La nina habia pasado toda la noche gimiendo. Era casi como una especie de ronquido gutural, salido de las entranas de un animal, en lugar del cuerpo enjuto, casi famelico, de una criatura de apenas diez anos.
Estaba acurrucada en una yacija conformada por sacos de paja desigualmente repartida. Sus padres, mas por desesperacion que por resentimiento o temor, la habian confinado en un cobertizo que usaban para resguardar de la lluvia los aperos de labranza y algunas pertenencias de escaso valor que con los anos habian ido heredando de diversos familiares.
El medico se aproximo con aprehension a la chiquilla, que parecia dormitar, aunque respiraba con sacudidas constantes, impropias de un ser humano.
– ?Cuantos dias lleva postrada en este estado?
– Una… una semana… – se atrevio a responder la madre, segura de recibir de inmediato una reprimenda por parte del medico.
El doctor lanzo un suspiro de resignacion y tomando la mano de la criatura trato de medirle el pulso. Sintio un escalofrio intenso al percatarse de que el corazon de la nina apenas latia… !poco mas de 20 pulsaciones por minuto! Era completamente imposible.
