How Y’all Doing? Audiobook Summary

New York Times and USA Today Bestseller

Audie Award Winner, Humor

Viral sensation and Emmy Award-winner Leslie Jordan regales fans with entertaining stories about the odd, funny, and unforgettable events in his life in this unmissable essay collection that echoes his droll, irreverent voice.

When actor Leslie Jordan learned he had “gone viral,” he had no idea what that meant or how much his life was about to change. On Instagram, his uproarious videos have entertained millions and have made him a global celebrity. Now, he brings his bon vivance to the page with this collection of intimate and sassy essays.

Bursting with color and life, dripping with his puckish Southern charm, How Y’all Doing? is Leslie doing what Leslie does best: telling stories that make us laugh and lift our spirits even in the darkest days. Whether he’s writing about his brush with a group of ruffians in a West Hollywood Starbucks, or an unexpected phone call from legendary Hollywood start Debbie Reynolds, Leslie infuses each story with his fresh and saucy humor and pure heart.

How Y’all Doing? is an authentic, warm, and joyful portrait of an American Sweetheart– a Southern Baptist celebutante, first-rate raconteur, and keen observer of the odd side of life whose quirky wit rivals the likes of Amy Sedaris, Jenny Lawson, David Rakoff, and Sarah Vowell.

Review update - 10/24/22My heart truly aches as I think about the loss of this genuine caring, funny and authentic human. I highly recommend Mr Jordan’s memoir— in his own voice you’ll quickly learn what humility and grace are. Rest in peace dear man. Leslie Jordan is one of those character actors who is always a happy surprise when he pops up — Designing Women and Will and Grace being two examples of his recurring roles. I know when I see him, I’m going to laugh and he will most likely steal a scene or two. What I never knew was his name or anything about him (remember IMBd was decades away). Then came Covid 19 and my husband’s social media problem (I say addiction, he says I exaggerate— no doubt the truth is somewhere in the middle, but I digress). He came upon Leslie’s daily Instagram videos and urged me to take a look. At first it annoyed me but after two or three, I was hooked. Jordan’s way of verbalizing what we were all feeling, especially during the early days of the pandemic, was so easy to relate to. As we both watched him— I was happily learning more and more about the actor who had always been good for a laugh. This book— which I listened to rather than read— was quite simply a great joy from start to finish. I laughed, teared up a few times, and than giggled a lot more. Despite “fame” or recognition, everyone has a story. I highly recommend Mr. Jordan’s story— his delivery is as sublime as his acting!!

HOW Y'ALL DOING?: Misadventures and Mischief from a Life Well Lived By LESLIE JORDAN Review and Tribute (Audiobook Narrated by Leslie Jordan - 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)In the midst of my shock and heartbreak over Leslie Jordan's passing, I was inspired to listen to his audiobook. In his true comedic form, he made me laugh and cry simultaneously. Because he narrates the audiobook personally, I chose it over reading the book. Hearing him tell his life story brought me deep comfort.During the pandemic Leslie Jordan became a lifeline for many, including myself, who did not know him personally. I gained a deeper understanding of his personality, humor, and love for others as a result of listening to the audio. I can't recommend it highly enough. Leslie's How Y'all Doing is full of wit and charm, lifting our spirits even in the darkest days. With his huge heart and his ability to laugh at every experience, he was well known for sharing them with others. It is evident that he was a warm and friendly person with a joyous disposition. Leslie learned to live a life of wisdom and authenticity as he grew older. This makes his stories even more precious as we pay tribute to one of America's most beloved personalities.#LeslieJordan #HowY'allDoing @HarperAudio #Audiobook #BestsellingBook #RIPLeslieJordan #BookReview #Tribute #Instagram

Leslie Jordan is one of the funniest people and this book is utterly and completely charming. I’ve loved him since his Will & Grace days and hearing him tell such incredible stories about his early life, career, addiction and recovery, etc. was powerful. I have developed a total obsession with audiobook memoirs narrated by the author and this one did not disappoint. Favorite quotes/stories:💫When he was young, Leslie decides to give his favorite doll a cute pixie cut and some Twiggy lashes. Needless to say, this did not go very well and the look ended up more “drug-crazed mental patient” than chic and sophisticated. The dolls post makeover look scared him so much, he threw her outside but then continued to check on her every day to make sure she was okay out in the yard. 💫That time Carrie Fisher put her mom Debbie Reynolds on the phone with Leslie. Debbie sympathized over bad publicity and offered to call Leslie’s mom to talk to her about not taking gossip or bad media articles personally. 💫“There is no shame in saying, I do not have this in me.”*Note -> All memoirs will be given a 5⭐️ by me. I cannot judge someone’s life and therefore my choice is between not rating the book or giving it a 5-star rating. I prefer to support their hard work by giving them that rating to help boost their book.

