Many Rivers to Cross Audiobook Summary

Peter Robinson, the acclaimed author of the bestselling series Stephen King calls “the best now on the market,” returns with a gripping, emotionally charged mystery in which the revered detective Alan Banks must find the truth about a murder with possible racial overtones–and save a friend from ruin.

In Eastvale, a young Middle Eastern boy is found dead, his body stuffed in a wheelbarrow on the East Side Estate. Detective Superintendent Banks and his team know they must tread carefully to solve this sensitive case. But tensions rise when they learn that the victim was stabbed somewhere else and dumped. Who is the boy, and where did he come from?

Then, in a decayed area of Eastvale scheduled for redevelopment, a heroin addict is found dead. Was this just another tragic overdose or something darker?

To prevent tensions from reaching a boiling point, Banks must find answers quickly. Yet just when he needs to be his sharpest, the seasoned detective finds himself distracted by a close friend’s increasingly precarious situation. He needs a break–and gets one when he finds a connection to a real estate developer that could be key to finding the truth.

With so many loose ends dangling, there is one thing Banks is sure of–solving the case may come at a terrible cost.

The latest absorbing police procedural mystery in the series of Detective Superintendent Alan Banks. This book can easily be read as a standalone. The author Peter Robinson has a wonderful writing style and I love the quirky musical references he adds into the storyline. DS Alan Banks is working class, brooding and has a charming demeanour.A young skinny Middle Eastern boy is found dead and discarded inside an elderly homeowners wheelie bin in the Eastvale housing estate. The boy isn’t recognised as belonging to the neighbourhood so it’s a mystery to who he is and where he’s come from. There are possible racial overtones in the case. A middle-aged heroin addict is also found dead in a decaying neighbouring estate and Banks feels the cases may be connected.A strong and likeable character in this story is Zelda who is a friend of Banks and works part time for the government as a consultant super recogniser. Zelda is secretly trying to track down a sex trafficker that kidnapped her as a teenager in Europe. I found Zelda’s back-story really interesting and intense. Although there is a twist at the end, I wasn’t surprised at who the culprit/s was but nonetheless a satisfying conclusion. A well paced, and enjoyable read, I would of loved to have Zelda’s story go on longer, the ending was left open no doubt that will be in store for the next book that I’m now looking forward to!Thank you to Hachette Australia for an advanced copy the book

Unlike so many other reviewers, I found this book to be a satisfying police procedural that had added spice in addition to "normal" British crime. There is the added bonus of Albanian mafia figures far more ruthless than the ordinary criminal. Initially it kicks off with the death of a young man no one seems to know found in a trash bin. He is new to the country, alone and tasked as a drug runner. None of that is clear at first. There are many unsavory characters that make their stage entrances as well as another related intrigue involving acquaintance of Banks leading to a revenge murder that is not uncovered by Banks and his team. Perhaps more about Zelda will be revealed in a future book. There is, however, plenty of good police work in this book.Personal side- Banks is single with no current sidekick; his musician son's band touring in Australia is breaking up; his 30-something daughter is planning her wedding; his son sent him acoustic guitar for his birthday.Library Loan

I began this novel with some trepidation as I’d found its predecessor Careless Love to be a massive disappointment. However, I soon found myself hooked on this latest story featuring Superintendent Alan Banks. The dead body of a young boy of Middle Eastern appearance is found stuck in a wheely bin on a run-down housing estate. A short while later, another dead body is discovered; this time of an ageing heroin addict. Could these deaths be linked and are they both connected to a dodgy local property developer in league with Albanian gangsters? The investigation soon discovers the modern techniques employed by criminals involved in drug-smuggling and prostitution. At the same time, Zelda, girlfriend of Annie Cabbot’s father Ray is conducting her own investigation in London. In Careless Love, Zelda came across as a somewhat annoying cliché. However, in this novel, as we learn more about her personal history, she becomes a much more interesting and sympathetic character. In all, although not quite up there with the best of the series, this was still a massive improvement on its predecessor.

The body of a young Syrian refugee is found in a trash dumpster. He has been stabbed and a packet of cocaine in his pocket suggests links to the death of an aging heroin addict who had allowed his house to be use for drug buys as well as some very high up and dangerous people in the drug trade. At the same time that DCI Banks and his team are investigating the murder, Zelda, a superrecognizer now working for law enforcement, visits the site of a fire that killed her boss. She spots one of the men who had kidnapped her several years ago, raped her, and forced her into the sex trade until she managed to escape. Many Rivers to Cross: A DCI Banks Novel by author Peter Robinson is split between the two stories as the murders pile up for Banks and Zelda plots her revenge. Robinson is one of my favourite writers not least because of his references to music both in the title (love Many Rivers to Cross by Jimmy Cliff) and throughout the narrative. But his books are also well-written, well-plotted and compelling and Many Rivers is no exception. The book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger and I am looking forward to the next installment in the series. Definitely, a high recommendation from me. Thanks to Edelweiss+ and William Morrow for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review

A good entry in the DCI Banks series. Banks and team must investigate the death of a young Syrian whose body has been stuffed in a trash bin. Organized crime is suspected. Recommended to fans of the Banks books.

