Jacques et son maître (Jacub a jeho pan) = Jacques and His Master: An Homage to Diderot in Three Acts, Milan KunderaJacques and his Master is a play written in 1971 by Milan Kundera, which he subtitles "A Homage to Diderot in Three Acts". The play follows two men, Jacques and his master, as they go on a journey that remains unexplained for the whole play. They tell stories to each other to pass the time and along the way the scenes from their respective pasts are performed for the audience.

I loved it so much. So short, so funny, so interesting. I love Kundera!

First things first: do not read this play if you haven’t read Diderot’s book first. You won’t like it at all. You might not even fully understand it. Kundera’s play delightfully emphasizes the philosophical themes of the original novel and gives it a sweet ending too. One thing I disliked about the Persian translation of Diderot’s story, that all characters speak in the same way, is certainly not an issue here, at least in the English translation of Kundera’s play. All in all, I’d say this is a successful homage, but since as a stand-alone play it might not be enjoyable or even comprehensible, I can’t say that it’s a good play on its own.

As a person who loves Dostoyevsky very dearly, I found this book, well, interesting. I can understand the carnivalesque need of Milan Kundera to escape the claustrophobia that communism had imposed upon his life and this play is a manifestation of this need. The question that you are left with is a strong one indeed: If there is no God, will everything will, in fact, be permitted?