Leslie Jordan's memoir was full of funny stories as expected, a bit about his acting career with celebrity stories, but it was also full of unexpected life lessons. I listened to the audiobook so I could hear it read by the author.I really appreciated hearing about him coming out during a time it was even more taboo to do so, especially for him coming from a very conservative and evangelical background. His work with Project Nightlight, a volunteer organization that stays with those in hospice care while dying from AIDS, will endear him to me always. That is truly caring work. And how finding the gay community in West Hollywood made it possible for him to grow and find the work he loved.I also appreciated listening to a confident and caring gay man talk about his family who may not have always understood or accepted his sexual orientation, but who acted with love first, which made it possible for their relationships to stay strong. He shares some lovely insights about his childhood and having family who allowed him to play with dolls, learn to sew, dress up, and dance. Would that every gay child feel so free in their youth. Or heck, ANY child, let's get rid of gender stereotypes and let all our kids play and pretend as they like!Short, but sweet, like the author himself (though he does admit to his occasional pettiness - but hey, who doesn't have THAT?), How Y'all Doing? was a lighthearted, sometimes laugh-out-loud, listen that sounded just like a good friend sharing stories. What Leslie Jordan did for everyone's mental health in 2020 with his Instagram videos is only expanded and offers more heart than ever with his book. I know Leslie Jordan from the tv show Will & Grace. But that was the extent of me knowing about him so, hearing him share stories from his life was enjoyable to listen to. I found it interesting how Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds played a big part in helping Leslie's mom be okay with how Leslie represented their family name in public. Last year on IG I saw a funny video that Leslie did. Here is the video. *LOL* After seeing that short clip every so often I check out his page to see what entertaining tales he has to share. For readers looking to laugh Leslie's Instagram is the place to look. Audio book source: LibraryNarrator: Leslie JordanLength: 4H 14M

Quick and fun read! You could just hear him coming off the pages... definitely made me laugh out loud more than onceI wish there had been so much more about his career instead of the going on about growing up, his horse obsession, etc, but I'm still glad I read it.3.5 stars rounded up

I love listening to memoirs by audiobook. It's been a while since I have listened to a memoir, so I looked through The Libby app and came across Leslie Jordan's How Ya'll Doing?: Misadventures and Mischief From A Life Well Lived. I couldn't pass it up!I first fell in love with Leslie Jordan when he was on Will and Grace as Beverly Leslie, the frenemy of the infamous Karen Walker. His most famous words went from "well, well, well" to "weeelll shiiittt"! I enjoyed Leslie sharing stories about his southern upbringing and much more. I could listen to him tell stories all day! He's hilarious and has a heart of gold.If you haven't checked out his Instagram page @thelesliejordan that made him famous, you should! He's a hoot!

Emmy award winning actor, Leslie Jordan, known for his outlandish character Beverly Leslie on Will and Grace and his stints on Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story series has been constantly working, minding his own business for many, many years. But that all changed when during the pandemic he became bored and discovered Instagram. And with one single tweet, “Well, shit. How y’all doing.” he became an instant hit on the social media platform and now has millions and millions of followers. In his most recent book, How Y’All Doing, Jordan, in his perhaps long-winded, now where was I, funny tale teller way, writes essays about his life, family and acting career. From his love of ponies from a young age, the death of his father when he was very young and of his travels with some eccentric friends, he has mastered the art of storytelling. In one essay he writes about meeting Carrie Fisher at an AA meeting and after having a discussion with her about his drinking and how it has affected his mother, it unbeknownst to him, led to a call from Debbie Reynolds to his mother, who of course thought the call was a joke!He spends some of the book writing about the gossip and stories while he was working on the set of The Help with Emma Stone and Octavia Spencer. He also dishes the dirt on other acting gigs such as American Horror Story. But, as in all lives, he also draws on his darker side as a young gay man trying to find himself and becoming addicted to drugs and alcohol. He explains that after his father was killed in the war his mother struggled to keep the family which included his twin sisters as well as himself together. He writes with a sense of flair and sarcasm which he also exhibits while doing his Instagram posts. His stories might begin somewhere and veer, but they always come back to his main points and moral of the story. Although a short book, it is filled with sentimental, funny stories and gossip which are enjoyably interesting.