Peter Robinson has just released the 26th (!) entry - Many Rivers to Cross - in the Inspector Banks series. I've read them all and am always eager to pick up the latest. The body of a young boy is found stuffed into a refuse bin on the Eastvale Estate. No one steps forth to identify him but there may be drugs involved. And on another estate, the body of a life long drug user is also found - a seeming overdose. Banks and his team ,Gerry (I'm growing to quite like her) and Annie (I always appreciate her acerbic tongue), pick up both cases.Running parallel to this investigation is Zelda's narrative. We met Zelda in the last book Careless in Love. She's a super recognizer and is working with law enforcement to identify those in the sex trafficking trade. She herself is a survivor of that world. But when she sees pictures of men who were involved in her past, she hesitates to share that knowledge. What path will she take? Robinson does an admirable job of writing Zelda's story.Organized crime from Europe has spilled into England and on to Banks' patch. Politics, political viewpoints and machinations are also a large part of Many Rivers to Cross.Inspector Banks books are meant to be savored. The story moves along well, but at a thoughtful pace that allows the reader to ruminate along with Alan. I enjoy his honest self contemplation...."The 'black dog' of depression had been visiting more frequently and biting more viciously of late....At work he often felt like Sisyphus pushing that bloody rock up the hill only to have it roll back down again....He was also alone."And I've always enjoyed checking out the music he plays. I wonder if the title from this book was inspired by the song Many Rivers to Cross, written and recorded by Jimmy Cliff in 1969. Lyrics are here and they seem to speak to both Banks' state of mind and the direction the plot takes. That plot is believable, relevant and intricately woven. There's a satisfying ending to Many Rivers to Cross as Banks and team solve their case. Zelda however is another story - one I'm sure we'll see in the next book.Another excellent read for me from Robinson.

I received an ARC of this book to read through Edelweiss+ in exchange for a fair review. Many Rivers to Cross is the 26th DCI Banks novel written by Peter Robinson. It is the second book in a three-book arc with the first being Careless Love. I do recommend reading Careless Love first as this book mentions things that happened in the first and you will have a better understanding if you have read it. The story is told from 2 points of view that of Inspector Alan Banks and that of Zelda (Nelia Melnic) an artist friend of his who also works part-time for the National Crime Agency as a super-recognizer someone who can recall every face. Seemingly unrelated deaths, a young boy found in a garbage bin, Zelda’s supervisor at the NCA in a house fire, an elderly drug addict of an overdose begin to intertwine and with numerous suspects, the story’s twists and turns that could be torn from recent news stories will keep you engrossed. I enjoyed reading this book and look forward to reading the next one. Content warning for sex-trade trafficking and violent death. The best so far of the Detective Superintendent Banks series IMO. I should say the best of those that I have read. This has everything a complex police procedural should have and Peter Robinson is the master of this genre. Several story lines here some full of nail-biting tension. Particularly that involving Zelda, the girlfriend of Ray Cabbot (Annie's father) who has a dark side from her time forced into sexual slavery in Moldova. She now works for the NCA as a super-recogniser - she never forgets a face, particularly those who control sex-trafficking. She lives with Ray in Yorkshire and is decades younger than him. But they have a strong relationship.A young lad is found dead stuffed into a wheelie bin. Who. was he? His appearance is of Middle East origin but there is nothing to identify him. And then a less newsworthy death - a middle-aged addict found dead on another estate. Are the threads of each case connected? Banks and his team are faced with a mammoth task - how to uncover the truth. And meanwhile Zelda faces her demons with shocking consequences. Many Rivers To Cross is supercharged with menace and sinister Alnanians and is a cracking read.Highly recommended.

As usual, Simon Prebble's narration is sublime. The book probably deserves three stars, but the audiobook gets four stars from me.This book featured a huge subplot that had almost nothing to do with Banks and his crew and that ended on a giant cliffhanger. There was a little too much about what Banks was listening to when (there always is) but there actually seemed to be a little less about his musical tastes than in previous books.I wish Robinson would give Banks a love interest. He is turning into a melancholy middle-aged man. And that scene where he lusts after his ex-girlfriend's father's girlfriend? Ew.

Many Rivers To Cross carries on where Careless Love ended, picking up the story of Zelda and her boss Hawkins, and Bank’s nemesis Keane, and the Tadic brothers. At the same time Banks is investigating two deaths, and the local villains and not so local vicious villains who run county lines drug operations. Banks solves his mystery but Zelda opens up a can of worms and the book ends with almost certainly chickens coming home to roost in the next book in the series. She’s messing with some evil people, which she all too well knows given her sad history with them.

A young boy found in a dustbin, not long before another death, that of a drug addict happens, means Banks is drawn into the dark side of crime, such as human trafficking and county lines, but whilst the clues are there and the connections are being made, something is still missing. Can Banks solve the crimes? And also look out for his friend, Zelda, who also seems to be mysteriously drawn into the drama through her connections. Good to see Peter Robinson back on form after the poor last Banks novel, this is quite an explosive thriller with some bits quite a harrowing read. I got a bit fed up with the Brexit mentions, thankfully not many, it felt forced into the book and possibly promoting the author’s views.

Book number 26 in this iconic series. Inspector Banks is getting very lonely in his advancing age. In this entry Winsome is out on maternity leave. Luckily Annie and Gerry help carry the plot. I found this had bit too much of Zelda in this tale. Robinson's infatuation With Zelda somewhat takes away of the primary mystery in the plot. Still a solid four star read, "Rivers", needed a hint more of action to spice it up some. An outstanding series. Do not miss for any reason. Check it out.
