanting qualities of Vera Rossakoff, whose hat was ‘rampant with slaughtered ospreys’, I do wish for once Christie wrote a story about a working-class wife who was murdered by her shoe salesman husband. ‘The Last Séance’ is, like ‘The Dressmaker’s Doll’, a story in which powers beyond the range of normal human comprehension come into play. The tragedy which ensues is quite a chilling one, as the forces of good and evil are starkly drawn and put into play with a ruthlessness Christie rarely made so baldly apparent.‘Sanctuary’ uses a much older jewel robbery as the set up for a recent murder and an opportunity for Miss Marple to show her skills at deducing the true nature of events. Most of the irresistible charm of the story comes from the character of Bunch Harmon, the vicar’s wife who realizes that the dying man claiming sanctuary on the steps requires the ingenuity of Marple. Very well done.Highly recommended.

This collection was fun, but at the same time it was confusing because I’d already read at least two of the stories, and possibly more like five or six of them. That’s a problem when there’s only eight stories inside there, but at least they’re good stories, which is why I remembered them in the first place. It’s because I’ve been collecting every Agatha Christie book that was ever published, and there’s some crossover between books that were published in the UK and in the USA. It confused me, though, because some of the stories also had different names, but then I checked this book against a few others that I own and I saw that even though the names were different, the opening paragraphs were the same.I still enjoyed reading it though, and I would recommend this to other Agatha Christie fans. It’s also cool because it includes stories about both Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple, which gives you a nice healthy little dose of both of them. All in all then, there’s a lot to like here and not much to dislike. Read it.
